Small features in games you miss - Reason #13532 why modern games are shit

Because it's the little details in games that show developers care and respect their craft.

I have two off the top of my head:

In Splinter Cell Chaos Theory (2005), guards can hear you when speaking to your co-op partner over the microphone. This required you to be quiet and talk softly, but could also be used to benefit by luring guards. This feature never made it any of the newer titles.

In Battlefield Vietnam (2004), they had a fully licensed soundtrack filled with Vietnam War era music that you could blast over the helicopter speakers (Apocalypse Now style) while you bombed the enemy team, who were forced to listen to your music as they died.

No save slots with % completion unless the game is specifically designed around unlocking shit, like TBOI.
I'm so fucking sick of COMPLETING the game only to see "Progress: 17%" because I found 3 out of 587 Fagshit MacGuffins, didn't defeat a single boss using only my dick while taking no damage, and refused to combine random garbage in my inventory to see if it produces the Elusive Shitfuck Thingamajig +5.

Unlockable content like new characters/levels/skins etc by playing through the game or beating certain challenges. Not having everything behind a paywall or a DLC you have to spend $10 on when in the past you could buy the base game and have everything included, just had to work for that extra content and it felt so rewarding when you were able to do it.

What I truly miss are the old games where you felt like you could go toe-to-toe with the enemies and bosses on an equal level and size in an open arena, I miss watching two slabs of meat fight where they would punch you into a wall or the other side of the city, and you would do the same, and the one who said "fuck it we ball!" harder was the one that won - I remember liking the way The incredible hulk for the ps2 did it.

This new era of twinks and slim muscular men fighting monsters in arenas is beyond gay to me, I miss when it was an extremely muscular man/monster vs another one.

Non campaign content, minigames, unlockables, skins, custom challenges etc. Stuff which is completely separate from the campaign with occasional overlap. They were the equivalent of the bonus features on disney/blueray discs and I miss them dearly. I hate this era of "post game content" where everything in game has to be tied to the campaign or the multiplayer. I still play the activision dreamworks games cause they had the best non campaign content in the business, the Bee Movie factory jobs, Madagascar Golf, Madagascar Jungle Chess, Over the Hedge RC Rally, Kung Fu Panda minigames etc.

Bots and local multiplayer should be in a game if there's an online multiplayer of some sort.

These old fucks are baffled that this PS4 Godzilla game doesn't have multiplayer when it's on the box, and I don't entirely blame them.
(Dear God this PS4 game is already 10 years old.)

Speaking of Battlefield in the OP, I miss mosques being in games (BF2)

the cod mw2 reboot actually had a small battlefield like mode and featured music in the helicopters and other vehicles but i dont remember if it was audible to the enemy team from a good distance

Server browsers. I play a little game called SCP:SL and it still has one instead of matchmaking. And it’s nice to just pick the kind of server I want to play and not hope i get the experience I want through some retarded matchmaker.

Servers also usually have their own community, you start recognising people after a while and they recognise you, it’s fun.

But you can’t Skinner box as effectively without a perfect 50% win rate being maintained.

Thought of another; typing/speaking vulgarities & slurs. You can't name your Bulbasaur FAGGOT or call someone a nigger in online multiplayer anymore.

That's a good one. I kinda understand not having bots, it should be an option but it's less important than having local multiplayer. It's insane not to have it. If the game ain't popular, shuts down, or just plays poorly online then you're essentially locked out of half the game.

Similarly, I think any game with local multiplayer should have online multiplayer too, as well as LAN.

I especially dislike when multiplayer games automatically censor you even when you're not playing online or playing on private servers with friends. I WILL call my friend a massive bipoccutetwinkr-slur NO MATTER WHAT

Remember when successive games in the genre used to have little nods and callouts to each other? SimCopter being able to load SimCity maps, importing the Sims 2 toons into SimCity 4? R&C giving a little bonus when you got a prior save game file in your memory card?

You don't get much of those these days.
