Spider-Man: Far From Home

C'mon bro. Most of Spider-Man's rogues gallery are hoods and bankrobbers. They're not world-class villains, no, but they're not jokes either. It really a detriment to the character that so many of Spider-Man's villains have been turned into scheming puppetmasters over the years (Mysterio, Chameleon, Dr. Octopus, Green Goblin, etc.).
A hood or a bankrobber is a perfectly fine villain, as long as their story's interesting. Toomes was a low-level weapons dealer, and he worked in the last movie because his story arc was strong.

The threat Mysterio posed was incidental in his quality as a villain compared to the quality of the story. Curt Connors, Harry Osbourne, and Electro were all trying to kill even more people and cause even more damage in ASM2 than Mysterio did in Far From Home; and nobody cared, because they all sucked.

That scene where Mysterio was fucking with Peter's head with all the different illusions, including having a Zombie Iron Man crawl towards him was something else. Goddamn.
That shit legit disturbed me at first. I really didn't expect them to go there.

Honestly out of those two only Dr. Octopus and Green Goblin would be fitting of puppet masters considering who they are.

I would just love to see more Spiderman films where the villains are just regular thugs like with what Homecoming did with Vulture.

Kraven wasn't a regular thug and that was a superb story.

To be fair it's the exception that proves the rule tho.

Also Venom Carnage generic symbiote shit.

I liked it.

I have to wonder though, why are they always so keen on making Spider-Man high school age in a lot of the media? The oldest I can remember him being portrayed as is college age/early 20s max. Granted, I’m not a dedicated watcher of every Spidey related media.

The comics themselves iirc generally have him at a much older age..

^Writers and producers at Marvel Comics think he's more appealing to kids as a teen than an adult, plus, with Disney around, that means more products to sell to little kids, so it's a plus.

Which is really weird. Going by the comics themselves, most of the good Spiderman stories were when he was already a young adult. I think the origin story is the only one I'd say stands out when he was a teen.

From a writing standpoint, it's engaging watching a young and inexperienced Spider-Man take on things that at that point would be way over his head. It's the tried and true underdog story. (Well it was engaging the first couple times anyway).

From a marketing standpoint, it also attracts kids and teenagers who can relate to someone close to their age.

Still, I would appreciate seeing more movies centering around an older Spider-Man who has to take on adult responsibilities alongside being a superhero.

We got to see that a bit in Spider-Verse at least, even though that movie ultimately centered around Miles.

I just want Spider-Man to stop being eternally damned to be a teenager.

I grew up on the 90s cartoon and Raimi films which either featured an adult Spider-Man or showed him growing up.

I'm also not a fan of the whole Tony Stark dynamic either, Homecoming pissed me off with how reliant they made Peter on Stark.

I mean fuck if you wanted a younger Peter to get mentored by a hero why not use DareDevil since the two have a history of being friends in the comics and DD is a street level hero who uses acrobatic martial arts and enhanced senses like Spidey?

I don't watch movies in theaters anymore, how did they solve the plotpoint of it being years since Infinity War so anyone who survived the snap would be older than Peter?

By having all the sidecharacters get snapped with him, although the years difference is noted several times in the movie.

Most of his friends were snapped as well and as for everyone older than him, they just hand waved it away as they just kept living their lives so nothing changed too much outside of the initial shock and the (largely) resolved trauma.

Yeah, that would be extremely awkward so I figured they would ignore it completely. Honestly Endgame really should have been a reset button, even if people still died. There's no way they're going to keep up this huge plotpoint of some people in the world being behind five years if they're already largely dropping it in Far from Home by having every one of Peter's friends be snapped with him, which is quite the statistical improbability.

Then again, it's capeshit.

Whatever happened to Michelle not "really" being MJ and she might still be introduced? Did they dunk that in the trash and Michelle is Peter's actual love interest?

I thought Flash becoming a wannabe Instagram influencer douche was pretty funny. It's a shame most of the side characters besides MJ and sometimes Ned are reduced to comic relief to make way for Peter's relationship with the MCU characters, though. I think that's widely agreed on as one of the biggest flaws of these movies (besides being yet another high school Spider Man depiction). @StarkRavingMad pointed out how they seemed to want to replace Uncle Ben, I can hardly imagine how he'd be in the MCU besides them trying to put a comedic spin on him.

They doubled down, i'm 99% sure she is always referred as MJ everytime she is talked to or mentioned. One thing i'm sad is Marvel and Sony might not renew whatever thing that allow Marvel to use Spider-Man because right now now it's going to be tough to top Tom Holland as the new face of the MCU

Blame Sony for the lack of Uncle Ben because IIRC in this thread, Sony made sure to not let the MCU bring up Uncle Ben in the movies because Sony is delusional to believe they'll still have a Spiderman cinematic universe

The same goes for Mary Jane, the Osborns, an accurate Aunt May, Gwen Stacy...I think Disney wanted a traditional Spider-Man adaptation but Sony buttfucked them with their rules and their insistence of their own Spider-Man universe. So Disney had to go and do the next best thing.
