Space Station 13 and Its successors communities - Lolcows and milk... In spess

The only really important thing about /vg/station is that, no matter how bad shitmins are (and they've been abhorrently shit for quite a while) or retarded their internal drama gets, their game server is... actually doing just fine. Unlike TG that got shit primarily because the troons subverted the codebase itself, resulting in slow exodus of oldfags, /vg/'s coders are almost all the same faces as they used to be, say, 5 years ago. I hop on there from time to time and playing there feels just as much of a blast as it always used to be. You can literally forget about the existence of the OOC stuff like shitcord and /vm/ thread and just enjoy the classic SS13 experience that gets ~20-40 people a day depending on what day it is. Like @Jotch once said, that server stood up the best to the tranny menace.

So yeah, I disagree with all the "/vg/ is dead!!1" claims because the game server is doing okay and it's literally the only thing that matters.
>/vg/'s coders are almost all the same faces as they used to be, say, 5 years ago
Total bullshit. You need only look on their kikehub. Out of old faces (5+ years old), only the following have commited anything in the past year: d3athrow (the host), DeityLink, Kurfursten, ShiftyRail, SonixApache, boy2mantwicethefam, Exxion. Out of nearly a hundred contributors. And even of those, most are singular commits as opposed to the hundreds of commits yearly five years prior.
It's a shambling corpse of a server which has completely cycled through their own userbase at least twice. More importantly, they now leave the server up on the Hub, and it's safe to assume the majority of the pop comes from there now. The oldfags are all gone.
>20-40 people
I have no idea what server you're actually playing on, because currently I see 2 people online. And that's the case for all but unscheduled peak times.

In the wake of the great staff exodus a new SS14 maintainer just dropped and immediately came out as plural. This received an exclusively positive reaction as no chud wants to get banned for pluralphobia. They went from zero (0) plural systems in 2023 to, a little over a year later, 10+ across the English server admins and coders. This isn't really notable as an individual event but rather illustrative of the latest retard social contagion. Remember the project also went from like 15% to 70%+ trans in upper echelons within 3 years.

SS14 is literally unity troon slop. Fuck that whole game god damn.

I'm glad somebody had the motivation to create this thread. I'm too bitchmade to make a stab at an OP so I appreciate that someone did it. We've needed a place to dump everything that happens in general. Individual servers and codebases are too niche to create enough lolcows to warrant having their own threads so a lot of SS13 stuff has flown under the radar.

A good candidate for the OP would be all the info about MrStonedOne/Kyle Spier-Swanson in the one of the other SS13 threads. MSO was the previous host of /tg/ that stepped down because he built a reputation for bringing up Men's Rights constantly. He had this pattern of jumping in to an unrelated conversation and bringing up politics, so he can bait an excuse to regurgitate papers and statistics he cherrypicked that back up his favorite talking points. When people try to refute him or tell him to fuck off, he gets indignant, calls people misandrists, brings up how he was raped by a woman, and locks the thread or bans them from Discord.
He also turns out to be scum that likes to roleplay raping women and ageplay, big surprise there.

Also "The Wallening" that happened to /tg/ late last year is a notable event that caused a lot of butthurt towards the sensitive tranny coders. The servers took such a hit to the player population that they had to get rid of servers that nobody was playing on. There's been this lingering resentment of the staff that has existed ever since that the staff is still trying to quell. A large part of /tg/s regular players went to Monkestation over this, and haven't returned. Here's the long ass forum thread where they infight over it for 2 months

The primary perpetrators of this was shit tranny coders like Mothblocks and their sycophant friends like Oranges (optimumtact), Lemoninthedark (thefinalpotato), and MrStonedOne mentioned above. They fell for the sunk cost fallacy that they could fix it before it did irreparable harm, but failed and had to throw away years of work over their mismanagement of the situation.

You can browse /tg/'s forums without logging in to see basically their entire history of drama recorded for us if you feel like delving in to a community. Others also have forums, but not any that stretch nearly as far back as /tg/'s. There is a long legacy of insane people that have caused problems for the community. Personally, I like reading ban appeals and ban reasons. There are some real gems in there.

and the unlisted "Player's Club" subforum that they use to talk about drama is also a great source of happenings in /tg/.

First of all, contributors page is really not an indicator of anything as it's sorted by the amount of contributions and thus an absolute majority of people actually shown there are history. People moving on and others taking their place is normal and only leads to cultural shift if said culture is not upheld by the oldfags that stuck around (which it was on /vg/).
Second of all, you are just wrong and I could already find more people than that contributing in 2024 by quickly skimming through that list (examples 1, 2, 3). There are definetly a lot of active coders, or at least enough for a server/codebase of their size.
Third of all, you didn't take into account the quality of coders itself. You can't just read through their github and accuse any one of them of trannyfying/ruining the codebase like with TG. Even the bad PRs that rarely do appear either get filtered (all the bad faith PRs made by a french faggot admin ShiftyRail), modified post-merge (Dorms plushie vendor PR fixes 1, 2) or, at absolute worst, reverted (Europalights that made the server unplayable for a whole month). Also a great deal of contributions comes from randoms or insignificant coders because that's how open source works.
Fourth of all, no really game-changing shit that would've made the server unrecognisable from itself just several years prior ever occured. Gamemodes changed, some balancing changed, a lot of various cool mechanics got added but nothing that would've lead to complete loss of identity like TG's over 9000 different respritings and UI changes, rebalancings, total deletions/replacements of recognisable game elements, etc. The server changed, but kept its soul.
It's a shambling corpse of a server which has completely cycled through their own userbase at least twice.
The oldfags are all gone.

