Neat-o! I'm kinda starting to experiment w/ indoor gardening for the sake of rare herbs, so it's always great to hear about people who propagate forgotten ingredients.
Indeed. The old ways were better. Home soda making allows complete control on ingredients and sugar content. His book has a short section on percolators the druggists used to extract oils from various raw ingredients. Might be something to check out.

If you want to dabble with soda making without the super expensive equipment you can get this setup for ~$35 bucks (plus the cost of threaded CO2 carts) that allows you to carbonate a regular soda bottle. I use an old 20oz filled with water that I let chill for a few hours (cold water will hold way more CO2 than room temp.) Give it a blast of CO2, shake until the bottle gets a bit soft again as CO2 dissolves into the water, then give it another blast and shake. Quick seltzer water.

I've also successfully carbed lemonade with it.

Thats a crush, not the brand name drink but a type of old fashion soda from the soda fountain days. I've been messing around with homemade CO2 non-alcoholic drinks and the bible for such things is a book called "Fix the Pumps" which covers the history of soda drinks as well as recipes.

You can find a pdf of the book here: https://oceanofpdf.com/authors/darcy-s-oneil/pdf-fix-the-pumps-download/

The guy who wrote it did his homework and he also sells a few old fashion ingredients that are hard to get these days. I'm planning on ordering some Acid Phosphate from him soon so I can make a proper old fashion Cherry Phosphate.

Phosphate's are another category of drinks (they came into and fell out of fashion like fads.) Cream soda's are another, but back then it meant adding cream to any flavor soda you'd normally order. Crushes are soda's that use smashed up fruit. Lactates use Lactate Acid.

Theres a surprisingly rich history to soda that predates the typical 1950's soda fountain era. Real fun stuff.
You sir are a legend! I wish I was a soda jerk of yesteryear.

Enjoy! It's pretty easy to get into making your own basic soda's. Tart cherry juice has enough natural sugar in it that you don't need to add simply syrup, although its super easy to make, so you can get away with just adding soda water to concentrate. Most stores sell tart cherry juice as a concentrate already. Easy peasy.

Tried Sprite Chill since I was really itching for some cherry limeade soda and that seems to be the closest and only option where I live, but there was barely any cherry flavor at all. Pretty disappointed.

Walmart has a new Sprite Chill variant, this one is mango-citrus flavored and comes in both regular and zero-sugar varieties.

There's a prebiotic Pepsi out right now. It's okay.

Apparently there's also a cherry vanilla one, but I didn't see it at the store.

I tried that new Dirty Mountain Dew and thought it was alright, which surprised me. I love Mountain Dew and love cream soda, but couldn't imagine that they would go well together. I probably wouldn't buy it again over regular Dew, but I was able to drink the whole 20oz bottle. I will also say that the "dirty soda" trend and how it's marketed is top shelf cringe.

Usually I stick with Pepsi Zero, but sometimes I buy something else, and so I got a different flavor of Sprite:

This is weird. Initially tastes like mint flavored chewing gum, but then the flavor disappears, and it's just a watered down Sprite.

Whenever I go to Universal Studios Hollywood I just can’t resist the Mario-themed sodas they have at the park despite them not having a zero-sugar option.

First up is the Super Star Lemon Squash. It’s a lemon-lime soda mixed with sweetened lemon concentrate, topped with star-shaped jellies, and has tropical popping pearls at the bottom.

It a nice drink that I always get when I have a meal at Toadstool Café, the popping pearls take some getting used to but they add a nice flavor profile to the drink.

The second group of sodas are the Super Mushroom, 1-Up Mushroom, Super Star, and Dire Flower Fizzes at USH’s Power Up Cafe. They’re basically Sprite with variety-dependent popping pearls at the bottom and a power up-shaped sugar cube that adds an additional flavor profile and edible glitter to the drink (The Super Mushroom adds strawberry, the 1-Up Mushroom adds lime, the Super Star adds mango-pineapple, and the Fire Flower adds mango-habanero). I’ve had all four fizzes (not at once, I have some standards here) and they’re decent, I’m a personal fan of the Super Star Fizz and the Fire Flower Fizz actually has some heat to it.

Oh, and to add on some tranny seething I occasionally have the cold butterbeer and butterbeer ice cream at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Mango-habenero sounds pretty interesting, especially as someone who likes a bit of spice with her sweetness.

Have any of y’all ever had Cheerwine? I don’t think you’ve lived until you have.
MY NIGGA.

I barely drink soda but that's the SHIT. I don't know how picky you are but cheer wine with tons of crushed ice is peak yum. Also every year in my Xmas stocking my mom gets me cheer wine chapstick. She refuses to tell me where it's from, I'm sure it's an easy google but it's been a fun family tradition.

When I lived in North Carolina there was a small burger chain called cookout (IYKYK) it's legit like if you were grilling out back flavor was insane cheap too but cheer wine burger fries was like 5 and change and really had that "dad made burgers" taste.
