Spider-Man into the Spiderverse

This movie's Miles (and I've heard similar things about his PS4 counterpart) is how you do a "race/gender bent" hero right, give them flaws, don't artificially force them upon us as a replacement of the original, remember to show respect to the original, give them their own unique backstory that makes them an individual, and most importantly: MAKE. THEM. LIKABLE

There was a Female Doctor Octopus in the 90's comics after Kaine killed Otto and becore she died just after she brought the original to life

I had completely forgotten about Lady Octopus until now, haha.

This is a different female Doc Ock in this movie, though. Instead of being Octavius' protégé of some sorts, she is THE Dr. Octavius in the Miles Morales dimension. She goes by Olivia Octavius in the movie, to be specific. Either way, great way to pay homage to the comics while making it a surprise! The movie did a great job with it.

I never hated Miles Morales or anything (especially considering he replaced a version of Peter Parker-- Ultimate Spider-Man-- that I dislike) ... But I was always weary of the idea of there being more than one Spider-Man. I've always viewed Spider-Man as this "regular kid that just so happened to win the bad luck lottery/got struck by lightning." To me, Spider-Man is a much more compelling character knowing that ONE regular guy had this responsibility and burden thrust upon him.

That said, between the excellent PS4 game and now this movie, consider me a Miles Morales fan now. OG Peter Parker will always be "my" Spider-Man ... But Miles is pretty damn great, too. I am 100% there if Sony makes more animated movies with Miles as the main character.

This movie found a way to have its cake and eat it too. This was a movie full of multiple Spider-People, yet the whole theme of this burden being forced on "one regular guy/girl" still shone through. And the movie accomplished that with ease.

I was genuinely surprised by this movie. I knew it was probably going to be "interesting" considering they had Spider-Ham and... a Japanese school girl with a mech in the film's plot. Something I didn't know I wanted in a Spider-Man film, but when shit actually started going down

The Spider-Man in Miles' universe gets fucking CRUSHED to death by Kingpin, along with Miles dealing with survivor's guilt, the newfound responsibility that he was given AND knowing that he's now the same kind of person his dad hates, I knew I was in for a good time.

I also really liked how the major conflict in the story was, despite being reluctant, Miles trying to prove himself so none of the other Spider-People needlessly sacrifice themselves to prevent Kingpin's dimensional machine from destroying everything. But his lack of experience and inability to fully control his powers make it so that each of the others willingly volunteer to sacrifice their very existence for the sake of everyone else.

And I know this goes without saying, but the movie is a visual masterpiece. Between how invested I was in the story and just how cool everything looked, I felt like a small kid again.

This is probably the best Spider-Man film I've seen since Spider-Man 2 back in 2004. 100% recommended.

Saw it a few hours ago. I’m actually sort of shocked at how good it was. It’s honestly a better Spiderman movie than Homecoming was.

The fucking fantastic animation and whirlwind of colors helped a lot to make the movie as good as it was. The story and characters are pretty great too, even Miles who's usually dogshit was written really well and made pretty likable. I guess that’s what happens when someone other than Bendis writes your characters.

It was pretty funny too, a lot of the jokes from Spider-Noir and Spider-Pig and even Peni Parker were fucking great, they didn’t make me laugh at loud but they did give me a shit eating grin from how clever they are.

Pretty great as both a superhero film and animated movie, I’d recommend it without a doubt. Might actually go see it again.

Ok, I lied, there's another Spiderman that deserves to be in this film:

I'll see it once it comes out on blu-ray. Miles Morales never did much for me; I read some of his comics both when he was in the Ultimate universe and later when they placed him into the regular 616 universe and none of them ever really grabbed me and made me want to read more.

I've read that they push the Miles and Gwen pairing in this. At least here it looks like they've de-aged her some, so it's more appropriate. Whereas in the comics it comes off as some sort of creepy straight shota wish fulfillment with Miles being an awkward 15 or so teenage high school student and Gwen noticeably older and more mature, being a college drop out shown to (iirc) drink and go to clubs.

A lot of things have been said but I personally think the movie was so visually beautiful. I think you can even turn every second into a wallpaper like a Hayao Miyazaki movie. I was worrying about Miles at first because of the "forced diversity" shenanigans pushed in comics but by the end, he grew on me.

Also, it was definitely worth waiting for the after credits. Seriously, watch it.

As someone who was never really grabbed by comic Miles either, the version in this film kinda won me over. He works well as an audience perspective and the writers weren't afraid to give him flaws like being kinda (albeit understandably) cowardly & neurotic, and fucking up a lot in the beginning, having him work through said flaws as the plot progresses. Treating him as someone who needs to earn his hero status, not just have it handed to him and expecting everyone to recognize it, makes a huge difference and it's something I wish Marvel would take note of.

Hell, even Spider Gwen isn't all that bad in this, though she kinda feels like she's the one who had the longest list of "things you can't do with this character" handed down to the staff from some marketing department when being written; if that makes any sense. Though she does have some good moments, and her dynamic with Miles is decent. Plus it turns out her whole "internet feminist half-shave" hair cut is a minor plot-point and not something decided by the character, which even as a minor detail works a lot better.

Saw it yesterday. I’m not a huge Spider-Man person and I’m exhausted by the constant reboots but I went and saw it at @Opposite Time Nomad ’s insistence. Loved it. The animation is stylish and slick. The characters are likable and Miles is sympathetic which is a trait a lot of characters lack these days. The only way this absolute miracle came to be is that the producer and director told Sony to keep their sticky hands off and fuck off.

My only complaint is that I feel like the movie started slow. They crammed Miles' origin in at the start, and I feel like the position he was in fit really well for the movie, but it kinda dragged for a bit. Also he goes from spider bite to Spiderman in like two days. I however can think of a better way of doing it, giving him a full movie origin probably wouldn't have been as successful, giving him a synopsis origin at the start like the rest of the Spiders got doesn't really work with him being inexperienced, and the movie hinges on him being inexperienced.

I dunno, maybe if they kept it the same amount of time, but had him starting to be Spiderman on his own, rather than him just getting a Dad pep talk switch flip.

That's a very minor nitpick on my part though, over all I loved the movie, one of the funniest I've seen this year.

Look forward to more, however already worried since they are already talking about Spidergwen getting the next one first with Silk and Jessica Drew as costars.

Sony might have to calm down about their plans of 500 sequels and spinoffs. This first movie isn't doing great business. It'll break even, but I don't think it's doing enough to justify releasing a ton of them.
