The flaky section of backyard chicken keepers can be pretty bad, since it crosses over with homeopathy and furbaby people a lot. Since there aren't many accessible farm vets, most people have to do everything themselves when a bird is sick or injured. These people think that everything can be solved by herbs, apple cider vinegar, and diatomaceous earth and that antibiotics, dewormers, and mite pesticides are evil. Occasionally they shit up threads about wing clipping and spur trimming, two things that if done properly do no harm to poultry and can prevent injury. They also get upset about culling birds for flock control, humanely dispatching sick or grievously injured birds, and slaughter for consumption.
Sometimes they have it partially right; you shouldn't overuse dewormers and antibiotics, but sometimes they are absolutely necessary and just because you "can't pronounce" something doesn't mean it's poison. There is a good reason your bird died of staph even though you used "healing drawing poultices".
They also harmfully pamper their birds, both with shitty diets and heating the chicken coop like they would do their own house. They think it's cruel not to put a heater there even in mild winters, and even though it's a high fire risk. It also does not allow to birds to naturally gradually acclimate themselves to cold weather, which can kill them if the heater goes out.
There is also a subsection of people who keep poultry in their house and make diapers for them to wear. These are the same people that do not practice good biosecurity and kiss and cuddle poultry, then act surprised when they get sick, making the media run fearmongering stories about how dangerous backyard chickens are.