We too keep the server on the hub and it's not at all a problem. Gatekeeping is important, but so is preventing things from getting stale. You need to balance these things out. I'd say for now it's working out just as good for us as it is for them - majority of the players are actually regulars, with a few curious pubbies stumbling into the server and maybe sticking around.
>20-40 people

Just because they only play in a timeframe of ~4-10 PM EST doesn't mean their server is dEaD!!1 Riviera only launching once per week is not a sign of it being a dead server, it's just a sign of a smaller population that's not enough to keep the server packed 24/7. Now, whether or not that's due to things outside of staff's control or not really depends, but I'd say it's mostly due to the former. It's not /vg/station shitmins' fault that 4chan has gotten so cancerous and unusable that /ss13g/ thread can't exist on a /vg/ board anymore, just like it's not gecko's fault that Null threw in the towel with SS13 a while ago and doesn't stream it.
And it's most definetly NOT theirs or ours fault that, despite "SS13" entry on BYOND hub having a playercount as big as ever, the number of people actually playing Space Station 13 and not ERPing/playing SS13-based offshoots has undoubtedly plummeted through the bottom.

I was good aquaintance with mothblocks and lemon for a time, genuinely clever and kind people then. They helped get me into DM coding.
Oranges is also a really smart and very well spoken dude. Get in a voice call with him and he can explain anything to anyone in 15 mins or less.
It is a genuine shame they are all now degenerates or suffer from Ralph Syndrome.

I remember seeing Mothblocks presenting on an OSS conference and feeling dread for FOSS in general.
Watching him troon out really hurt me.

The /vg/ codebase is notoriously poorly documented and crusty so its no wonder you don't see a ton of changes like before. The best advice you'll get is to code and pray for the most part.
The hub has done jack shit for /vg/, maybe a tourist here or there, but they never stick.
Consequently there's rarely any new blood and that has resulted in the recurring playerbase getting older, which is why you only see pop around the time people get off work.
Really, its not a big shock that they want to look into ss14 and the like because unless byond suddenly gets another player boost they don't really have the means to entice anybody but old players to come back.

in addition to occasionally threatening suicide and taking the server down
Or, it could, if it wasn't kept on permanent lifesupport by the host
Forgot to quote this earlier because I'm retarded but iirc the most recent (at least on the chans) threat pomf has made to take himself and the server off life support was back in early April of last year. He's a selfish nigger for not actually pulling the trigger for once

I think that was one of the pitfalls of /tg/. There are a lot of really talented and smart people working on the project, but everyone is too friendly with each other to actually tell someone their idea sucks. I think Oranges is the only person that actually would do that. He was the only one that pushed back against adding more furry races after all. I think he's stepping back and allowing the trannies to take over, because he's sick of constantly being the face of what is wrong with /tg/ and eating shit for it, maybe he's just a tranny chaser.

Either way, they sit around in their IRC and Discords all day talking to each other and now they're all besties that never have any bad ideas, working on something solely for themselves. Constantly asspatting each other over the new thing they ripped off from another game, or a change that makes the game objectively less fun for "balance", because it makes them feel like real game developers. It created this insular club full of people that think they are the only ones worthy of deciding what is good for /tg/. Unless you're in that group, you may as well not have any input at all. You can tell how the coders will literally flock to defend each other when one of their choices comes under fire. Any PR that changes something they or their friends made may as well be a direct insult to their game design prowess and sheer mastery of DM. The coder monolith has gotten so bad, that they will often speak for each other as well, because that's just how intertwined they are.

It always used to be like that tho, even back in the day of #coderbus. They were all friends, the only difference was they didn't mind calling eachother faggots and niggers because they were all from 4chan or adopted the culture.

The downfall really was adding to the hub along with the more popularity it got. Actually no fuck we could spend days arguing when the fall was really, SoS being replaced by MSO (a literal redditor), the errorage drama, the oldguard just getting old and being replaced by literal retards.

I should try to add that some of the ERP servers like Splurt (Ran by Mos_ley, a fat panamanian zoophile/pedophile scat fetishist hwo was interestingly enough a former deep ifunnier) and Hyper station (Closed down now but was formerly run by furry cuck artist QouteFox) Would be good additions, especially as Splurt has it's own history of retardation.

There is also an "apology" thread made by the owner of Splurt talking about "past actions". EDIT: It appears to have been deleted for unknown reasons, likely the owner getting too much flak or something behind closed doors.

"Uhm I was isolated during le pandemic and got better" Is such bullshit as last I heard an actual honest to god woman is upholding the entire server and all he does is pay the bills and does rape RP. That and refusing to change the "Mosley" name is indicative he does not really mean this beyond needing more sexual partners.

There is also a video about the general SS13 furry community that has a short section about splurt, but it is an interesting watch to get an idea about it

Not much is out there regarding Hyper Station (upon a cursory glance) although I have heard of some things word of mouth. A good amount of SS13 information seems to usually become lost in discord DMs or some other private messaging service.

Excuse me, Bay would like to have a word with you.

The only server that survived this properly might have been goonstation. But that's only because I can't find like 200+ page forum meltdown over Trump and getting several admins yeeted because supporting no immigration to Sweden = Alt-right huwite male and they went out of their way to dox and then contact said admin's workplace and friends to say LITERALLY HITLER!!!! and try and get him arrested for inciting ethnic hatred.

Have you seen his recent profile picture (see the DMCA pics), it's le ebin tomboy wunderwoman (Fuck MSO for doing that to engineering, go to medical and yiff with furfags) that they all post before trooning out. Clock's ticking on this and I can't wait for MSO to do it.
