,I'm currently reading Jared Diamond's "Guns, Germs and Steel" which attempts to answer why Europe (as well as a good bit of Asia) tended to do so much better than the rest of the world. It's really vary interesting, and a lot more complex than one would think. His theory is that success has less to do with superior intellect and more to do with opportunity and necessity. Some parts are kinda dry, but I think it's worth a look.
