This the first and most obvious reason why ‘genderbending’ is inherently transphobic - it assumes that physical traits and gender are the same thing, and that you cannot be female without also being dfab. This is cissexism, and this is transphobic. The message that ‘genderbending’ says is that you must have breasts and a vagina to be female, and you must have a penis and a flat chest to be male. I should not have to explain why that message is transphobic.

As a closing statement, I want to make one thing very clear. ‘Genderbending’ does harm trans people. It perpetuates dangerous cissexist notions and the idea of a gender binary being a valid construct, erases nonbinary and intersex people, and others trans people. These are what we call microaggressions - they are not as dangerous as outright harassment and assault, but they enforce and support a system and ideology in which we are other, and we are worthy of hate and violence because we do not fit in.

tl;dr: Genderbending reminds people that there are only 2 biological genders. This indirectly supports violence and hate against transgenders. (???)

I fail to see how genderbending is "transphobic". It's literally just making a character the opposite gender, so theoretically if you're gender-bending an ftm trans person, they become an mtf trans person. They don't cease to be trans.

People go, "Waaah, muh gender stereotyping!", but a lot of genderbends don't change the character's color scheme and interests, just their gender. Adventure Time, for example, famously gender-bent their characters. But when they made Finn a girl, he still looked mostly the same, albiet with longer hair and a different hat. Also noteworthy is the fact that the princess stayed pink and feminine even after they genderbent her into a man.

Their last argument is "but trans headcanons are better!" They're not the same thing, though. Making a character trans involves integrating a transition into their back story and handling trans issues, which Tumblrinas are quick to tell cis artists not to do because it's "talking over" trans people. People do genderbends as a fun little character design challenge or for porn- it's not the best place for exploring an issue as complex and emotionally charged as transgenderism.

I really hate when people put visible self harm scars on characters, especially when the character is supposed to be ~~SUPER KEWL AND EDGY~~

Also @ the genderbending issue:

They seem to forget that genderbending means bending their gender - to literally ANY gender you want. Most people will bend it between cisgenders (cisman/ciswoman) because that's what they feel like designing the most, but literally nothing is stopping you from bending them from a cisman to a transwoman (and many do with.....varying results).

I mean sure, saying "opposite" gender MAY be "problematic," but I also think they just need to chill the fuck out and realize that they do genderbends every day.

The worst part about the design is the fact that design doesn't match the personality of character. Someone sensitive and depressed wouldn't caught died wearing that in the public eyes.


The genderbending topic. I found it strange when people who are not are trans, telling me what is transphobic or not. This type of agruement that could be easily debunked by have actual trans person saying "this is bullshit. Stop defend me, you guys give people good reason to be transphobic toward me and other trans"
