Well I'm new to the thread. It looks dumb and I don't think it'll sell well. If it's like the Gamepad it may be laggy and choppy if you get too far from the console
It is pretty frustrating that they're going with that instead of a standalone handheld. I'm sticking to my guns that the PSVita could have been successful if Sony had given a shit about marketing it at all.

We're in Clown World, so of course there's no current pocket-size handheld. Instead, we've got plenty of chunky bastards centered around game streaming. Which you can do with your phone, any current controller, and a $15 clip.

I used to want a Vita 2 but now I'm glad Sony isn't doing it, I don't even want to be tempted to support those faggots ever again. I do miss actual pocketable handhelds though. I hope they at least make a budget end-of-life model, like a Switch Mini as they did with GBA.

I might have played Vita more than any other system in my life, and still play it over a decade later, they definitely had something good going with it. They dropped the ball so damn hard, there's no good reason it should have failed, unlike the equally amazing Dreamcast.

I'm honestly disappointed that Sony doesn't have a strategy of making a portable console that can run (digital) PS4 games directly. If they pull it off they could extend the life of the PS4 as now games will be made for the PS4 Portable that are backwards compatible with the PS4.

We're almost at that point, but I admit we're not fully there

Just port it to PC so people can play it on the Steam Deck

I doubt they will do anything other than the Switch Lite, which if you haven't seen one, is pretty much the exact same size as a Vita.
I had one, and it's certainly a bit bigger than a Vita to my recollection, which itself, even in its 2000 revision, is just a tad bigger and heavier than I'd like.

I'd be surprised if they don't do another Switch iteration, it'd be kind of foolish on their part. They've never even had a price cut on any model, they could probably drop a pretty cheap model and still make a profit while pushing software even more.

That makes a lot more sense for Sony, they're already putting games on PC anyway.

I might be confusing it with the 3ds XL actually, I know they are all roughly the same size give or take a few centimetres, but I don't think they will do anything smaller even if they do another Switch revision. Honestly after using my Deck a lot my Switch now feels tiny and even more uncomfortable to hold, just sucks that its too big for a pocket, although I can fit the Switch.

The Steam Deck is so big it makes lugging around a PS1 with that little attachable screen seem small and light by comparison, probably (been forever since I had a PS1).

Ah, man, if they could port the entire Vita library to Steam Deck that'd be amazing. Not sure how many they have the rights to.

I wanna play Freedom Wars again.

I mean the best you can do with a pocket-handehld these days is mod one of those Raspberry PI ones with RecalBox
The handhelds that seem to work with this are
I only learned about this a few days ago, so idk how well this all works
Raspberry Pi prices are still fucked and even if they weren't, if your interest in just in a small portable handheld for retro gaming, you can get a cheaper and more powerful device with some chink handheld like an Ambernic or the like.

I’ve been where you are, so I’m gonna save you some time.
Unless you're fixated on using a Pi specifically, there are much better "all-in-one" options. The Odroid Go Super is fine from what I've heard, but the current most popular lowish-end options are from Retroid (the Pocket 2S, Pocket 3+, or Pocket Flip depending on your preferred form factor; they're all about equal in what they can emulate). The Miyoo Mini Plus is also a good option, and Anbernic has a wide variety of systems that are hit or miss. If you don't like ordering from chink-shit sites that take weeks to ship, you can also sometimes order from Amazon and get free Prime shipping, but expect a markup in price.

You mainly want to think about form factor, power, screen resolution (you don't want "the biggest resolution", you want whatever is closest to a multiple of the resolution of whatever you're trying to emulate, though it doesn't matter as much for 3D games), and operating system (Android and Linux both have their pros and cons, and Linux will often have two or three similar choices of distro). Retro Game Corps is a well-liked reviewer that I recommend, and he has a website full of tutorials.

Also, as far as Raspberry Pi operating systems go (or other single board computers, RPi is actually a bad choice right now due to its scarcity), Batocera is definitely the best, though RecalBox is fine too.

Dude, no, like, I want something no bigger than a Vita that can play Grand Theft Auto 5. That should be a thing by now, but it isn't. I have a very old hacked PSVita that can play anything a Raspberry Pi 4 with Recalbox can, and more. It's great, but it's also 11 years old.

It's gonna bomb so bad it'll make the Vita look like the PS2 by comparison. They'll bundle that shit with PS5s just to get rid of them and add perceived value.

Hahaha, I got my PSVita TV with my PS4 that way.

So much of the Vita library would play better on Steam Deck. Everything that used the back trackpad as triggers could finally have real ones. Everything that used the touchscreen could have more much-needed space. Touch My Katamari was really good, too.

Too bad there's no camera or back trackpad on the Steam Deck. Now no one new will get to play Frobisher Says.

Wow, I didn't know they did that lol. I remember seeing them for $20 a pop at one point, and I still regret not scooping them up, I should've known better. They go for a lot now, or did a few years or so back anyway (probably even more now if anything...).

I guess I didn't notice, but I think you're right, there is no camera on it, huh? Switch doesn't either IIRC. Since 3DS and Vita both had cameras, in my head I think of it as a standard feature now, but I guess not.

If Sony was to make another handheld, may as well just make a Steam Deck style system, the only way it would get support. Just put more money into porting older games to pc and create a custom PSN store for it which has PS1/PSP and PS2 emualted games available on it.

Sony is already splitting dev times between PS5 and VR, with them not putting out much in the way of PS5 games so far. No way could they support a 3rd system with unique games.

Vita was a good bit of tec when it came out, but it's support was dogshit after the 1st year, and many of the big games like CoD and Resistance should not have been put out in the state they were, that just sped up the death of it. Do question why Uncharted and Killzone were never ported to the PS4 like the rest of the of note Vita games.
