Elden Ring also came out at the same time, with actual good character designs too. Elden Ring was so big that 'normal' gamers were playing it (and subsiquently getting MATI when they die). The only online discourse over Horizon I ever saw was soyny's fellating it on twitter and people clowning on them, all that stopped after Elden Ring launched, and I have seen nothing about Horizon since.
Region locking has all but died outside of China (even Nintendo don't do it anymore, and made a point of saying that when they revealed the Switch). Its still alive in China due to Chinese government censorship.

I think this might be because of software, Nintendo's region locking for their cartridge consoles was just done by having a different shape/pins, which can be overcome by changing some plastic blockers or an adapter. The handhelds all use the same design. So they probably didn't even consider adding some software check because of hardware or something. The 3ds has more advanced firmware and got updates etc, probably finally added region data to the cart and run a check in the firmware.
DSi "enhanced" DS games had region locking when played on a DSi or 3DS, that may have been the start. I also heard some Chinese DS games wouldn't work on foreign DSs, but that it was purely because they looked for China-only system fonts and they worked on later systems from any region.

I don't want to waste any more brain power than I have to in order to remember that Picture Perfect: Hair Salon for the Nintendo DSi, a game made for 14 year old girls that came out 14 years ago, does not in fact run on European DSs, to satiate pedantic internet autists.

I can't even login to my Vita anymore either, their auto generated passwords just don't work. Not that it matters too much, I don't really care to upload my trophies and virtually all online games are probably dead, but it's still gay. You practically need to hack old Sony consoles these days.
I remember being more impressed by PhysX features in PC games like the early Batman Arkham games and the first Mirror's Edge, and that was 15 years ago (time sure does fly by, huh). Jumps between home console generations keep getting smaller and smaller although handheld devices did massively improve compared to how things used to be.
It's why I believe japanese entertainment media (be videogames, comics and anime) have gotten a lot more popular since the past decade because the western counterparts are struggling to have attractive-looking fictional characters, or even have appealing art directions in general. The heavy consumption through Internet only made things easier to happen.
I think a lot of the graphics is just diminishing returns. It takes much bigger improvements for things to be noticeable these days.

So its optical tracking combined with only having 4 cameras on the front only? The Oculus headsets already have awful shaky tracking and those have cameras all the way around the thing, 4 cameras is not enough for VR, especially with inside out optical tracking. The thing is going to be shaky and will lose track the second your controller moves behind you outside of the camera's field of view. I despise Facebook for killing PC VR, this is probably going to be the same.
