SJW Art and Extremes

Why does Tumblr have an obsession with vitiligo?

  • Suicide Girl model and America's Next Top Model contestant have it, spread on Tumblr, that's why.

I think people race bend Miku because for simple reason of she's the only one that is mainstream. Vocaloids in general aren't that mainstream even in geek culture but Miku is. People have seen her in memes, jokes and cosplays, visually people recognize her even if they don't know where she is from. She has a look that can be modified quite alot and still stay recognizable. Miku is quite iconic and famous but other vocaloids are very niche, therefore having a black vocaloid isn't good enough and actually any not-Miku vocaloid is meaningless. They want the famous one to turn to their side and since they know nothing about Miku beyond her looks they change those looks to their message.
Exactly. It's not enough to have "representation", it has to be the face of whatever is going on.

Longtime lurker, finally found something to add since we're on the topic of turning asian characters into POC because apparently they're already not POC enough. I'm hoping edits count enough to fit in this thread?
Either way, this one twitter user edits these official arts and completely blackwashes them, using the excuse of them being 'mixed' even though they look about as mixed as Validate's mixed characters.

At this point, I'm surprised they haven't done fat/trans edits.

It's obvious why they haven't done those: they would have to actually be able to draw stuff to make those edits. I have all the artistic talent of a cluster of colorblind hedgehogs in a bag, but even I could pull blackwashing like they're doing.

All they're doing is selecting the skin areas and changing the color. They're literally doing nothing beyond tweaking a color slider. No change to the facial structure, no change to the hair, nothing. All they have done is create pictures of Japanese people in blackface. I hope they're proud of themselves.

In my opinion these look fine. I was expecting something worse based on the description. I'm not saying they are good but they are definitely not on the same level as some of the My Hero Academia edits.

I now see the act of lazily editing characters skintones to be black and nothing else happens to be far better than the alternative. These just ended up looking absolutely terrible, and why did they edit Momo to be smiling? The noses don't fit the style the anime is going for at all, at least the edits I posted still look like something that could be out of the source material.

And thank you for the welcome!

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but I thought I'd go ahead and drop it anyways.

I've lurked on Kiwi Farms for a while (specifically this thread), but never actually posted anything, because most of the communities I've been in are plagued by creepy middle-aged men, not Tumblr/SJW artists. However, I'm here now because of a one-person rat infestation I found while browsing the internet.

This author of this webcomic right here. Now, before anyone says anything, no, it's not full SJW. The characters are pretty recognizable, they're not blackwashed or anything, none of them are really morbidly obese for no reason (unless they are in canon). My issue comes with the fact that literally all of them are gay or trans. There's no in between. I have never seen someone butcher the characters this bad.

Now, I would say I at least appreciate the level of effort-if the art wasn't just slightly altered art from the show itself or bad self-inserts. The main premise is that it's post-canon (which makes no sense whatsoever, because it barely sticks to canon) and that the characters are supposed to be facing the traumas coming with the fact that they were exploited on television as teens. It was a relatively quick read (maybe like 10-15 minutes max?), so I would honestly just suggest skimming through because I refuse to download an image from this absolute garbage fire.

The author has a DeviantArt (how I initially discovered this) under the name "heathersuoh", and go by the pronouns of they/them (which I don't really understand, it's not important to me and doesn't effect me, so no big deal, but I think it's stupid nonetheless).

Now, what I was wondering, is if the creators are allowed to file a lawsuit. Obviously, it would be stupid, it's labeled as a "fan web-comic", and a big company trying to shut down some little Tumblr artist would be retarded, but they're trying to monetize off of it.

If you check the directory, there's a link to their merch-line. So, remember earlier how I mentioned that the characters and art from the show are reused/traced? Yeah. Like I said, it's not even worth it to go through the trouble, especially if you're such a big company, but I found the whole thing lazy and overall kinda douchey.

Edit: Just found this gem on their DeviantArt. I'm not even logging in, I don't wanna see it-the title says everything for me already.

So I dug a little deeper-it’s 100% legal to sue and they could file a lawsuit at any moment.

It is only legal to sell fanart when the copyright for a franchise expires. For those who don’t know: the copyright expires when the creator(s) dies + another 70 additional years. In Total Drama’s case, the creators, Tom McGillis (president of Fresh TV, the company behind shows like Stoked, TD, and 6teen) and Jennifer Pertsch (also another founding member of Fresh TV), are far from dead.

The “cishets” at Fresh TV can also sue your ass.

While not technically legal most companies don't care about selling fanart or other fan products as long as it's not in direct competition with the official merchandise or huge production with significant amount of money involved. Don't get me wrong if you sell something based on IP that isn't yours it can get you in trouble but it's unlikely. Simply put it, to most companies it's waisted money to go after little guys and that legal battle can greate really bad PR witch can result fans no longer promoting your stuff. Still copy right law does work in that way you do have actively protect your IP or it's no longer protected, but there are fair use exceptions and few other legal tricks that allow companies ignore and not waiste resources over fans having fun. Even when they do get involved these tend not go much further than strongly worded letter but I still wouldn't go out my way to annoy people who do have upper hand in legel sence. Just because most don't bother, it doesn't mean some won't.

I don't think this gem has been shown in the thread before. EDIT: I was wrong

At first glance I thought this was a Poe's Law type thing but fuck man, I think they're legit. Check the twitter linked for more of this terrible, terrible artwork.

Yeah, personally I wouldn't try and waste a company's time, it wastes time and money, I just mean it in like a theoretical sense that they could technically be fined.

Theoretically, but I've seen people selling fan art of copyrighted characters at conventions for years and never lawyers skulking the halls shutting them down.

Mm, yeah, and I'm sure you're straight in the mosque.

If there's a religion that doesn't take the gay very well, it's not Christianity, it's Islam.
