Gus was the name of Al Jolson's blackface character, who had the most popular minstrel act since Stephen Foster was writing for E.P. Christy's group about 50 years before Jolson began appearing in blackface on stage in 1904.

After the Salt Mine folded I thought about changing it ("Rage Candy Bar" was my top contender since it kind of had the same feel, same juxtaposition of sweets and angry lolcows, plus a cute Pokémon reference), but I decided I was too tied to the Taffy name to change it at that point.
