Here are some suggestions for windows users, always use the free version if there is a pro variant.
Please excuse the double postings, I try to make this list comprehensive.
Most good linux distributions have some of the functionalities already onboard.
This is why you should use linux if you can.

1. Piriform Speccy for system information

2. Piriform CCleaner for deletion of unnecessary files and registry entries

3. Piriform Recuva and TestDisk for data recovery

4. OCCT for system stability checking (very nice for overclocking)

5. Windirstat for windows directory statistics, great tool to check why your disk space is low

6. Bulk Rename Utility (the name says it all)

7. Unlocker to delete all protected windows files

8. Eraser for secure data removal

9. MailStoreHome to backup and transfer your mails

10. Wireshark for monitoring network traffice

11. Calibre to organise your ebooks and transfer them to your reader

12. Greenshot for screenshots

13. ClassicShell for windows 8 and 10 users to get rid of this abomination of a start menu

14. IrfanView for viewing images

15. LAVFilters Megamix for viewing videos, the site is very anime spergy but the info is solid

16. Revo Uninstaller (the name says it all again)

17. Easy2Boot, USB multiboot solution to get all you images under one roof

18. JDownloader to download content from websites

19. The firefox users should use this add-ons:

a. uMatrix for java script control
b. ublock against the ads
c. privacy badger for blocking those pesky trackers

20. Ninite.com for downloading and installing software in bulk.
The selection is a good starting point for your other software needs.

21. Veracrypt and AxCrypt to encrypt your files and disks

22.
22. freefilesync 6.13 for incremental backups.
Beware, the newer versions come bundled with adware,
get the donation edition instead if you want to use them.

edit: fixed jdownloader link, thanks @OwO What's This?

mostly good suggestions but

12. there is literally no reason to use this over ShareX, a project which completely supersedes greenshot and is better in every conceivable way

14. irfanview is fucking ancient, it was made in dinosaur times and doesn't utilize your GPU's capabilities at all. use HoneyView

16. Bulk Crap Uninstaller is better

18. will you niggers please stop linking to the adware infested version of JDownloader? This is the proper link, and yes the nullreferer is important.

19. recommending people umatrix for blocking javascript is like recommending someone a Dremel for a jagged tooth. also Nano Defender is better, if you don't care for screwing over ad networks with AdNauseum. privacy badger is redundant, both ublock and nano defender have access to tracker blockers.

20. ninite is for dumb bitches and soft boys

22. Free File Sync is obsolete as hell. GoodSync is a good option if you want something free and easy. Syncthing is the best choice for pretty and smart people (like me)

It blocks all Ads in my experience, and if it cannot block an Ad then it will simply mute Spotify until the Ad is over. (Which has never happened to me)
It has never muted Spotify for me. I do however use the web player, so maybe that's why?

Google Files GO is available for more and more devices, so those sticking to shady clean and boost apps have pretty much no excuse to do so anymore. If you don't give a shit about what Google does with your data that is.

I have to dump Brave. I thought the browser didn't track shit. I enter a Discord and mention "nyquil" and a few minutes later I check Twitter on the browser. Then lo and behold a Nyquil ad from 2016 is front and center.

Back to Chrome.

Also, Brave does not interact well with Youtube.

Also, Brave does not interact well with Youtube.

YouTube breaks the video encoder through radical updates, especially if it skirts the rules of viewing or streaming content. Just saying Google will go to great lengths to break these apps including cease and desist to third party sources.

Such as: Background players, these need to be constantly updated if you want stable playback.

I'll throw one in

XMPlay
Pros
  • Lightweight as hell. In total, it's just under half a megabyte, and portable as well.
  • Customizable to hell and back. Tons of themes if you're a sped who's not a fan of the default theme.
  • Loads of support for different audio formats, even modular ones like .MOD or .XM if you're a weirdo who's into that.
  • So easy, even a downie can use it. You barely need to customize anything once you run it.
Cons
  • It's 20 years old, so don't be suprised if you run into any errors when using it. Still updated tho.

