What is it about Smiling Friends in your opinion that makes it better than other adult shows? I can't quite put my finger on it but it's a lot funnier and more memorable than, say, Rick and Morty.
I believe it's success lies in it just being genuinely funny and honest, it helps that the show also knows it's target audience quite well.
Since you brought up Rick and Morty it gives me a great excuse to rant about it for a bit.

I watched Rick and Morty for about 3 seasons until I noticed the utter contempt the writers had for people who actually tried to get invested into the characters and plot.
You are actively punished for caring, for wanting to know backstory, for wanting actual emotional beats.

Prime example being the main Rick we follow and his backstory that was alluded to several times and Evil Morty and the Citadel of Ricks.
All plot threads were always undercut with jokes and this entire air of 'man you're dumb for caring about this shit' all the while huffing it's own irony scented farts.

There is just no sincerity because everything has to be aggressively ironic because to be sincere is to be vulnerable and not badass and smart like the show wants us to believe it is.

It also does not help that the characters, copies of it in most cases anyways, are cut down like butter in sometimes extremely gorey ways and that just further prevents me from getting attached.
At some point it comes off like a fetish the writers have, how much pain they can cause to the characters and how they can butcher them in more creative ways.

I am aware that after Roiland was fired these plot threads I pointed out were resolved but it is extremely clear to me there was never an actual intention to have it actually resolved.
There never was a thought out backstory to Rick or Evil Morty.

And all that i've written above is stuff that Smiling Friends just does not do.
It doesnt treat the audience as dumbasses for having different views, it doesn't punish the viewers for caring about the characters, the show is just having fun alongside the audience.

I don't know, i'm just angry about Rick and Morty because for a while I did care about it.

Edit: And I completely forgot about Jerry, a character the writers WANT you to hate, a character they constantly humiliate and make out to be pathetic and weak...they are forcing you to have a certain opinion of Jerry.
The writers want you to see Jerry and feel superior to him, to see him as unintelligent, pathetic and weak to the point they almost leave you no way to have a different opinion of him.

But he ended up being my favourite character because every other character is just an unlikable narcissistic dickhead that every small victory the writers allow Jerry to have are my favourite parts.

Rick and Morty forces while Smiling Friends just exists, with a raw, bad boy edge to it that Rick and Morty wish it had.

the raw bad boy edge in question:

The Simpsons thing is just a harmless shoutout, it isn't like how they called Family Guy plagiarism or how Family Guy makes 2000 insults about Bobs Burgers.

Honestly say what you will about Modern Simpsons, but it's pretty impressive that Smiling Friends got big enough to be referenced on it. So good on Zach and Michael

I think it's a funny shoutout. To the Gen X people that still watch new episodes of the Simpsons, that is what I would expect their first impression of Smiling Friends to be. The only thing weird is Bart being an iPad kid. I don't think Smiling Friends was that much of a hit with iPad kids outside whatever bits made it onto the short-form vertical scroll feeds.

I hope they put Skateboard Toaster Jr. in Season 3.

There's some pretty funny takes out there on the Simpsons reference.

The classic Seth McFarland approach. Alternatively, you could have a more subtle background gag of a Matt Groening-looking character getting his feet rubbed on the Lolita Express like he's rumored to have had during his nice flight with ol' Epstein.

it doesnt seem so much to me that Simpsons is being as outright bitchy like their (quite rightfully done) digs at Ren And Stimpy, more just "they don't really get it" because it's Simpsons
