I can't believe some of the outrage... in the final episode of the first season they say "Hell is actually real and Christianity was right all along"
Unless a joke is obvious and 1:1 there's no pleasing these freaks.

I guess im pretty old and out of the loop these days, but I havent seen anything even close to the media blitz of Rick and Morty from smiling friends. Rick and morty blew up fast and it blew up hard, and I encountered aspects of it in real life through merch at department stores and worn by random fans. By Season 3, R&M was a juggernaut, it was everywhere, and I'd argue it was the only other property close to the fame of minions or the Deadpool movie. I have yet to see anything related to Smiling Friends outside of the internet. Maybe someone younger can clue me in if I'm wrong.

There are plenty of sane artists on Korean art Xitter, I think @latebirdwakeup is generally okay as an example. But yeah Mossa is a really gross fuck whose only saved because the Korean government are a bunch of retards. He 100% owns CP, he literally drew fucking porn of Sylvia Likens (think American equivalent of Junko Furita, which Sewerslvt another cow is obsessed with). A normal person doesn't do it, but someone who owns CP definitely does I can just feel it in my bones. In any other country he'd be Kick'd (as in the streamer kind) into the dirt. I'm shocked he still makes art, I thought for a while he was bullied off the internet (I wish) but nah...

I'm more shocked no one else pointed it out that it's art by Mossa until I did.

Smiling Friends reminds me of what Adult Swim used to show after they would go through their FOX syndicated shows, and Robot Chicken. Very mid-2000’s, just woke up in the middle of the night kind of vibe.
I think that that’s part of why I enjoy it so much.

I think that it does as well as it does now even though it’s shown at an earlier time slot than 1am, because the internet and nostalgia has adjusted your average millennials and zoomer to that kind of humor.
I don’t think that it would have been as popular 17 years ago.

Gumball was the only Cartoon Network show at that time I didn't think was absolutely retarded.
It was on the TV a lot back then and while I never really paid a lot of attention to it, there were a few times I caught a line or a joke that seemed snuck in, some Rocko's Modern Life tier jokes for the adults that kids wouldn't (or shouldn't) get.

it also plays with animation styles a lot like SF, so neither would really look that out of place with the other compared to like, Regular Show

I love Smiling Friends. It breaks the mold of what adult shows are. It's not preachy, faux deep, or nihilistic like the other big names are.

It's refreshingly optimistic, funny. Yet still adult.

That being said it's very much an acquired taste. The fact it has gotten this far is a testament to how good it's been written. In lesser hands this show would have tanked.

It doesn't have the lore bait of Rick and Morty that keeps youtubers and redditors making content slop theories or Seth MacFarlane's shows brand of disposable cut away humor. Nor does it have to. Smiling Friends it's its own thing.

It's whole appeal is it's special brand of bizarre sense of humor. Absurd meets mundane. You just are into it or aren't.

If you like it it's amazing, but it's not for everyone. It definitely favors people that get internet culture. It's far more niche, but that's not a bad thing.

I haven't seen Gumball in a while, but it was one of the few shows that surprisingly got better as time went on. It does a really good job with the mixed-medium approach.
In other news, a Redditor on r/SmilingFriends is shocked that bigots are using stills from the show to target a certain group of people (you know who I'm talking about).

I thought this was a good example of how well this joke is. You can argue they could be talking about any group of people, but in the end it becomes a reflection of whatever horrible thing you can think of (personally I thought he was talking about tourists in general who join fandoms. I didn't even think about trannies or queers but it's not like that's not true either).
