The most puzzling part of it is the whole format: it's Marvel going back to a franchise-wide crossover that runs through every single book in the mutant line, which is something the big two quit doing 20 years ago, because everyone hated it. Readers hated it because it was a hassle to follow the plot through random issues of several series, and because there was never consistent quality control or continuity of storytelling. Which, shocking, is the exact problem with X of Swords. And creators hated it because they had to drop their ongoing storylines to do the crossover. It's why Peter David quit X-Factor in a giant huff lo those many years ago.

Bits and pieces of it are fun, mainly when they grab the basic lunacy of the story and run with it for laughs. Marauders #14 or #15 is just a bunch of people talking shit and playing parlor games at a dinner party, and it's hilarious. The Hellions issue people called out is good, like an incredibly violent dysfunctional family sitcom. But I've read the whole thing up to this point and if you tried to quiz me on any kind of sequence of events, or what the point of it all is supposed to be, I'd flunk.

at this point, I think they're trying to artificially push the new mutant status quo as this krakoan unity thing.

It feels like the next step up after Utopia tbf.

The swords thing could be fun but it's not written too well.

Tom King is a B list writer with an A list ego. His Vision run was fun but man he can't write A list characters that well. I liked him better as a B lister character writer.

Brevoort telling him off is kinda funny ngl.

Batman's pretty much the most marketable of DC's heroes. Dude's got more movies, tv series, cartoons, and video games than i have hair in my pubes.

kinda wish DC would just get a good and solid fantasy writer to help push Wonder Woman. She hasn't had a good writer since Perez/Wolfman iirc.
 
So what do you guys think about the new DC layoffs/firings?

Seems more and more likely the Direct Market's turbo super fucked.

I dunno. People have been saying the direct market's dead any day now for more than 25 years. It's destined to croak in the mid to long term, because diabetes and heart disease are eventually gonna claim old comics readers faster than the industry can convince young people that buying a 22-page floppy comic for four dollars isn't a stupid idea. But that'll take a while yet.

The main thing I wonder is whether DC realizes, "wow, this national distribution thing is hard actually" and runs back to Diamond. I figure it's either that or Warner decides the print comics operation is more embarrassment than it's worth and Old Yellers the whole thing.

Pretty much the entire direct market team getting shit canned though probably isn't a good sign but who knows?
 
honestly I'd be all in for the Big 2 to just put out print issues of their AAA levels characters and big team books/event issues printed and have the experimental books and B/C list characters just stick to online editions with compilation collections as printed books.

imo Three Jokers isn't as bad or as mediocre as people say it is.

Greg Rucka and Gail Simone. Yes I will gladly die on this hill but I find their work up there with Perez and Wolfman.

Yeah, but on the other hand DC's (and Marvel's) approach to direct market has been kinda shit so, in theory, if you actually want to fix it then you should probably fire guys that are not delivering.

For example there have been some doom and gloom about DC going down to 10-15 monthlies and I'm not convinced that it would be a bad thing. It is not like any publisher has ever managed to deliver 20+ good issues in a month so might as well cull the garbage since there probably aren't even enough talent available to deliver 20 good issues a month.

Like The Question, Strange Adventures, Miracle Man and Booster Gold minis, which were all about middle aged men being pushed around by their cunty wives/girlfriends?

Tom King is a man with one story that he just tells over and over and over again.

Honestly as long as DC keeps putting out Batman and Wonder Woman books I don't give a fuck if the line gets cut down to size.

Yeah but does AT&T give a shit? We do know they see DC as a brand as important but you don't need to keep printing floppies to sell Batman merchandise.

Well like I said before if DC keeps putting out Batman and Wonder Woman I'll be satisfied.

Plus I've been saying for awhile DC and Marvel need to trim the fat and stick to shit that sells and possibly move back to mass retail.

They shouldn't entirely abandon the Direct Market but I don't see how keeping your product exclusive to dying hobbyist stores is a good idea.

Noone was going to buy the 2020 New Warriors outside of direct market weenies who go for that stuff.

People will absolutely buy the big names like the Bat-family books, big name Team books, Spidey books, etc.

didn't like that tom king made barda and alea strange to be cunty, but eh.

doesn't matter since he hasn't written anything majorly important outside of batman.

yeah dc should just bring back anthology books with like 2-4 serialized stories per book with 2-4 leads.

If I'm not mistaken Walmart books had one new story and bunch of reprints. And are they still a thing or did they get axed at some point?

Just looked it up, yeah they got replaced by 4 packs back in August-September.

And speaking of DC I took a look through their digital first titles and noticed they are selling them for only 99 cents a "book".

Why the fuck can't they do this with their print titles? Is taking this shit to a printer that expensive? If DC and Marvel slashed prices and trimmed their output down they probably wouldn't be in a tail spin now.
