Two days ago, SMG4 made this video about Mario reacting to mobile game ads on your smartphone, and also announced he will be taking a break until January 21st, 2023

It’s been going for over a decade and has changed format so much that it’s a completely different channel from what it was 5-10 years ago. It started as a “12 year old plays Mario 64 in an emulator with GameShark codes and subtitles” series, then it got more ambitious and Machinima-like, then some Gmod was added, then more ambitious Gmod, then SFM, and so on. And while all this is happening, more and more original characters are added, more animators are being hired to work on full shows with original characters and settings, and SMG4’s style of humor gradually changes from “teenager who spends his free time watching Newgrounds and Machinima” to “small YouTube company trying to milk new memes before they go stale”.

Man, SM64 Bloopers were the shit when I was little. I stopped watching SMG4 consistently around the time Luke and Kevin started doing more IRL videos (younger me could sense imminent quality drop-offs, evidently), and I pretty much completely abandoned the channel when they added that one anime chick with a hammer as a character, not only because that's such a jarring, out-of-left-field creative decision for a channel like SMG4, but also because other, smaller channels were simply outdoing them in every regard.

There was a smaller YouTuber of surprisingly high quality named KupaGlitch65 who did SMG4's shtick of fast-paced meme-y videos infinitely better than Luke (though he has since seemingly DFE'd without so much as an archive of his video backlog - still genuinely upset about that), Matthewgu4's videos were not only more polished and better voice-acted, but genuinely well-written and hilarious (with a kind of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia vibe to them), and MJacobBarker just flat-out steamrolls the competition when it comes to sheer talent and dedication to "the craft".

All this being said though, 0% of Spaghetti was hands down SMG4's magnum opus. All the rendering errors, the un-leveled audio, the amateur Gmod footage and shoddy green-screening of the Mario characters, the awkward edgy teenager humor, the almost silent-film-esque propensity for relying on music and text rather than voices or sound-effects (with large stretches of the video just being completely silent), the lack of reliance on TEH EPIC MEMZ for comedy, the repeated use of "sphagetti", and the inconsistent capitalization, syntax, and cropping of the textboxes is just peak Kino Dogme 2007 2012, at least for me. If he still made videos like this, I think I would unironically still watch, lmfao - there's charm in watching static, over-the-top caricatures enact retarded, largely self-contained storylines, but that charm is lost for me and many others when it's told through the use of highly-merchandisable, advertiser-friendly OCs in these massive, multi-person productions rather than through the grainy, 360p creations of a kid having fun with an outdated (and likely pirated) version of Sony Vegas.

If I hadn't already lost interest in the channel so long ago, I'd be sad at the state of it today. I am happy for Luke to see how big his brand has gotten, but I can so understand where the SMG4 a-logs are coming from with this group of lolcows around him in GLITCH Productions. It looks like the making of a great rise and fall story, I must say.

There's just something about how childishly amateur it is that makes me so fond for the era, as someone who loved watching shitty GMoD animations that usually revolve around the creator moving ragdolls around with the Gravity Gun. Ditto with what you said, I'm proud that Luke has come so far, but he's not exempt from criticism surrounding how soulless his newer content has gotten in terms of the SMG4 branding. I'm not even sure if 'brand' is the right word to use, but you get the idea.

And Fishy Boopkins has been brutally slaughtered by Woke Productions for the second time. He actually looks anorexic now with these uncharacteristic 'gills'.

SMG3's useless beard looks even more tacked on. Meggy looks the same - don't know why they needed to change her but okay.

Is this where the production budget's going rather than the actual 'cinematic' work they're putting out in the form of Murder Drones?
