Left one still has the dog-ass ugly center windows, later mentioned pillow-shaded talbes and arguably too new APC sprites (which are still leagues better than nuTG APCs) which separates it from perfection. And the turd-tube wrapping paper. It's also extremely not r4407, just old ~2012ish /tg/. Many of the problems with the nuTG sprites are that they are too low-contrast, lacking outlines and compounded with the presence of the bafflingly ugly ambient occlusion effect, which is missing from the screenshot. You could find a newer, more representative one from before the wallening, although many of the sprites already exhibit perspective for no reason whatsoever.

I think that 13 year old APC sprites are not too new at this point, and in my mind they are just more iconic than the r4407. I close my eyes, think of an APC, and I think those ones, not the 0 detail ones from r4407.

R4407 is 15 years old, wouldn't it have a lot fewer game modes at this point?
Seems like it would be easier to take a more current version of tgstation and revert changes than to build up again from R4407. Though rebuilding from R4407 seems to be riviera station's approach.

R4407 is the 2010 version, geckogoy is using 2015 Bay station Luna. OG r4407 is even more barebones compared to Luna
As for using modern TG code you have to remember how much shitty balance, grudge code, awful features, and troon filth that would need to be stripped out. It honestly would be easier to use an older codebase.

You would have to ask @geckogoy but I can easily imagine why. All modern TG codebases are unbelievably ass, Paradise was ahead of the curve on the baked in furfaggotry and gay nigger shit, apparently Bay station monkeyed their code completely since 2015. Most total conversion codebases like lifeweb usually base their code off of Luna, he probably wanted a blank slate and a coders sandbox to work with instead of rehashing another servers code
 
Problem with Luna is that it has a ton of old code, years worth of server destroying exploits. There is a lot of old shitcode from amateur coders that hasn't been cleaned up and refactored, and it's still using the old MC which is shit based on today's SS13 standards (retro lag). That's the only thing stopping people from actually using it.

A few people have tried to make servers and faced this issue.

What's MC again? Also over a year of operations @geckogoy managed to single-handedly make the old shitcode not just playable but also unique and enjoyable, props to him for that. Though yeah, some exploits still exist like a way to bypass bombcap that @tinnit recently discovered and I suspect also [REDACTED].

"MC" means Master Controller. Luna doesn't use a Master Controller, it uses the Goon Process Scheduler. Yes, I'm a pedant, sue me. They are softcode schedulers meant to replace or work around BYOND's proc scheduler to reduce lag.

There is someone that has been de-shittifying TG for a while now, sadly I don't remember who or the codebase.
 
Its actually AGPL bay in terms of that one guys flowchart, but a really early version. Its new enough stuff needed to be ripped out and replaced, but old enough that it has a lot of older stuff I still like. IMO performance is more or less indistinguishable from places like VG at this point and any issues are either euros (who we are never going to relocate out of the US for) or people using really bad VPNs.

sources: performance was kindof bad so a rather large amount of effort was invested into fixing it and it feels about the same to me now

It was really funny actually I was listening to one of the mappers who was streaming in discord during their mapping and they had an absolute melty because one of the users accidentally misgendered them lol lmao.

Shame I wasted time contributing there for it to become basically lizard avians being cringe and people ruining moffs.

There was one player who autistically roleplayed a disabled robot in a wheelchair all the time which was an experience.
