They've already done this not too long ago. Ranma is a guy trying to get rid of his curse of turning into a woman. He doesn't try to escape gender distinctions. Any time androgyny, crossdressing, effeminate bishonen, gender bender (TSF) or otokonoko stuff is in a manga or anime it automatically means "tranny" to the looney troons.

I'm sure that they'll fuck up the subs or dub with current year shit. Only the recent Urusei Yatsura manga re-release had modern localization that made no sense:

I've really enjoyed the new UY adaptation, really captures the look and energy of the managa (loved the original series too, but it definitely became its own thing as the series went on). If they're doing a Ranma remake, I hope they make a similar effort. Agree with @skykiii that the original series started out quite good, but between the really severe budget cuts and original stories, it just felt like a lot of missed opportunities.

There was an interview with Takahashi once where someone asked her if Ranma could get pregnant. As I recall, she responded something like "I don't think about such things, and I don't think you should either." It gives me hope, ha ha. Ranma's mom has my vote for ultimate TERF.

What haven't been mentioned much at all is the studio was in the process of going tits up while it was doing Ranma. And completely shutdown a few years after finishing Ranma.

My reaction was more "I want to find who wrote that and beat them with a Clue Stick."

And now I wonder how I'm gonna read Urusei Yatsura if the only easily-available translation is gonna pull that kind of crap. I suppose I could just assume the original wording didn't include the "hetero-normative" part.

Canada may be a liberal shithole, but as far as I can tell, Ocean is still run by competent people who wouldn't fuck with the localization. Should Viz get the license because "Hurr durr, we had it first," they may or may not still use Ocean for the dubbing, and even then, they may have the final say.

So who knows.

Viz is an owned subsidiary of Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions (ShoPro) before the the one conglomerates merged together. Which is why Viz gets a lot of what it license because it is still in house. And why the localizations and censorship Viz does is had been overlooked.
Earliest confirmed censorship by a Viz editor that I know of, is Viz intentionally chopped up from R to PG-13ish rated and censored is Mai: the Psychic Girl because of the series name and main character. Even through the series was created and written by the creator of Crying: Freeman and Sanctuary. Both of which Viz was also publishing but uncensored at the same time.

It's not just the fear of appeasement to the West, the other worry is if it could be animated and done right by today's anime production. I'm not sure if they can recapture it, or if it might end up getting bland or animated poorly or end up like that new Berserk anime. By the way, anyone remember that SNES game Street Combat? That was a reskin and repainted version of the first Ranma SNES game due to localization license issues:
Maybe they should adapt this too into a series? Maybe Takahashi-sensei could make a manga of it.
