For those who drive a lot and want to stop using an always internet connected navigation aid like Google Maps, the software called OSMand is actually quite good. The app can be downloaded from Fdroid and before use you have to download the vector map files for the region you're in. I'm using in US and for traversing the interstates, it's a suitable replacement. There are a lot of customization options for navigation such as avoiding toll roads or highways altogether. Limitation being you can only download 16 regions through the app but it's very easy to download the rest or whatever you need on desktop and transfer to your mobile device.

It does seem to struggle with publoc transit. But I agree it is FANTASTIC.

You can get OSMand+ for free from F-Droid which doesn't have any of the limitations. It also works for GPX tracks which turns your phone into a proper offline GPS (though not as nice as a dedicated GPS).

Speaking of F-Droid, their own app sucks ass for keeping apps up to date, it requires hitting update on every single application. I've been using Neo-Store for managing my FOSS applications. It has the major repos as one click adds (unlike F-Droid) and can queue up downloading and updating all your applications at once.

That's super. I've been dealing with the clunky Fdroid interface and it does suck. It's good there are better clients out there. I'll have to check it out.

Question about OSMand+
It seems to have zero data about local bus routes despite all maps downloaded. If someone knows of something people commonly forget please let me know.

The OP needs to be amended, Brave is definitely spyware. Launch ws or ettercap and you'll see it's constantly sending data and telemetry back. I encourage to block these endpoints immediately if you're a Brave user (If it breaks your rewards, I don't care):

static.brave.com
crlsets.brave.com
brave-core-ext.s3.brave.com
safebrowsing.brave.com (only disable if you have another filtering backup)
static1.brave.com
laptop-updates.brave.com <-- VERY INTRUSIVE, Constantly pings even when rewards off
variations.brave.com this is the second most pinged domain
grant.rewards.brave.com breaks rewards
api.rewards.brave.com breaks rewards
rewards.brave.com breaks rewards
p3a.brave.com this isn't pinged when you have disabled 'automatically product analytics' but do it anyway

The better solution is to migrate to a new browser, which I am doing.

Doesnt take a genius to instantly recognize brave as a honeypot

I disagree that it is spyware, but the fact it pings some domains is useful to know. Some of these look like they are pinged to help the Brave Shields work (checking for what to block on a webpage, new ad links that need to be blocked and so on) and some domains are needed for Rewards so obviously blocking them breaks it, that makes sense. Blocking it should be done if you are not using them, which since I am not I might do.

There's zero reason to ping the non-rewards domain and the safebrowsing endpoint unless for telemetry, I challenge anyone to find one. plus the request sizes equal that of other telemetry harvesting services. Either way, use what you will.

It's time to shill Voidtools Everything again.

Instant file search on windows and so much more, including easy mass renaming of files and so much more! Plus, it's free! It's the best.
I also recommend the EverythingPowertoys plugin so you can use Everything search from Powertoys Run.

Also, WingetUI is pretty handy for pulling together Winget, Chocolatey, and Scoop together, you can install a lot of software package-style from it.

I use Brave just for the Tor browser, (it was actually suggested to use it for that on this forum I believe) what would you suggest I use for Tor as a windows user?

Almost derped there.... Read voidtools and missed "Everything" was actually about to mention that Everything does all that too.... anyway...

I use it and it's honestly fantastic, the only slightly negative comment I have about it is when I first started using it on a windows 7 machine (I got new in 2012) and starting up the program it took about 10 minutes before the file lists would show. Now on a new machine it's instant.

You can use the official TOR browser instead of Brave.

With Everything I've had the reverse experience, I updated to the newest version a couple of months ago and oddly enough it is slower than the 2018 version.

As a windows user? Try to find the equivalent of the Tor service daemon on most linux, something that runs as a local proxy server for Tor (eg orbot on android).
I reccomend firefox with foxyproxy set to use the onion proxy for *.onion (socks5://127.0.0.1:9050)

I've been trying out The Bat! email client for Windows, and it's fantastic. One of the very few clients that supports OAUTH2 and IMAP IDLE (even Outlook doesn't seem to do the latter), and the interface is highly customizable. You can get rid of any feature or menu item you don't use. Built-in RSS reader, and has a calendar etc. for those who care about that sort of thing.
I'm letting it run through a shakedown cruise a little longer before buying it, but if nothing unexpected happens I'm absolutely going for it.
Yeah, it's not free and not open-source, but the alternatives are all either garbage, corporate software designed for CSRs who copy/paste answers to emails for a living, or too limited to be a "daily driver".

On a related note, is it just me or is Thunderbird on Windows horrible compared to whatever ESR build you get on Debian?
