Gus was the name of Al Jolson's blackface character, who had the most popular minstrel act since Stephen Foster was writing for E.P. Christy's group about 50 years before Jolson began appearing in blackface on stage in 1904.
Only part of The Jolson Story where the man himself appears on-screen. He was in his sixties when it was filmed, so he had to dub over another performer in the other scenes. This is the best example of what he would do during the height of his career just after WWI.
