Spike Chunsoft to Lift Ban on Streaming Danganronpa Ending

Spike Chunsoft shared a special Christmas Eve surprise for Let’s Players and streamers. The company announced that starting on December 24, 2022, it is fully lifting the long-standing ban on streaming or recording video of the first Danganronpa game (called Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc in English) past chapter 1. Now the rest of the game, including the Danganronpa ending can be viewed by all and sundry, with no permission needed.

On a blog post posted to the official Danganronpa website, Spike Chunsoft noted that since its launch in 2010, it has discouraged game streamers and creators making “Let’s Play” videos from recording the story of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc past chapter 1. After the ban is lifted, players can distribute play videos as they wish, up to and including the Danganronpa ending. The motivations for this ban were simple: As a linear mystery game, the story of Danganronpa is particularly vulnerable to spoilers.

But thirteen years have passed since its release, with several sequels out in the wild and versions of Danganronpa are available available on contemporary platforms. As such, Spike Chunsoft believes it is time that more people “experience the shock and surprise” that comes from experiencing the story, whether they play it directly or not.

As an additional hint, Spike Chunsoft stated that the lifting of the ban on December 24th coincides with a special date related to Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc. It encouraged fans to deduce the connection and reflect on it while they wait for the embargo to expire.

To be clear, the spoiler ban lift only applies to the first Danganronpa game. Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, and Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony, are all still under embargo. Spike Chunsoft discourages the sharing of video or strreams past the first chapters of the subsequent games. The lifting also only applies to personal, non-commercial use. Corporations and businesses seeking to capitalize on streams of Danganronpa should contact Spike Chunsoft for permission. As an aside, it should be pointed out that these rules mainly apply to those based in Japan, where rights-holders like Spike Chunsoft have more control over videos that would fall under “fair use” doctrines elsewhere.

More details about Spike Chunsoft’s “Play License” with regard to video creation and streaming may be seen here.

I thought they might have been referring to how the third game killer mastermind is obsessed with Junko. That's probably not a spoiler, but I did it anyway.

Well, game seems shit, but probably i'm biased because i don't like that type of art when i'm playing.
Try to make a better story in a modern JRPG than Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
Hint: You can't.

Like a Dragon was just literally every Yakuza game that came before it. Hint: They don't stray too far out of the norm. A real estate deal or some rich dude has gone bad. FUCK ME I gotta dump 80 hours and figure out why.

Oh wait it was some dumb fucking reason. Thanks, my time has been well spent by side stories.

So help me out here how did danganronpa make goons into troons?
I often wonder this, my best guess is that generally in a lot of japanese IPs, the girls are very feminine, they act like girls. The murder mystery plot causes most of the girls to NOT act like girls, despite the very feminine voice acting, so on top of being a video game it's probably a reassuring fantasy that supports their shitty personalities.

Gee I sure hope there aren't a million playthroughs on Youtube because it's old as dirt

Fun fact, streaming Ultra Despair Girls will most definitely net you a ban and Goodbye Despair will as well if you happen to get a certain scene. Have fun with that, streamers!
I'm never gonna play those games, what happens in those scenes?

Or it was Chihiro, a boy masquerading as a girl *yawn*

In Ultra Despair Girls there's a scene where a teenager is being molested rather heartily and there's a disclaimer that it doesn't count as child pornography. No really, the game tries to tell you it doesn't count as child pornography.

In Goodbye Despair there's a girl who looks like eight and has a shower scene.

Pretty much the premise of UDG is a bunch of kids are trying to kill all adults because of mistreatment either verbal physical or sexual by their parents. The scene @A-Stump is refering to is actually a minigame QTE they have in it. Was pretty damn shocked to see it pop up but luckily it was skippable.

Imagine making a game so shitty that you openly admit watching someone else play it is just as good as playing it yourself.
Applies to every VN, doesn't it? I never got the appeal.

on a scale of anime to cuties how bad is it?

I never understood the idea of character birthday date, why should people even care?

The Japanese care because they believe heavily in astrology, so when they do character profiles and they list information like birth date, blood type and things like that it's meaning to tell you something about their personality.

Westerners are just being autistic.

Gives a reason to spend money, plus some authors like to do something special like a yearly character q&a/fanart dump.

Sometimes they're interesting dates that add some symbolic fun but in all honesty it's probably an excuse to eat cake.

A Let's Play of Dangan Ronpa on Something Awful was the only translation people had to go on early on and the tumbler crowd loved it. Said tumbler people would all chip in on a single account and then basically get banned constantly early on for allowing multiple people to use their accounts.

Eventually though they all bought accounts for that LP then started spreading tumbler shit all over the forum. It's around the time of that you start seeing more and more troons and furries show up on the forum and more policing of language occur.

I remember one of the first signs for me was when it became verboten to make fun of furries. A tradition of Something Awful since the beginning, when questioned about it you got told "well we grew up." by some fag that hadn't even been there 2-3 years.

If anyone wants to read it for some reason, it's probably this one (2010):

Here's the cross dresser. If he's a tranny, it's barely.

It's a comic that trades off some panels for more text and the addition of sound, as well as "mechanics" every now and then. As a genre it has a sortof kitschy appeal, since you get away with a lot more prose and dialogue than most games provide for and can re-use backgrounds and sprites ad infinitum.

The best way to describe the genre is almost as a modern variation on the light novel. And like most light novels, the writing is usually shit and it's often bizarrely, cultishly adored by weirdos.
