Indeed. The old ways were better. Home soda making allows complete control on ingredients and sugar content. His book has a short section on percolators the druggists used to extract oils from various raw ingredients. Might be something to check out.Neat-o! I'm kinda starting to experiment w/ indoor gardening for the sake of rare herbs, so it's always great to hear about people who propagate forgotten ingredients.
If you want to dabble with soda making without the super expensive equipment you can get this setup for ~$35 bucks (plus the cost of threaded CO2 carts) that allows you to carbonate a regular soda bottle. I use an old 20oz filled with water that I let chill for a few hours (cold water will hold way more CO2 than room temp.) Give it a blast of CO2, shake until the bottle gets a bit soft again as CO2 dissolves into the water, then give it another blast and shake. Quick seltzer water.
I've also successfully carbed lemonade with it.
