It's not that "Sony abandoned the JRPG", it's the the JRPG noticed that releasing on PC can be a lucrative venture. People really underestimate how much of the market Sony had an ironfist control over purely because the Japanese did not dare release anything on PC till during the second half of the PS4 life cycle. Before that the Nintendo console was either weak or had a small install base so nobody bothered and Microsoft owned the gaijin boxes which which were outright ignored.

People talk about how the PS4 had no exclusives. It had them... till it stopped having them, 2017 was a banger year with Monster Hunter, Nier Automata and Yakuza 0 among the offerings. Turns out a couple of years later those 3 were on PC and except for Square, all other companies were suddenly doing simultaneous releases on PS4 and PC at the same time. And suddenly one of the bastions of Sony which was Japanese games just shattered.
No it was absolutely because Sony both abandoned them but also censored them. Multiple developers, especially the ones who were using Sony's PhyreEngine have talked about it, Falcom, Atelier etc had to go to PC because of both Sony abandoning their engine but also the real risk of just having games banned and sony being autistic about it and not explaining why or even allowing them to resubmit censored versions, like what happened to a few games. Those arent the biggest developers but they're some of the most prolific releasing games every year.
Today marks 25 years since the PS2 hit the scene. What were your favorite PS2 games? Any fond/memorable experiences with the console?
FFX, the last good final fantasy for me
Suikoden 5 finally being a return to form for the series, I didnt think it would be the last proper game at the time, it was so good, it should have rocketed the series to success
Shadow of the Colossus, whose barren empty world was more enjoyable than all the ubisoft collectable filled worlds

I distinctly remember buying the PS2 together with a copy of Resident Evil: Code Veronica X. I loved the RE games on PS1 and this one blew me away with its quality. It was such an worthwhile purchase as that game was massive compared to the previous entries and everything running in full 3D. I still have my fat original PS2 and the copy of the game.

Sky Odyssey was another early title I got and it was ball bustlingly hard because it was a pure flight sim. No hand holding or arcadey stuff, you had to learn how to fly the planes like the real deal, take off and landing included. I lost count of how many times I crashed against canyon walls and underground caverns or suffered the consequences of a botched landing after a long mission. When I finally completed that final mission, after many failures, where you had to make your way to the top of a mountain range in the middle of a violent snow storm in a single-engine propeller aircraft, to finally land on the other side as the weather cleared and the sun shined on that final approach. What a game.

There are so many entries in amazing series I enjoyed:
Jak and Daxter
Sly Cooper
Devil May Cry
God of War
Resident Evil
Silent Hill
Fatal Frame
Ico and Shadow of The Colossus

Just too many to mention. PlayStation 2 and Sixth Gen in general was truly the peak of console gaming.

Still play games of that era whenever the opportunity arises.

Sly series, Ratchet and Clank series, ATV Offroad Fury 1(the rest have shit soundtracks with little metal), Tony Hawk games, Rogue Galaxy, Silent Hill 2-4, Shadow of the Collosus, Drakengard, Devil May Cry 3, SMT Nocturne, Persona 4, Spider Man 2, Final Fantasy 12, Final Fantasy 10, Spongebob Battle for Bikini Bottom, Digital Devil Saga 1-2, Ape Escape 3, Shadow the Hedgehog(no, I am not ashamed of this), Okami, Bully, The Punisher, Dragon Quest 8, Odin Sphere, Chaos Legion, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 1-3, Tak 1-2, Jak 1-3, Psychonauts, Harvest Moon A Wonderful Life's PS2 version, any Sega compilation, Kingdom Hearts 1-2, Rampage Total Destruction, MGS 2-3, and Star Ocean 3.

Shadow the Hedgehog is actually a really fun game if you enjoy stupid edgy nonsense.

boy, that sure was fun, wasn't it? Now back to modern Soyn's retardation:

Over the years, many of you have participated in various beta programs across Sony Interactive, which has helped us deliver the best possible gaming experiences to gamers around the world. And we’re truly grateful for your participation.

That’s why I’m pleased to introduce the Beta Program at PlayStation initiative. It’s an easier, more consolidated way for gamers to sign up to participate in future PlayStation betas across a wide range of PlayStation experiences.

The Beta Program at PlayStation will create an easy, centralized place for you to register your interest in a range of future PlayStation betas. A single registration for Beta Program at PlayStation will allow you to express interest in gaining beta access to test participating games for the PS5 console and PC, new PS5 console features, PlayStation App features, and even user experience features on PlayStation.com. You only need to sign up once to express interest in these various betas, and if you receive an invitation to a specific beta, it’s up to you to decide whether you’d like to participate or not.

Here are the requirements:

  • Players must have a valid account for PlayStation Network in good standing with a current email address. Accounts with restrictions or violations may not be eligible for participation.
  • Players must live in the region where Beta Program at PlayStation is available.
  • Players must meet the legal age requirement for their region.

The Xbox was just a $300 Halo machine, no one would've bought it if it didn't have that.
It had dozens and dozens of small, almost-unknown games that pushed genres and redefined boundaries. Microsoft may be a shit-stain on the industry, but during the OG Xbox days they pumped out some incredible gaming experiences.

And despite the hype, OG Halo lived up to it, and beyond. 2 player co-op campaign, the clever AI in solo mode and the 4 player party mode were incredible.

Xbox was still the gloried Halo box. I had all three consoles back then and most of the friends I had back then only had a PS2 so whenever they came over they always wanted to play Halo, no one ever wanted to play Ninja Gaiden or Project Gotham Racing.

My point still stands that Xbox would have flopped if it didn't have Halo.

The PS2 was for fags and wiggas. Dreamcast and Xbox were the consoles of gamers.

Gamers play games, not consoles. I owned all Sixth gen consoles because there are good games to play on all of them. After sixth gen I switched to PC because I realized all games, one way or another, find their way there.

I also seem to recall a lot of games running INFINITELY better on the Xbox compared to the PS2 versions.
