The thing thats pissing me off the most about this outage is Gran Turismo 7. Actually not a bad game, theres a decent amount if content and different cars you can buy with credits you earn in-game. Whats the most annoying is if you play in Offline Mode, it removed all the cars youve earned/purchased, disables the credit system and gives you a locked specific selection of cars and tracks. It removes most of the content and makes the game stupid as fuck.

The other stupid thing about this is that people are complaining that we need a return to physical copies of games when the problem is (in this case) live service gaming, not physical copies.
If anything, this is a blessing in disguise. Companies are trying to push online only as an alternative to tangible ownership/access to products you buy with your money. I say this begrudgingly as I don't see Sony's goodwill being tarnished with this outrage long term. It's not even not being able to play online; it's the inability to verify digital licenses from PSN to the profile. Basically, even if it's a single player game, you cannot access it because you cannot verify the license for the title.

This future that gaming is approaching is a dark one if this episode is anything to go by. When MS had its outage, I couldn't access my profile or my purchased titles because it requires authentication from an online license.

Would be cool if they make it again with some upgrades that will still play ps2 disc's, but give it a quality upscale and color correction for modern tvs. I can emulate my games no problem, but it would be nice to play with my younger brothers with ease of setup.
They can't even emulate it properly on the PS5, and given how crap the PS Classic was I'd rather they don't bother.

I can play all my games no problem, while you're stuck here seething that your gay console can't play the 5 games it has because, YOU DON'T ACTUALLY OWN THEM, EVEN ON DISC!
Lol
Lmao even.
Not owning your games isn't exclusive to consoles:

You VILL own nothing and you VILL be happy. Unless of course you're a part of the GOG master race.

If you're not buying physical games or pirating then wtf. Companies can take away all of it in no time. If you can't sell it you don't own it.

it'll assume it's not authorized to play the game and won't start it up.
That's too professional. It lets you play five minutes like a nanny, then physically powers down your console.
gog jannies can ban your account making you lose all your games
Do you load up Amazon to talk about politics and how much you hate the fucking troons? Treat GOG like a store, not a community.
I don't even write reviews.

Holy shit we really do own nothing.

Now hold on there bro. There is always an answer to that problem even if its digital...

Granted a lot of vidya cracks after denuvo are hard to find but its always great for backlogging and genuine ownership.

Piracy IS the only meaningful route for preservation and bypassing region locks and game bans. It literally saved a lot of games that'd be lost to the sands of times and leads to fan translations of obscure games that were never localized.

I don’t know why everyone suddenly decided customizable menus were bad
I don't know about Snoy, but on the 3DS custom themes were a great entrypoint for homebrew because it involves a lot of asset decompression which is ripe ground for memory fuckery. On the other hand nobody bought the custom themes they were offering, so it was wasted monetary effort on their part.

I got one for free with Theatrhythm Dragon Quest, and I'm rather fond of it. In retrospect spending $1 or $2 on a theme was reasonable.

Literally the only reason I own any new consoles today.
Same here, except for bing bing wahoo cartridges. It's the only console you can take out of the box, never connect to the internet and it works just fine
If the disc drive goes, my wallet goes
Same here
and I will pledge my full 100% allegiance to the PC master race.
Yes, but the Volvo Jew isn't getting any money from me. Not to mention that there isn't anything worth pirating anymore. I have enough backlog to last me a lifetime

you don't own GOG games either. even your physical game just means you own the MEDIA WITH A LICENSE, not the game. I wish people would understand the difference.

the only thing gog does different is not having DRM (not that they haven't tried and got shit for it), where on steam it depends on the individual dev. not everyone bothers integrating steamworks.

tell that to my darkspore disk

Valve only had to add that shit because of EU and some other regions kind of mandating it or they got hit with some consumer protection lawsuit bullshit. Like their system isn't perfect and besides smaller services, out of all the mainstream ones, Valve/Steam have been the most "True & Honest" and since their company is privately held it means they're far more capable of maintaining their stance on how they have been previously.

Their own games seem to have the most generous offline feature sets but unfortunately they can't control 3rd party publisher releases.

Did anyone notice? I have not turned mine on for about 8 months now. Every game of note is on PC now.
I only noticed because I tried to back up a save to the cloud and it gave me a maintenance message. Last time this happened with PS3 and the retarded leap year bug I'm sure I got some free games out of it so it might not be all bad.

I get what you're saying but it's a distinction without a difference. The first sale doctrine applies to it and thats what matters. If anything we need the first sale doctrine to apply to digital goods

It's probably not only that but also that the way people socialize on the internet has also changed and Discord has become its own behemoth. You can voice chat using Discord on a PS5 but you can't "chat" (by using text) and Discord is the place to congregate with old time friends and find new friends (besides the games themselves).

This method of communication isn't just prevalent among zoomers but even older people because its probably easier and more reliable than using whatever "social" features consoles have (I don't use consoles so I can't say that authoritatively but I am pretty sure its true).

Sony should've prioritized making a more fully featured Discord client and allowed for a wireless keyboard or whatever, or a mini keyboard for the controller like Xbox had ages ago - there are unofficial ones, but Xbox had an official one:

Still though, it can't fully replicate the "PC gamer" experience (like copy/pasting images etc) and I am also guessing that the Steam store is miles above any console online store - there's so much more on offer, all the time.

Literally no one is thinking about "owning the media rights" when discussing game ownership, you tard. 99.9% of people that buy games understand this.

Blatantly false. Every game you purchase on GOG has an offline installer that you can backup to a drive. That's the biggest difference from other game platforms, and by that metric you actually own your digital games bought off there (as long as you back them up in the first place).
