Is there a point to getting off of Chrome and Gmail if you still have an Android phone? I find myself in a position where I'd love to get away from both but I feel like I'm tethered to Google.

I use Firefox Beta on Android because it supports uMatrix and uBlock, it's simply a better option than the mostly extensionless Chrome on mobile.

Captain Obvious Tip of the Day: fuck the YouTube app, use any browser with an adblocker instead, no ads period.

Especially since that stupid fucking faggot with the Markiplier look started giving us seven minute moneymaking tutorials, you know who you are.

> recommending brutal doom over Russian Overkill
The new version of Brutal Doom is better for no reason other than that it has a Purist mode: Vanilla Doom with some slight rebalances, a lot of QoL, and a much more Brual Doom-esque feel. If you disagree then fuck you, fight me.

I might need to try that out then. I'd honestly love to completely get away from Google because I've run out of trust with them. Unfortunately there's not much choice of phones out there and I can't stand the iPhone.

Pretty surprised to see coinbase up there. It's good for newbies, but everything takes a fucking age and a half, and you pay for it too.

GDAX is owned by the same company as coinbase, but people have better times with GDAX. From what I understand, you can also transfer balances from coinbase to GDAX for free.

Also coinbase is based in America, but offer their services worldwide. And from what I've read, you can export private keys from coinbase too.

While we're shilling software, I gotta say that I've had a lot of fun with Wallpaper Engine.

Basically you can browse the steam workshop and download special desktop backgrounds. What makes them special is that they can move, play music, be interactive, etc. It's a blast to browse all the shit that's in the workshop, but of course not everything in there is high quality (since anyone can upload their weeb shit or a stolen youtube video). It also costs $4, which isn't a lot, but I kinda have the feeling there's something like it for free. I dunno.

Anyways, I think there is a lot of fun to be had with it.

Thank you for this I have been thinking of getting an VPN and was not sure what kind to trust.

Whoever recommended AdGuard thanks, I'm digging it so far. Also I'd like to recommend Halite, pretty decent torrent with no bloat and pretty good ui.
Halite is a FOSS, Windows-only BitTorrent client, based on the excellent libtorrent library developed by Arvid Norberg. The program also relies heavily on the Boost libraries. It is a fantastic replacement for the botnet client uTorrent, and shares many of the same features.

I'd also suggest anything from these pages.

Not sure if anyone has suggested this yet but I'm gonna throw out a recommendation for Tutanota email. It's automatically encrypted end-to-end if you're emailing another tutanota email. Much more secure than most email servers. I used to use Riseup. but they are less than reliable now as far as handing your info directly over to anyone who asks.

I use MEGA, 50Gb for free and Kim Dotcom is a bro
Since no one has mentioned this, but Kim Dotcom isn't a part of Mega any longer. The company is own by some chinese group. But still a pretty good upload service.

Co-Sign most of this. Replace OpenOffice with LibreOffice since OpenOffice is dead. Soulseek is OP and has extreme rare shit on there. Might not be in the highest of quality, but still. Also some great users with quality uploads on there as well.

@Null I know i'm late to the thread, but there's a website dedicated to helping users have more privacy and freedom without being spied on by the government.

http://privacytools.io/

It doesn't have ads, it basically lists recommended programs for privacy and free control.
Also see https://prism-break.org/en/all/

Concerning Doom:

If you wanna use mods with QZ/ZDoom, get ZDL. Allows you to pick mods, customize the load order, and launch.

Also, here's a list of the best mods for the game.

Brave on mobile truly is amazing. Desktop just doesn't work for me.

Utility: TeraCopy is a great file moving and copying tool that can verify data moved. Really good with lots of important files like image libraries or things off older CD/CDRs.

RealTemp is a quite old temp monitoring utility that is really good. Keeps track of current and highest temps and even ringing an alarm if your CPU hits a certain threshold.

EVGA Precision XOC is a fantastic GPU configuration tool. Optimize for speed, quietness or power usage. It does a great job.

SD Card Formatter which you can get from the actual SD card trade group which you can use to effectively and accurately format (both quick/full) all varieties of SD cards.

CCleaner is a nice utility to remove unneeded files from your PC from time to time. Includes some other utilities like a registry cleaner. Highly regarded and been around for years.

Office: LibreOffice, compatibility with MS stuff has improved a bit. I'm not sure whether it was Libre or OpenOffice but I read not to long ago a key aspect they were focusing on was a simplistic, almost old school, office program as opposed to the funky UIs and labyrinthian functionality.

Development: You really can't go wrong with Visual Studio Community it's amazing and combined with other mostly free tools like Unity you can create just about anything.
