Sony forces Japanese developers to censor sexual content - For Japanese audiences too.

Gotta love NicheGamer shamelessly spinning this for the KIA outrage clicks. No, it's not just a game that "contains sexual themes", it's a pornographic visual novel. The dev admitted as much. Releasing the uncensored version on PC and a safe version for consoles has been standard practice for over a decade, because mainstream game retailers are wary about carrying 18+ stuff, and they represent a viable chunk of the market. It's also not being completely censored from Japanese audiences at all, considering that this is a port of a game that already came out last year.

Sony's building up a track record of being shitty to deal with and forcing delays over their content policies, though. So even if their Japan policy isn't really censoring much that isn't generally removed anyway, it still deserves to be killed off for wasting everyone's time.

Okay, but then why did Warrior's Orochi 4 get their jiggle physics toned down for PS4 - which was pretty much the single build ported to Xbox and PC - and Nintendo Switch got to keep the jiggle physics?

It could be sloppy work, as the article says, but I'm not sure myself.

EDIT: It could be the framerate tied to something, because for whatever damned reason Japan keeps doing that. Tying the framerate to things like weapons decay and AI intelligence -- no really, somehow the framerate can make friendly AI dumber in Fatal Bullet.

This is kind of what happens when you shift your corporate headquarters to California, the culture changes. What kills me is their demand that smaller Japanese companies appeal the decision in fucking English. That's just plain rude and not very progressive at all. Shame on them.
It’s beyond rude. It’s insulting. They’re asking Japanese developers to fuck around with a half-a-day timezone difference, in a language they aren’t guaranteed to know, located in a market that they may not intend to release in, with people they have to know are puritanical at this point, when they’re supposedly a subsidiary of a Japanese company. Japanese politeness be damned. If I were them I’d be forming a mob in front of Sony Japan.

Did you even read the article or did you just feel the need to sperg about KIA? It's not just pornographic VNs. Senran Kagura got censored. Warrior's Orochi 4 got censored. Even non-pornographic release of VN got censored. Look at this, Sony even forced devs to censor girl's navel.

I only play games with lewd mods (Crusader Kings 2, Mount and Blade: Warband, etc) or if it isn’t too much of a stretch for me to pretend I have a yuri harem (Star Traders: Frontiers after I ditch the male crew on some shithole planet). So whatever, I guess. PC Master Race.

I was gonna get a PS4 for whatever console games are coming out because that seems to be the multiplat machine of choice for console games. I do really like the “musou game 62748: Empires” games and the PC ports of those are usually trash or nonexistent (I only like the Empires editions), so that’s kind of a bummer. 4chan determined the PC port of Warriors Orochi has bugged boobie jiggling, it still works at 30 FPS.

Don't forget Omega Labyrinth Z's port being cancelled despite work being fine tuned and having passed both PEGI and ESRB.

To be more precise SIE's headquarters is in San Mateo, that's only 20 miles south of San Francisco (AKA The Gayest and Most PC Place on Earth). I guess the fumes from the nightly LGBTQ+ orgies and other woke nonsense is reminding some of the employees that home and leisure is just a wee drive away from work.

but I don't think Sony should be the one saying they can or can't be on their platform. It would be like Philips saying you can't put Porn on VHS tapes.
Not really. Sony doesn't dictate what you can put on a BluRay disc.
But it does dictate what gets Sony's DRM, so that the PS4 will execute the disc's contents.

Consoles were always walled gardens, that the manufactures have complete control over.
It's nothing new. Nintendo refused many games because of excessive violence for example.

It's why you need to hack it just to run homebrew.
And it's why I don't like consoles.

There should be a porn-rating for the ESRB so Adult isn't so stigmatized that people censor random shit to avoid getting it. Shiggy diggy.

Might be on them, might not. If it comes out that Sony is actually censoring content from 15+ or 17+ games, they'll have officially crossed a threshold in the industry. The Japanese can tolerate games being censored in foreign countries, since it doesn't majorly affect them, and they can tolerate 18+ games being censored, because there are plenty of domestic pressures to do that anyway. But if you force 90% of the audience of these softcore fanservice games to not be able to see what they've paid for, they will absolutely start shit, and they'll take their business elsewhere.

I did, and I smelled a rat, so I went to check what exactly it was that the dev was saying.
“[…] At last week’s event we discussed applying for an application request at Sony [to release the game on PS4], since we’re close to finishing up the master version of the game. However, we have not yet passed through the application process.

“Now, Sony seems to have a policy prohibiting porting 18+ games worldwide at this time. And this game more or less has 18+ content so it’s going through a very serious and strict content review investigation. There are difficult questions you have to answer to confirm [what sort of content is in the game]. [The form] also requires being written out in English.”

“So right now I’m in the middle of answering all of the questions in order to complete the application for certification, and still trying to learn and understand in order to move forward. It’s a dreadful and terrifying experience… but I’m getting better at it as it becomes more clear.”

The other cases mentioned in the article were all western localizations. Sony's been meddling with the localization process a lot in ways they shouldn't, that much is clear. Accusing them of censoring developers in their home country is a whole other thing, for the reasons I mentioned above, and so far there's not much to write home about. They're being strict and inconvenient, for sure, but they haven't (yet) decided to nuke anime titties from orbit.

I haven't played it yet, but I heard the new Red Dead game had tits in it as well as horsecock, so what's with the double standard of west getting it easy while the nips aren't?

EDIT: Forgot to mention, the dream daddy dating game getting promoted by sony while Senren Kaqgura gets shit on, despite both those games being fanservicey in different ways without nudes.

Western games can have incidental nudity and fanservice, but unlike the Japanese scene, there's not a whole genre just flat-out saying "this is a game where you ogle/have sex with hot women". It just doesn't fly. Dream Daddy has you ogling hot dudes, of course, but that's not something people generally get up in arms about.

Japanese localizations of western games also get tossed through the wringer thanks to CERO. They really don't like American-made murder simulators, and frequently demand cuts to the violence to avoid a 18+ rating for what would be a T or M here. Sony doesn't seem to give a single shit about telling devs to be sensitive to their standards, so yeah, definitely an America-centric double standard going on.

Theres 3 games so far that have been censored in Japan. So it appears to be a trend and a relatively new one at that.

https://gematsu.com/2018/10/visual-...aystation-hindered-by-recent-sony-regulations

Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai: Library Party: A PlayStation 4 version of this game was never announced. A PS Vita version was released in 2015 and a Switch version in July 2018. The game’s developer, August, is reported as saying the following in a Summer Comiket-distributed booklet: “We want to release a PS4 version, but SIE’s regulations have gotten strict, so we are looking into a counterplan.”

  • Nora to Oujo to Noraneko Heart (PS4) : The PlayStation 4 version conceals various scenes (links NSFW) behind rays of light, including skin, swimwear, and underwear. The Switch version that launched alongside the PlayStation 4 version was released without these regulations. The PS Vita version released in 2017 is also without said edits.
