Sopranos is still the best TV show ever: Appreciation Thread - or maybe the wire

I can't believe that Sabrina Carpenter decided to rip off ~our girl~ and didn't even admit her inspiration

The Sopranos cast trying out Guitar Hero III at a Neversoft hotel room launch party.

So I finally finished the series a few days and… I didn’t remember how much filler there was in Seasons 5 and 6. I found myself fast-forwarding through a lot of scenes (mostly Carmela, kids, or Melfi related).

The kids were always the weakest aspect of the show. Some of the dream sequences in the latter series were often more filler than not. Compare it to the episode where Tony came to terms with Big Pussy being a rat in season two with whatever the fuck they were thinking with that missing wallet dream sequence. Reminds me a lot of the last season of Better Call Saul where Kim and her husband were talking about Miracle Whip for several minutes. I get it but both instances were flops.

EmpLemon video about the ending.

i never believed the shit about "i uhhh walked into a diner and thought tony should get shot dead here," it was such cope. what it really was, was the fact that gandolfini died and they couldn't do anything more with the sopranos. that last scene was an open door for a future series, it's saying that life keeps going. tony beat his foes, he's lost some friends, silvio might not be waking up (or, "steven van zandt may not come back to keep playing him"), but even though it's all over he's in the same place. someone's testifying against tony, it's another battle for him to fight. whatever, he's still hopeful, thats why he played don't stop believing. he looks up before the camera cuts to black because he's still paranoid that he's got it coming. that's just what life is for him. no more panic attacks. this shit about the guy with the member's only jacket, as if the happenstance of that guy being there means anything. you look at every time someone bites the dust in the show, it's one of two things: a planned murder (meaning you have to know he's going to be at that restaurant), or a heat of the moment thing (think fat dom). total hack shit to say that it really was just "guy shows up and shoots tony" and expect anyone to take it seriously

Thank god this already exists. I rewatched The Sopranos and The Wire in the past couple of months, and i'll say: i'm a Sopranos guy through and through, but i must admit that The Wire has better writting. Sopranos is so much more entertaining to watch, but The Wire is better overall.
Thanks for your attention.

But when you consider how "you probably don't even hear it when it happens" is echoed, and also a much earlier part where Chris momentarily dies, "goes" to the afterlife and God (or the devil, I forget) tells him to warn Tony: 3 O'clock, the direction the members only guy and the bathroom were relative to Tony when he  might have died.

It was obviously meant it to be open to interpretation, but there's too many small things that altogether very strongly suggest he was killed. It's even set up similarly to other prominent death scenes in the later seasons. An upbeat rock song is playing, the guy is in public not fully paying attention to his surroundings (Tony tried, but AJ distracted him from jacket, entering at the same time), the camera is constantly switching between POV shots showing exactly what Tony sees and more importantly what he misses. It's almost a parallel to Phil's death (assuming Tony did indeed die).

That's not to mention also, just logically, Tony has no friends left at that point, just like Phil after Butch turned on him. It really feels in the last few episodes that the rest of the mobsters were becoming disillusioned, entering a "let's just cut our losses and get back to business" phase, so it was decided that both Phil and Tony need to go, but you are of course only made aware of the plan on Phil. Watch Tony's last meeting with Paulie outside Satriale's and consider the idea that Paulie is already aware Tony is going to be clipped soon, in fact he's more than likely in on it.

Either Tony gets popped mid-onion ring or the walls close in on him and he ends up in a jail cell for the rest of his life. It's the end of the line for Tony Soprano.

I think Butch had Tony killed and will roll in and absorb what's left of the De Meo crew. Patsy and Paulie each had reasons to kill Tony and may or may not have been working with Butch to kill Tony, but Butch would have been the big winner after Tony has died. We also can't discount a hit already in motion by Phil that was never cancelled on account of Phil getting popped himself. Either way, plenty of people have motiviation to kill Tony and I think that's what those last few seconds of the show represent: Tony's fate from Tony's POV. He looks up to see Meadow coming in and it all goes black and quiet because he got a bullet to the back of the head by Member's Only Jacket guy.

I don’t know why people associate The Wire with The Sopranos.

The Sopranos and The Shield are the patrician’s combo. The Wire is faggy bullshit with one great season, one good one, one not so bad, and the rest fucking blows with shining spots.

i fucking love the shield badass show with a killer ending

My favorite episode has got to be Commendatori. Mostly cause I'm a HUGE Furio fan. He's a total badass and probably the only real gangster in the DiMeo crew. Plus it's some great tracks like Certamente. Honorable mention: Con Te Partiro.

The episode also tells the DiMeo crew the uncomfortable truth they won't (or can't) square with: they're not real mobsters. They're a fish out of water in Italy.

Also shoutout to the commenter in that video saying "I love the sopranos so much. I wish Italian people were real" lmfao

To be fair, it's an entirely different environment for the mob in Sicily than it is in NYC. They'll go after judges and the police and kill civilians and not think twice in Italy but the mob in America built in rules that say they can't do any of those things here simply because Lucky Luciano realized if they did business as usual like they did in Italy the American authorities would go after them with no restraint either. There would be no mob. Plus, there was so much more money to be had in America between Prohibition and then owning unions and legit business stuff there is no point in keeping the street level stuff as their main priority like it is in Italy.

But the highlight is watching someone like Paulie just keep stepping on his own dick the entire episode.

Mmmn, true dat, I can concede.

What is also emphasized is the culture shock the Jersey boys feel when in the motherland. They go on and on throughout the series about being proud Italians, but when they go to Italy, they are essentially disrespected and sneak-dissed most of the time. Even when people like Furio are smiling at simpletons like Paulie, if you read between the lines you know they're thinking "these American idiots are impressed by anything."

Paulie Commendatori! like a commander! that's respect!
Furio: this guy's an idiot lmao

Tony: me despiacce, Nino. I meant no disrespect.
Nino (in italian): fuck off

Paulie: ...can I just get some macaroni and gravy?
Italian dude: Americans are such uncultured assholes.

Many such cases.

Paulie when back in America: I felt right at home!
