Bigot Brigade Something Awful and Friends - The roller-coaster train-wreck embarrassing downfall of a Web 1.0 giant and its tick offspring like from Cloverfield

So let me get this straight

You
-Acknowledge the problem
-Agree it's killing SA
-Provide examples of how you were doing the same thing
-???
-want us to cut them some slack

I'm not sure if biblical wordwalls are the way to go but at least it's not ironic friendposting that makes me feel like I caught a re-run of "I Love Lucy" and get to laugh at how quaint their double beds are. I remember that trolling! HaHa! The 90s!

Yikes. Tough room!

OK I can tell you guys don't care for my comedy so I'm going to REAL POST for a change.

Listen, I understand the complaints about the way the forum is run. And yeah, sometimes I think the mods are a little to quick to shut down discussion of topics they find distasteful. It used to drive me crazy when they would shut down the doobie thread because they thought it was crazy. It bugs me when words like faggot or tranny are probatable. It also drives me crazy when I see readership of Gbs going down down down like a sinking ship because I love participating in threads and attempting to make good content but when there are so few people around, it makes that tough. I know there's plenty of reasons good posters are leaving but I know a factor for a lot of them is the mods shutting down discussion.

But eh, whatever. Things come and go.
Here's another thing, maybe a glimpse into the mind of a sa mod. Back when I had the star, I don't think I ever banned anybody and I did probations rarely. My thinking was I would just try to encourage what the kinds of threads I liked to read. I would do this by sticking what I thought was good and gassing threads that I saw were bad. I tried to limit my gassing to low effort or spammy type threads. My idea was that this would slowly morph Gbs towards the better.

Sounds good, and I'd say all the mods have a simular view point. But here's how it goes bad: I started viewing the forum like my own private rock garden or something, where I had to constantly tend to it to prune away the bad and water the good. I gassed lots of threads, tons of threads, desperately wanting to keep my hands on the wheel of comedy.

After a while, I rarely even looked at the mod queue to handle reports because I was so preoccupied with vetting and gassing threads. The one thing I was supposed to do as a mod I wasn't doing and instead I started multiple cold wars with posters who I viewed as "bad" because they were, in my view point, spamming the forum with tons of threads. I'd Gass em on sight and they'd come back just as quick with three more.

Eventually they demodded me, and I agree with their decision to do so.

This is the first time I've aired any of this out and my intent is not to try and get attention or anything, but just give a case study on how a mod (in my case a bad mod) might progress, and to hopefully lead you guys into, I dunno, cutting them some slack.

At the end of the day it's just a stupid website for making dumb jokes. It's not worth getting riled up about.

So in conclusion, I like your website here, it's funny. I like making fun of people and weirdos and I like the cool forum software. It's funny busting goons and mods chops about stuff. I understand the reason behind "doxxing" is to see the over reaction it takes. But think about how some of these people youre posting information on and humiliating are already half or fully nuts as is, is it really all that funny if it drives them to take their own life or someone else's? This stuff has real world consequences and if is just being done in the name of laughs it's honestly pretty sad.

OK real posting done.. Thank you for your time

lol calm down

What's the deal with FYAD's obsession with the Star Citizen thread, anyway? The only thing I enjoyed about FYAD was the goonlulz thread, bc they caught all the very best autists and trannies, but the most recent goonlulz thread has almost exclusively been about Star Citizen.

Most of the FYADs aren't interested in that, it's more a cross section of Imp Zone posters. FYAD rejects for the most part. FYAD kind of keeps to itself these days.

If anyone is a bigger piece of admin-controlled shit than BBG, it's that ArfJason guy. At one point when they were trying to kill the Xbone thread, he had an auto-post script set up so anytime he made a post anywhere else it would spam the Xbone thread as well. There were pages of that thread that were just his post over and over (something dumb like "it has the wrong RAM lol"). Again, the posters in that thread were cool enough to just ignore him or make a running joke out of him and after a few days he gave up.

Oh, and how much do you want to bet that his autopost script was made by his admin buddy ZDR, who knows the coding for the forums?

ZDR owns an xbox one and was so upset at the games forum making fun of it he tried to have it killed multiple times.

no u lurk more

2. appealing to our sense of humanity is basically the only way people of interest have ever managed to painlessly resolve it because we are all humans at heart

I respect where you're coming from here, but the issue is that this is the internet, if some words put on a website somewhere make you do something stupid, regardless of your mental health, that's on you. None of this post-modernist self-fellating bullshit applies here or in real life. The reality of a person being responsible to and for themselves seems foreign to a lot of these troons, so watching the lemmings march off the cliff isn't only fun, it's also reminding some folks of the reality that safe spaces, echo chambers and that kind of shit being bad and for sad losers

Well, the problem is, Lowtax or the admins should be stopping mod behavior like that, and they should be doing it across the board. Lady Ambien had the right idea with her post in D&D telling mods to stop punishing for contrasting viewpoints. But of course she was immediately shut down.

The moderation rules should be simple:
1. Start from the perspective that all speech is allowed.
2. Is a post illegal (child porn/warez/copyright/whatever could actually get the site in trouble)? Nuke that.
3. Is a post pure spam? Not "white noise," because that's a subjective determination, but like spam advertising someone's site or multiple posts in a row to burn down a thread, etc? Nuke that.
4. Is a post NSFW in a non-NSFW place? Nuke that.
5. Is a thread really in the wrong place? Like someone started a politics thread in Games? Move it to the right place.
6. Is a post actual hate speech? Not just using a no-no word, but like seriously advocating death on all gay people or something? Nuke that.

