I've always wanted to know what the fanbase thought of this show. I know absolutely nothing about sonic whatsoever, never played any of the games or anything like that. But my nephew watched this all the time when I would babysit him and I grew very fond of the characters and adult wink nod humor. It has become one of my go to brainless shows for when i'm stressed out and i've seen it several times now, i like it a lot even though it can be childish at times.

Did fans appreciate the schtick or did they find it insulting? Also are there any inside jokes I would have missed?

I liked the show, dare I say it was definitely one of the more engaging Sonic cartoons along with AoStH and the later half of Sonic X to a fair degree in my opinion.

I think the show's biggest strength was it's characterization approach in where characters would be far more chill with each other and conflict isn't treated as serious business most of the time, which allowed for some interesting premises like Sonic and Eggman being teammates on a quiz show, Knuckles trying a brief stint as a lawyer and Tails being suckered into joining a gang of petty evildoers.

The only critiques I have with Boom is that while the animation is decent enough sometimes it can be stiff but they mostly worked that out with the 2nd season, Amy's 'girl-power'-boasting on rare occasion feels incredibly forced and embarassing, and that Shadow's rare appearance in the show has no real in-universe justification for it other than them really just going 'oh he's the 2nd-most popular character in the series' that it feels hamfisted in and just to check out a box.

Sticks was pretty much the biggest standout element from the show hence they included her in the Rio 2016 Olympics and Runners games as well as getting her own page in the Sonic Channel character gag comics from the series' 25th anniversary despite not even being part of the mainline games herself, so I presume there were plans to incorporate her as a canon foreigner into the series at some point but it fell through?
A real shame since her character was pretty entertaining and I'd loved to see her comment on how different her friends are in mainline series continuity, unless they'd re-introduce her proper.

If this standalone show entices you to dip into the series with some games, go for it, just don't expect the characters to be as chill as in Boom, ha.

............. is it?

They've been best friends since Sonic 2. What kind of conflict could possibly arise for then to start butting heads all of a sudden? If anything it would feel forced and out of nowhere. It would have to be a conflict where it would be justified for either Sonic and/or Tails to hate each other. This isn't Knuckles where Eggman can easily trick him for the 15th billionth time (which even THAT I find annoying).
It would need some sort of justification, like mind-controlling Tails, which Lost Word teased, but never did anything. It's mostly for gameplay purposes, like how in MMX series there's at least one duel between Mega and Zero. It woudl shake up things a little...

not to be just totally pessimistic, but I honestly think at this point it's sort of a waste of time to think about any interesting story and character potential out of the sonic franchise.

But sadly, only Movie Sonic has some development these days. Even Mario had some character development, which is embarrassing.

The IDW comic from what I gather is basically just things happening and the only characters who really show any changes are the OCs. I think SEGA is at it's peak 'it's a brand' period, for better or worse.
Don't forget the SJW elements which are forced in, and how the story is as engaging as watching paint dry once you realize the main cast is untouchable.

Mario at least has a bunch of RPGs
Sonic had 1 and then it was abandoned due to poor sales and Penders being Penders. Should have hired Obsidian rather than Bioware. Nowadays though? No western company is free of pozz and so are the Japanese ones, Sonic Gen Remaster already was censored some minor details because of fat jokes and girls being literally untouchable. A Sonic RPG would be even worse in Current Year.

There's that reference in Frontiers, but it doesn't count, until/if she shows up in one of the main games.

>Higher-ups fucking over development. (I'd seriously wonder how Boom would have turned out if SEGA didn't fuck Big Red Button over with that Nintendo contract deal)
It still would have been shit even without the bugs, performance issues, and placeholder textures..

Sonic and Eggman being teammates on a quiz show
One thing i've noticed after many watches is that somebody from team sonic and eggman actually have almost as many episodes getting along as not.
they took the piss out of that too, surprisingly:
They do it a few times, one of my favorite lines from the show. I lost my shit when i heard this and my nephew didn't understand what was so funny. One of my first "you'll understand one day" moments.

If mind controlling works, then Sonic Rivals 2 actually already did that. At the end of Sonic and Tails' campaign the final boss Ifrit mind controls other one you're not playing as so you have to fight them during the final boss fight.

God, that was painful. I hate that fucking reddit tone that Knuckles uses here. Fuck the soy writer who put that in.

Ice cold take but the Simpsons did this joke way better decades ago:

Sorry for being a misery guts but Sonic characters lecturing people about feminism is really annoying. As much as I made fun of games like Shadow and '06 for being edge-fests back in the day I did prefer it in hindsight.

I liked it. It was pretty funny.
Sticks is probably one of the best new characters in years, and the only new one since the 2010s that gels so smoothly with the main cast while doing something new instead of just being "girl who's friendly" and they still REFUSE to do a damn thing with her aside from a quick little wink to her existing somewhere in Frontiers which we all know isn't actually going anywhere. Same as tails going "Lol, I was horribly inconsistent a week ago sonic, I'll be cooler next game!" instead of actually having him be cooler in THIS game and not have him hanging around as a hologram the whole time.

