I can't help thinking of this episode of Married...with Children ("Honey, I Blew Up Myself") where Al was starting to feel jealous of all the men oggling his wife's sexy billboard so he gets Marcy's women's group to protest it for being sexist. What he said, reminds me a lot of what a lot of these modern SJWs think: "And show them that a woman's body is not to be appreciated, but to be feared, reviled and in the case of most of you, totally covered at all times."

Amazing how a show from about 20 years ago could predict this.

Ah, nothing quite like fixing something by making the anatomy even worse. The woman in the redraw must have the shortest torso in the world and an absolutely tiny head. Her right leg is even more glaringly thin than it was in the original picture now, and her left leg just kind of disappears off into space. Also, the lineart in the redraw is atrocious. It's shaky, like it was drawn with a mouse. And the underwear and the... thing she's holding have no effort put into them whatsoever so they just look uncomfortable and out of place. Also, nice background. The first picture's no winner, but it's hardly an "improvement" to draw something that's even worse.

If they were a reader at all, I might point them towards the writing of Charles R. Saunders, the author of African fantasies like Imaro, Dossuouye, and Abengoni. He's one of my favorite writers in the whole genre, in large part because he draws on real African cultures to create the backdrop for his sword & sorcery epics. For that matter, the entire "Sword & Soul" subgenre which has basically the same theme might be of interest to them.

As for how Tolkien's stories would turn out if they were transplanted to the "non-European" regions of Middle Earth---such as Harad and wherever the "Easterlings" came from---that might be interesting from an artistic standpoint, but I suspect certain changes would have a ripple effect beyond the cosmetic race changes. Since Tolkien would have drawn so much from various European and Judeo-Christian mythical traditions, most of those stories' tropes would seem out of place outside a European context (except maybe the very basic ones like getting rid of a dangerous artifact, which could take place anywhere if worded vaguely enough). I imagine a Zulu epic comparable to LotR would still have tropes drawn from Zulu culture rather than the European bases Tolkien used.

That's what bothers me about blogs like Escher Girls; they claim they want to change how women are portrayed, but they lack quality control in submissions and seem to want more mediorce at best tumblr art uwu

Why do these redraws end up worse and lack any personality?

don't they say that the art represents that artist or something?

I agree. Also, call me a lunatic, but I'd rather see art that may be "problematic", "fanservicey", or even downright "pornographic" as long as it's drawn WELL.

The reason is simple: As offensive as it may be to some, even myself in some cases, it's clear the artist had enough respect for their craft to give 150% towards making the art look good given the subject material, and shows me that even if I don't like the subject material, they still have skill I can respect.

All these crappy redraws of inferior quality are just making me thankful they don;t have actual pull over the source media that they bastardize.

Yep, there usually has to be one female with the Kimiko template even if she normally doesn't look like Kimiko.

I can enjoy race and gender bends as a fun artistic experiment (Heck, I've done two of these.) But, yeah, the artist probably hasn't.

Sela looks totally dumpy in the revision with about as many mistakes as the original (especially the head and face). I can't stand how cookie cutter a lot of comic book pin-up girl covers look (same damn face and weird body) and some characters can pull off the fat/chubby look (Stormer from the Jem reboot looks cute, especially when she pouts), but maybe under a better artist this could be salvageable.

As for the second link. I know they don't want body-shaming, but the original character is an adult woman and that should be respected. Sure there are women with curve-less figures and boyish looks, but it feels like the artist went to the other extreme by making sure she had no hips or breasts.

EDIT:

Tyrannoninja: They'll just argue that it's racist you don't include POC in Euro-based fantasy. While there were some black, Arab and Asian people in those areas, they were rare.

Yeah, that's something that's always bothered me about blogs like EG and their ilk; they seem to have an aversion or sometimes hatred for a woman who has curves and shows some skin.

I swear they kept the anime eye proportions almost unchanged. Anime eye proportions are so much more realistic than a low waist:hip ratio, aren't they?

I wonder if there's a male equivalent to Escher Girls out there. Most of them will admit male superheroes often represent "power fantasies", so there's got to be plenty of male superheroes messed up anatomically in comic art too. I remember the oft-mocked Liefeld gave his male heroes an excess of muscles.

I doubt it because "muh mail powur fantashy" and if it did exist, it'd get reported and called MRA meninst propaganda or some shit.

So, basically, the ideal "woman" for an SJW is a dude with tits.
Goddess of Vidya Anita would cry.

Or show any hint that they have breasts. Out of all of them, I find Bikini Armor Battle Damage to be the bitchiest.

Anita associates personality traits and entire ways of thinking about the world with masculinity. "Dude with tits" is more about a woman being proud/showing loyalty/being aggressive. Come to think of it, I can think of very few games where the female character is given the "heavy" roles. It's always like spy/hacker/parkour user/martial arts expert. I'm guessing some of them would love it and some would hate it if a woman were the heavy gunner.
