This post reminded me of something: Playstation is still missing a brand mascot.
Sure, specific consoles had their de-facto mascots (like Sackboy for PS3), but there's no character that represents all 5 gens of PS + 2 portable gens.

With any big corporation, especially in video games, there's always a mascot and/or memorable titles to give said corporation an identity. It's obvious that Nintendo has Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, etc. (and technically Pokemon as well). Sega has more than just Sonic, such as Yakuza, NiGHTS, Jet Set Radio, Puyo Puyo, Crazy Taxi, etc. Even Microsoft has Master Chief and many more (including Flight Simulator).

So the real question is this, does Sony ever have a corporate identity in the video game industry? The only identity that I can find for Sony is their movie/TV output such as Spider-Man, Ghostbusters, Men in Black, Charlie's Angels, Karate Kid, Seinfeld, among others.
 
For how much Sony was desperate to have a Smash killer fighting crossover game but failed miserably? Yes. For the actual quality of the game itself? No
The entire thing was just a parade of dead series they tried to bring back or shit that wasn’t actually popular. It trying to skinsuit Smash bros is hilarious because they basically didn’t try to keep any family friendly series alive.

PS4 titles had a identity of third-person action games. Vita had a idetity of games being short. That's it really.

The Japanese branch of SCE had the cat-looking character (井上トロ - Inoue Toro) as a mascot but it slowly fell into obscurity alongside with Japan Studio once the american branch seized power.

God of War, Last of Us, Horizon, and maybe Spiderman.
And also both Neil Cuckman's Uncharted and Last of Us. But all titles are somethey only came during the mid-2000s onward. Only companies such as Nintendo, Sega, Microsoft, Capcom, Konami, Squeenix and Ubisoft have already established their corporate identities especially early on (for better or worse), but Sony only did that in the gaming industry a bit too late

I'm probably late to the Vita discussion a few pages back, but I just wanted to comment that the Vita had a phenomenal dpad. Not even a snoy, but I had a Vita for some weeb games and I really loved it. Played an autistic amount of Samurai Warriors/Warriors Orochi on it.
 
Everybody did. Sony could've let him be PS2 mascot if rights weren't owned by Universal.

Being a music and Hollywood company, Sony fucked the rights to Spyro and Crash up. Universal owned both, but Sony owns the rights to the PS1 games for each themselves. It's why they were all available day 1 when PSN launched, and if Sony bothered to make a current PS1 emulator would still be up for download.
 
Sony got the studios in the end, which is all that really matters. Lack of a consistent mascot certainly hasn't hurt console sales.
 
Every time I see that name, I just think of this image:
I’m surprised that Sony hasn’t just given them Spyro as a DLC character at this point, but part of me thinks some Japanese Man at Nintendo hates Western furries with the rage of all Japanese Nationalists throughout history and I thank him for denying it.
 
The PS3 didn't drive profits in its own division but it saved Blu-Ray, which people were saying had lost the HD war before it even began*, and basically turned that loss into a huge gain.
Who gives a shit about Blu-ray? I don't know a single person with a Blu-ray player, and by the time Blu-ray came out, physical media had become irrelevant in the media space as everybody went digital.

The closest Sony had to true mascots was was Crash and Spyro, but they never owned the rights. They tried to make Sackboy a mascot to a certain extent, but it never really took. None of their major character's now are really mascot potential, like Mickey Mouse, Mario, or Sonic. They simply aren't well known enough, iconic enough, or cute enough to function in that role.

Does it though? Game's featuring Nintendo's little plumber sell gang busters, no matter what it is. Spyro was created by Insomniac, which is now just another woke corporate hell hole, churning out shit super hero games. Naughty Dog, the creators of Crash, has been gutted and destroyed by Neil Druckmann, turned into a shell of itself. And its Microsoft who now own the rights to Crash and Spyro. Seriously, who came out better in this deal? It sure as hell wasn't Sony.
