I've re-read my post, I don't know why I said it had an SSD when it didn't. I think I was meant to say it should have had one. It did have a different GPU, motherboard, RAM and (IIRC) CPU though. I took my X1X apart to swap out the HDD with a bigger/faster one and was surprised about how well it was put together.
Anyway, they should have launched the X1X as a new generation.

If Microsoft was smarter (Lord knows, I wish they were), they could've marketed the Series S as the 1080p system that was meant for the wider audience, and the Series X as the "Pro" model meant for the fanboys of the brand. They could've added in a disc drive to the Series S and just made it look like a more updated One S. I mean, there ARE ways they could've fixed this marketing and have not chosen to die on the hill of "OMG EVERY SYSTEM WE MAKE WILL BE 4K!". Not every gamer likes to play at 4k. Not every game NEEDS 4k. It's fucking retarded. There was a way they could've saved this generation without getting needlessly complicated in their initial messaging and confusing the fuck out of parents who just wanted a game box to keep their kids occupied.

If the XSS launched without the XSX - to avoid confusion, as the 1080p machine, with a disc drive, basically an update X1X, they could have sold them for £249 or £299, cutting the legs off of the £449 launch price of the PS5, which was out of stock for nearly 12 months, then Microsoft would have swept up.
They could have launched the XSX after 2 years, offering an upgrade to their fans and allowing for a better price.

I would have made Microsoft billions of dollars if I had Phil Spencers job and Sony would have had to sell Playstation to keep afloat. I wouldn't be putting my (Xbox) games on Playstation, they would be selling me their brands.

I agree they should have, but your two statements are contradictory.
They could not launch the Series S as a standalone new generation after releasing a 4K focused upgrade to Xbox One. The lack of a disc drive is boneheaded but a lot of the chatter I hear is with regard to the Series S being worse than the One X. If they focused on not caring about 4K they could have launched Series S with a disc drive and maybe an extra few gb of RAM and absolutely demolished Sony this time around.
4K was a almost worthless upgrade and a stupid hill to die on.

The One X is better than the Series S in everything but CPU, as the XSS is clocked higher. That’s why the XSS exists. The fact that the GPU of the Series S is slower than the One X is insane to me.
Honestly though, if the XSS had a disc drive I’d buy it. How does Microsoft fuck up so bad.

Th X1X had the gimmick of 4k. It ran some games in 4k, but the upgrade was more improve on the absolutely dog shit X1, its 3 OS's due to kinect and to remove Kinect ports/support.
4K should not be on consoles. It should be kept on PC like the most graphic intensive games used to be.
It was crazy to see the 1X run games better than the XSS at launch, and I can only think it's because MS pushed feature parity with the XSX. If they hadn't have dual launched and focuses on one console, there would be no need for feature parity, no reason to push 4k and could have launched a cheap, yet reasonably powerful console. Just like they did with the Xbox 360, except the upgrade would have been an SSD instead of multi-core GPU.
It's funny, because pushing an SSD to the console crowd "Look! no more load times!" in a 1080p machine would have been a much easier sell to casuals than "image a little bit more sharp" that 4k is.
Hell, you could have probably repackaged the 1x with an SSD and sold it for £199 and decimated Sony in a month.

it's a necessary buzzword for normalfags (and execs) to sell units. intel was already talking about 12k years ago because bigger number = better. you really underestimate how technically illiterate the average normalfag is. I mean there's a reason they buy a console instead simply a PC...
another problem however that consoles have and will for some time is the "ready to play" aspect and that the game needs to look like in the bullshots.
on PC no ones cares if you can't run 4k with raytracing at 144hz like the trailer, you'll just reduce settings till you hit your acceptable sweetspot. on console you'll be lucky to get "AA on/off", you're literally not supposed to change anything even if you could.

At the same time, Sony has dormant game franchises that have been sitting on the shelves for fucking decades. Instead of bitching about Microsoft buying "Call of Duty", dust off SOCOM, and directly compete. Dust off Twisted Metal and start a new car combat craze (from what I hear, the TV series is doing decent enough numbers). Dust of Syphon Filter or Warhawk.
Sony pisses me off because they bitch about everyone else instead of looking at what they HAVE.

Seriously though, the handhelds when plugged into a TV can handle 1080p decently enough at this point. Beef a handheld up and remove the portability and there you go for a 1080p machine.

Normalfags couldn't tell the difference between a DVD and Blu Ray. They looked the same, oh a bit sharper but 3x the price no thanks.
Normalfags bought the Wii in 2009.
They don't care about these things.
It is ridiculous to me that console makers now boast about unnoticeable differences across generations and include graphical options in fucking console games, including Nintendo now. What were they thinking? They deserve a hard crash.

There should be no graphics options on console. Make the game one way, that's how we play it. Want more resolution? Buy a PC. want more FPS? Buy a PC. PC gaming should be more expensive because of the hardware, but cheaper software. Consoles should be cheap hardware and expensive software.

Even on PC, the majority of users are sitting in the 2K resolution range. These are the March resolution stats on Steam.
The push for higher and higher resolutions while simultaneously developing SKUs of games for hardware that isn't capable of supporting it stifles modern game development, especially in large studios. It seems like it's damn near impossible to release games across this generation and the previous without major performance issues and compromises.

The only bonus of this is that the big three have backed themselves into a corner and, with the exception of Nintendo, have to choose between expensive hardware no-one will, or can, buy or taking a bath on the cost of the next gen, which they won't do. Either choice leads to a crash.