Otherwise, consider why you are about to push that ban/gas/sticky/probate button. Is it because it offended you? Too bad, fuck you. Is it because you disagree with the poster? Too bad, fuck you. Is it because you didn't find it funny or think it is too "low effort?" Too bad, fuck you. All of these things can be self-policed by the forum users. If a poster is terrible, people will tell them they are terrible. If a thread is unfunny, people will say "this sucks" and it'll die on its own. It should not be the moderator's decision to control what is talked about or to enforce their own vision of how they want threads to be. If you don't think a thread is "good" but there's forty people in it posting away, then too bad, fuck you. Someone is finding it entertaining, and that's the WHOLE POINT OF THE PLACE.

Something like the above should be communicated to the entire moderation and admin staff and enforced. But that would require Lowtax to have his hand on the wheel.

And of course, we could never have an open dialogue about this on the SA forums because we'd be banned, probated, remembered and banned later in a different thread, or just fucking shut down by the admins.

First of all, thank you for taking the time to actually write all of this out and give some insight on how things played out for you personally. I knew that you'd been demodded, but I never really had the 'full picture' of things, and I don't mean this with any manner of offense, but by the time you were demodded, going by what you explained above, you deserved what you got.

That was one of the things that really caught my interest about the Farms a number of years ago when I was just lurking and keeping up with the CWC content and really little more than that. People are free to post whatever they want, however they want, as long as they follow a small ruleset thats not the least bit unreasonable. Sure, shitposts will get locked and sent to spergatory, but that happens when you're not shitting in the designated shitting streets.

On SA, each board was it's own unique monster, and what ultimately drove me away was how tired I was of watching every little thing I said as that inherent fear of 'oh boy, yet another probe because I said something that went against the 'consensus' that the mods and users of that area felt was appropriate.' I'm sorry, but if I want to talk about my work day and recant the story of how someone I was forced to work with was a fucking retarded faggot, I'm going to, and in those exact words because it's just the mannerisms of how I explain things and provide accurate context to the story. Now, in no way am I slighting the mentally handicapped, or gays for that matter, but there was a point when it just didn't MATTER anymore.

What you did with your gassing was bad, sure, but it wasn't you PUSHING your personal political/worldview/whatever on the userbase and punishing them because they hurt your feefee's because they used a word that triggers you because you're a petulant manchild who believes he's a beautiful latinx princess. Dick move from you? Absolutely. But it wasn't turning a board into an echo chamber where you either cater to the 'group think' or you get BTFO because you're in THEIR safe space and triggering them.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As a separate aside, and in regards to your concerns of what we've done to the troon userbase and some of the moderation team/admins, it's going to be a different answer from each and every Kiwi that took part in it, so I won't even presume to speak for everybody. But in my personal opinion, the vast majority of those troons that were doxxed already had so much of their life out there, that it's REALLY not going to matter one way or another. Transtrenders will always be transtrenders because the oppression points and asspats that come from that 'hardship' is all that they care about at the end of the day. I don't think a single REAL transgender was even brought up or doxxed in this situation, because lets face it, its their thing and thats the end of it. If they want to just do them and move on with their life quietly, I personally have no issue with that at all. But when you're screaming into the echo chamber "I AM TRANZ. PAY ATTENTION TO ME YOU DEGENERATE CISHETS" at every waking moment, you've got some real fucking issues going on there, and the fact that someone took your publicly available information and put it all in one place, isn't going to do much. All it will do is garner further reaction as they scream of MYSOGGYKNEE, OPPRESSION and TRANSPHOBIA because they'll never truly understand just how insane they really are.

Mods, was mostly just to prove a point and bring light to just how batshit insane SOME of them are(Genesplicer might not be liked by a number of people, but he's not crazy. He just makes really terrible dad jokes(which is expected, being a middle school teacher)). Take for example all the ones in question that are SJW's to the extreme, and just how tight-knit of a 'community' they've formed by essentially driving Lowtax out of his very home because in todays day and age, those who scream the loudest are the ones that get the attention. Welcome to the wonderful world we live in, where the vocal minority, even when completely wrong, can find an echo chamber to virtue signal in and 'people' will resound it unendingly because its the only thing they know. Most normal people couldn't give two shits about some tranny bellowing on the internets that someone misgendered them because they look like a swamp ogre, but those types of people are smart enough to not cater to the lowest denominator and have better things to do with their time instead of using social media.

Thank you for your time
It's nice to have an SA mod's perspective on it, and yeah that seems to happen to everyone who has been a mod at SA. Except for Koalas March, who started pulling that agenda shit on literally day one. But still like, if Lowtax told you to ease off on banning people over words you didn't like, would you have pulled a mutiny? Did you ever band together with other mods, admins, and/or imp zone posters to get threads you didn't like shut down through the back door?

As I recall, you were one of the better GBS mods, even if you did succumb to Mod Disease. I just don't know that these people have the self-awareness you have.

Yikes.

Thank you for dropping the shitty act. Your thoughts on the subject are certainly reasonable and decent and all the people making shitposts about not reading them should probably shut the fuck up. Forum moderation is a hard and thankless job, and no matter what direction you take there will always be people unhappy with it. I absolutely agree that it's insane that people would want to 'punish' bad forum moderators instead of just finding someplace that's moderated more to their tastes. It's a big internet with room enough for everybody. And you're right that doxing people could have real-world consequences and lead to serious tragedy. I absolutely agree with everything you've said.

However, we get an achievement sticker every time we drive somebody to suicide.

SWB, I thought you were a relatively evenhanded mod, I enjoyed your threads, and you seem like a very nice and decent man. But even a newcomer can tell that your humanity and conscience is at odds with the culture here at KF. So, LOL GTFO.