I liked Boom. It's a pretty funny show. I like the one where they just casually find out Knuckles is homeless and he's been living under Tails' porch for an indeterminate amount of time. I also like the one where Robotnik moves in with Sonic and is a shitty roommate.

I didn't watch it until probably a month or two ago, I'd seen clips but never cared but randomly decided to check it out and referencing Jesus Christ Chris Chan and the arms actually made me laugh out loud, I was totally caught off guard. I mostly think some of the premises are funnier than the actual execution though for basically the whole show.

Sticks isn't a bad addition, I'd like to see her in a mainline game but I really didn't like her in the show but exclusively because her voice made me want to be deaf. She's funny and a good new character but it's probably because I basically binged it over a week but God damn did I hate that voice. I'm one of those people that's more sensitive to that shit though.

My biggest complaint is the fact we never got any extended cast at all besides shadow and vector both show up once. I would have liked to see more characters like Big or the other Chaotix or something in that show with a funny gimmick.

Blaze: "Welcome to the club!"

To be fair, Blaze is even harder to use due to being a combination of royalty (which means she has more resources than Sonic's hobo-friends), can fly, has fire-powers, and has a super-mode.

He does something in the DLC with the Golden Ending (TM), which IMO was unnecessary, and it was an obvious attempt at padding and experimenting with movesets for Sonic's friends.

No, the best episode is the one where Sonic is shown to be the worst roommate ever that gets into Tails' nerves. The funny thing is that "real" Sonic doesn't even have a home and crashes into Tails' garage or something.

Shadow was only here because he has fans, he was the same dour, boring bore from 2010 to today. Another character supposed to show up was a teenager Cream, who would be a teenager with attitude type of girl.

I didn't mind when Shadow showed up, because it felt like it was making fun of the fact he was only there because he was popular. I didn't particularly like the episode but I wouldn't complain he was there and did nothing or wasn't interesting because that was the joke.

I just wish the other sonic characters had lived in that village too and done something from time to time. Titty bat could have been a funny character doing something like every time she shows up she steals something useless and ridiculous, big could constantly be fishing in odd places like a sink or bathtub or whatever and so on. I just think they could have been utilized at least as background gag characters. If the game had been successful I'm sure the show would have eventually had more of the cast show up as boom versions.

They must've spent quite a bit of the budget on that one-off shrew character that was just Jet on a skateboard. Or that computer virus character as well. There were definitely questionable decisions made during its production.

I think we need to remember that the show was made during Sonic's dark ages where SEGA was removing much of the Sonic cast due to years of 90s babies complaining that the 2000s ruined Sonic and bloated his cast. SEGA was hellbent on trying to fix the weird internet criticisms, so they removed basically everything Adventure and beyond brought as apparently all the characters (besides Shadow) were annoying and unneeded. They also tried reverting the entire setting back to the Genesis days, so endless Green Hill.

It really can't be understated how much the 2020 Movie saved the franchise. The new wave of fans brought in a lot more confidence and requests to see the 2000s cast, hence why SEGA has largely changed their views on the matter.

To throw in an unpopular opinion since we are talking about cast members, Infinite was wasted and should really come back in some form. Currently he is marked as dead, barring him from even appearing in the Racing spin-offs, which was a stupid move on their part. He had too good of a design and gimmick to be locked to Forces.

I don't think the live-action was that influential, especially when it itself was something that only really referenced Sonic 1. The backlash to the first reveal of it and success of the final product after they redid Sonic's design seemed to get the foot in the door to make the sequels have stronger elements from later games. Sonic Team was already kind of trying to go back on the "meta era" with Forces in 2017, with it having most of the major characters, trying to have a dark story, and them bringing back vocal tracks (which they said in an interview that Generations and Lost World didn't have any literally because SoA told them to stop because it was cringe). It just didn't work out that well because intra-company politics were still keeping them going all the way, like trying to force Classic Sonic in there and doing that stupid shit where they rewrote the script 3 times passing it back and forth between the Japanese team and English localization team.

I haven't played a new Sonic game in years, so can somebody explain to me what this weird tarot card shit with Amy is all about?

It's a shame Blaze more or less has her own thing going on that we only occasionally get glimpses of whenever she isn't just showing up for Sonic and his friends to go "Oh hi blaze!" before she fucks off back to an entirely different dimension.

It's not new. Apparently as far back as the Sonic CD manual Amy uses Tarot cards to divine Sonic's location. It's how she always knows roughly where Sonic is.

Note in '06 she keeps talking about "women's intuition" in Dusty Desert. I don't know for sure, but I'd be willing to bet in the Japanese version she talks about psychic abilities, if not the cards themselves.

You know, if they used the whole "psychic/tarot" aspect, Amy could have been a better character than what she currently is. Like Rose from the Street Fighter series... uses magic and shit for battles and guides the good guys along the way and warns the bad guys of their impending doom.

Instead we have a psychopath with a big fuck-off hammer.
