If more seasons were announced, then I assume a contract was signed. So they somehow got AS to let them out of a contract and walk away. It could be part of the merger that made that happen.
I can see feeling burnt out after a few years and needing some time to recharge the creative juices. I am just glad we got what we got. They get to go out on top.

I doubt that either Zach or Michael know or remember who this insane tranny is.
For Jazzy Oliver, the day Zach Hadel/Michael Cusack/(most likely) Chris O'Neill graced his internet presence was the most important day of his life.
For them, it was tuesday.
This KatiKnitt (real name Tobias (Tobi) Knitt) tranny in particular is fucking hilarious. He's still seething over an incident from seven fucking years ago.
His claim of being transphobia'd against stems from an incident where he tried to pressure Tom Fulp into adding neogenders to Newgrounds:
Once he realized he couldn't trap Fulp into saying "No" and slapping him with the le transphobe label, he started bringing up racism for literally no reason.
Tom ignored him after this which led him to start accusing NG of harboring racism, transphobia, homophobia, and CP (which are definitely three things that belong in a sequence):
He tried playing victim, and then Chris IMMEDIATELY called him out:
Leading to a scuffle where the troon tried to act as if he wasn't trying to crybully Tom:
BTW, Tobias lives in Germany, one of the most troon-friendly countries on the planet, there's no doubt that this tweet from Chris really touched a raw nerve for him in his attempt to act the victim.
Then he tried suicidebaiting and sympathywhoring but Chris had absolutely none of it:
This verbal asskicking led to Tobi declaring jihad upon Chris O'Neill and Newgrounds as a whole, a grudge he STILL holds to this day.

Notice how literally NONE of this has to do with Zach or Michael? He has a grudge against Chris, a guy with like three guest star roles throughout all three seasons of the show.
Chris never sought this guy out after their initial argument by the way, it was always Tobias going out of his way to try and pick fights with him whenever he saw that Chris was getting too much positive attention.
Oneyplays' success basically rocketed the crew into another orbit, meanwhile Tobias is stuck begging for animation work and drawing Life is Strange lesbo fanfic porn, wishing he was a young teenage lesbian in love with a biological woman.

Kinda off topic but thematically it fits.
This Smiling Friends ending thing reminds me of Damien Leone saying that after Terrifier 4 he's ending it.
Now I understand the reasons behind it, but at the same time I WANT there to be never ending silly sequels.
The eighties and nineties had how many Elm Street and Friday the 13th sequels? Leprechaun? Hellraiser? Were they good? Not really. But they were FUN.
It's kinda defeatist and doompilled to say "we're done because we don't think we can do better"
That never stopped Family Guy, and I still tune into that despite absolutely understanding the nosedive that show took.

Let me just express my profound disappointment in much of you. I could hardly call all of this a discussion when no one is willing to recognize what matters the most. WHO matters the most.
Who we can no longer HANG out with and smoke weed while we fill our bellies with DIET soda.
Who we won't ever see again.
It's something that happens all too much, really. Events that leave many days to come feeling hollow, a loss in our hearts us, greater distance from our communities, events that fragment us further apart than ever before, little by little. Columbine, Sandy Hook, or the simple losses of valuable but all-too-often-invisible members of our community. But many fear the simple act of reflection, fear the possibility that they may realize a past inaction, fear to admit that they really to play 'Burnout Revenge' for the PS2 after it's too late. Hoping that the rifts in their daily emotions will mend themselves. Afraid to learn.
I recognize emotions are high now, perhaps the highest it has ever been, but I'm already weary with how so many of you can't turn your head and look back at the skinny blue running man who exists in the back of all of our minds. The friend, the maintainer, the landlords within all of our lives who are knocking at your door one moment, then skittering down the hallway murmuring gibberish the next - only for that to be the last time you see them.
What will you do after without the calming, projective gaze of red and green when they don't show up before work the next day?
What about the day after that?
When it becomes seven days, do you just expect that they'll show back up on their own?
At what point do you reflect, and know, that someone out there only wanted to see you happy with a belly full of DIET soda?
And then - they're gone.
A kind face you took for granted, fading from memory.
An ache which lurks in the emptiness that remains.
We need to do better. We need not to fail those who just want to HANG out in our lives. Those who suffer in silence while doing everything they can to not just lord, but to welcome all into the land that is the communities we live in.
Only then can we prevent these tragedies. Can we reflect and mourn without lingering. Will we close these rifts. Will we kick back and smoke weed. Will we truly learn.
I hope you all will learn that there is no need for paid actors and animatronics once you open your heart and accept that all of us have flaws. That even when we don't intend to, even if we had our own kind intentions, that we can still do harm. Not to bring shame upon you and to wallow, but to thrive and pay rent where it matters.
May you rest in peace. You are deeply loved and will be dearly missed.

I wonder if the merge with Netflix may have influenced their decision because we all know that Netflix, when not canceling shit out of spite, seems to actively write their shows in the worst wokest way possible.
AS/Warner seemed pretty hands off with them not having active woke elements, they didnt go out on their way to mock it but, as is, SF was pretty busy being actually funny instead of wasting time with the culture war.
Netflix however wont resist getting their grubby little hands all over it and demand changes under the threat of cancelation (like turning the boss queer because they had the occasional gay joke with him). They already made the statement that they're doing this with their shows and given SF's popularity, you bet that this motivates them extra hard to do just that.
Which won't matter cuz they're canceling the show even if it bends the knee lol
So Zach and Micheal can probably see the writing on the wall and that they might as well end it in their own terms as a subtle "fuck you" to Netflix. All disguised under the guise of "burnout", which might also be true but still...
Edit: Nmv, Paramount threw "fuck you" amounts of money and got Warner instead.
Oh man, Chris was not taking anything laying down and going straight for the jugular.
