What's wrong with paying for software?

There's nothing paid on Windows or Android that there isn't a better free alternative for.

Apple on the other hand... is such a walled garden that even the trash costs money.

Typically nobody pays for utilities or security on Windows. 99% of it is built in or provided by Microsoft. For power users, Powershell is your best friend. Can't remember the last time I had to touch anything in explorer that wasn't a copy/paste.

For Apple you typically need a full suite of different paid software just to try to get comfortable.

instead of the nickel and diming that DO does.
I get what you mean, but technically you only have to pay if you want updates after a year. And myself, since I first installed it, I never updated it until today. Talking about it here kind of reminded me that I should maybe do that before my updoot loicense expires near the end of the year.

EDIT: Just to clarify, I am not at all saying they aren't jewing you with their loicense model. I'm saying I'm fine with getting jewed, in this case.

I agree with the installing on more than one machine. Lame that you need to buy it multiple times for that. Fortunately, I only have one machine to use it on.

I'm not sure how intrusive their DRM is or anything. I blocked the executable at firewall level after I first installed it and I haven't had any issues.

Total Commander works great if you get used to it, but I couldn't get used to it myself.

How is it different from just using Notepad++ to search for text in files?

Edit: At a quick glance on the itchio page, other than perhaps the incremental mode, it seems to me that it offers about the same features.
  • Bookmarks: saved combinations of path/filter/text
  • Speed: easier to see the speedup on medium/large projects
  • Full History: every combination of path/filter/text searched
  • Context: show lines before/after matching line to show. I'm not sure if notepad++ has this or not.

You should try out ShareX.
Never recommend ShareX without a warning.
  • It comes with bloat such as tranny blob emojis that have no place being included with the software files.
  • It auto uploads all your screenshots to Imgur by default. Everyone I know who's used it wasn't aware of that. Set auto uploads off and make a firewall rule that stops ShareX communicating to the Internet.
  • The install version has restrictions on some settings which aren't apparent at first, but will keep reverting to the default when you close/open the program. I forget what they were precisely, but I remember the portable version never gave me any trouble. It might have had to do with what directory you're saving screenshots to.

Eartrumpet is a fantastic replacement for Windows 10's volume control. I've been using it for years. You can replace the original with it in autostart. I've never had any issues with it.

I did not realize you could replace the original and that was the only thing holding me back on using it. I'll give it a shot if that's the case!

Unless you mean cracked, would love to see what free alternative for the following software that are not complete shit or too barebone so it's essentially just a gimmick hobby shovelware.
  • DAW (Reaper, Ableton, FL Studio, Bitwig)
  • Photo editor (Lightroom, DxO, Capture One)
  • CAD (Catia, AutoCAD, Creo)
I could give a pass for darktable and RawTherapee if I'm feeling optimistic in the users skill as a photographer. I do like this users list for a very good attempt to provide the best "free" legal options out there.

For all the anons farmers who don't want to use Adobe Lightroom or DxO PhotoLab for photography, I got some "workable" free alternatives that do indeed work on Linux, works great for beginners but if you are "pro" you can ignore this post, ngl you are stuck with LR, DxO or Capture One.

RAW photo editors / "photo developer" software
Since these softwares lack some RAW file support for newer cameras or you might have very obscure camera files, you have to suck it up to at least one single Adobe software if you want a wide camera support for your computer:
If you got a bunch of reference photos or images you are "inspired" by and want to have them side by side (good for quick checking your stuff as a beginner to compare your images), I would recommend the following:
  • PureRef (not FOSS, but nice)
  • beeref, GitHub (FOSS, but I have not tested this one if it works)
But the audio and CAD department is still lacking a lot.

Make a .bat of this code:

Code:
@echo off

REG ADD "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer" /V HideSCAVolume /T REG_DWORD /D 1 /F

REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer" /V HideSCAVolume /T REG_DWORD /D 1 /F

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
start explorer.exe

Then add Eartrumpet to autostart by pasting a shortcut to AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

I guess, I mean this is professional software that it wouldn't be unheard of for an employer to pay for.

tldr Windows is ready out of the box for even power users. Professional tools, yeah, always gonna need to pay for.

Not the kind of thing that gets listed here from what I've seen.

My major point is that if you try to use a Linux distro, you're dependent on a lot of outdated and non-outdated third party software for basic utilities. You need a Google search to install most things. And most things are really shitty. Linux is just not good for anything other than servers.

On Mac, you're paying $20 for simple quality screenshot utilities, screen recorders, UI customizations (because Apple UIs are so fucking horrendous it's offensive to look at).

You don't need to constantly change everything for it to be good.

Isn't Reaper already essentially free, but acts like WinRAR by being begware upon start up? Unless certain plugins and features are blocked off like FL is if you don't have the right license for it.
Yes, Reaper is just nagware. No features are locked behind the license or a subscription. It's also incredibly inexpensive for a DAW, at only $60 for the large majority of users.

Hey guys, is there a way to get revanced to work with Google Assistant or am I stuck needing to get YouTube music premium to tell it to play a song?

...and doesn't take up 700GB on your HDD. I use v6.05 and it's only 150MB.