Soooo for those of you on Firefox Quantum lamenting the lack of a smooth automatic translation, fear not... 'ol owo has you covered - from head to toe.

Get these two extensions:
https://github.com/andreicristianpetcu/page-translator/releases
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/styl-us/

Add a new style in Stylus
Code:
.goog-te-banner-frame.skiptranslate {
    display: none !important;
}
body {
    top: 0px !important;
}
/* There might be a few websites where this body CSS might break something stapled to the top of the screen. You can either just toggle this style off for a moment, make this style only apply to certain domains (the ones you want translated), or you can precede 'body' with html.translated-ltr so it only applies that when the page is translated. The last method causes a momentary 'jitter' which I found annoying, which is why it's not the default. */

This makes it so when you set a domain to auto-translate it's not suddenly shifted down 40 pixels by an obnoxious translate bar at the top of the screen. You can toggle it on and off easily with Stylus.

This is great information. Fwiw, Avira antivirus has been treating me well ever since I dropped Avast over false positives from this site. It's fast, quiet, and doesn't source malware reports from whatever source was attacked to get at KF. They also offer an antivirus liveCD that can unfuck a surprising amount of virus-riddled machines.
I use Kaspersky Total Security. Have been using it for about a year and a half now, and I like it. You'll have to actually pay for it, though, and it ain't cheap, but it's not overly expensive either ($150/year, I think). Good news is that they often have sales and shit, though. It can also break certain programs, so you may have to tinker with a few settings.

So I tried out AdNauseum after a few here recommended it. It seemed fine on every website I visited, until a few minutes later I went to watch something on a TV-on-demand website and got ads at the start of the video. I switched back to uBlock Origin and the ads were gone. So I'm not sure if this was just an extremely rare case or something or if uBlock is simply better but... yeah. Also I don't care about the whole clicking ads shit so I think I'll just stick with uBlock.

MemTest86 to boot to and test for problems with your RAM.

MemeTest86 for the autistic version that is plastered with Pepe and MLG memespeak. Still effective though.

I used to use HDDGuardian for S.M.A.R.T testing but the developer ragequit because he got called a fag too many times and can't handle the internet. (You can read about it in that link but it's not available for download there.) It's still available here but I'm glad some of you posted other programs because I'd rather have something that is kept updated.

Belarc Advisor generates a detailed profile of your computer that includes specs, software and their versions, updates and hotfixes installed and software licenses. Not sure how useful anyone will find this, but I primarily only use it for pulling license keys. (which is beginning to become a thing in the past with subscription based software on the rise.)

CutePDF Writer for converting/printing to PDF without having to bother with licensed software.

Unified Remote for controlling your PC with your smartphone. Might sound dumb but it comes in handy for me in certain situations. Obviously get the app on your phone and PC.

Does anyone have any recommendations for software that records your computer screen in addition to mic input? I'm a tiny bit tech savvy but multimedia software is foreign to me. I know of tons of programs that can record your screen but can't seem to find anything that will get audio input as well.

I haven't used the record function myself, but OBS has worked wonders for my brother and a few others I know.

noScript, end of discussion. This addon for chrome and firefox is the ultimate tool to prevent malware and adware from running on your computer. It's got a steep learning curve almost as bad as learning to play eve online but it's worth it. It's kept up-to-date, never bugs out, and, best of all, manages to make it relatively safe to go on sketchy piracy sites like kissanime.
Any advice you'd give to a rookie? I'm toying with it a bit in my spare time.

Also, does anyone have any suggestions for a free VPS? I'd kill to have a good paid one, but bills are more important.

All of the DPS videos I watch and that didn't even occur to me. I've heard of that program so many times but it just escaped me while I was looking for software. Thanks!

If you don't know what something does, shut it off. Worst case scenario, it breaks the page and you've learned that the script is vital; otherwise, if the page continues to load properly, it was an undesirable script that was tracking you or performing some malicious activity like load twitter links. Eventually you'll start memorizing what various common scripts do and learn to how to guess what a script does just by looking at its name.
