Does Shane Gillis qualify as an lolcow comedian? Or is he just a regular 'ole bad comedian? He's routinely paraded around as this radical alt-right conservative comedian not afraid to say racial slurs or the word retard. Meanwhile, here's Shane's problematic "based" alt-right comedy:

"I'm a white man that likes guns, beer, and Trump."

Everyone is currently mad Gillis was terrible on SNL last month, but his prior SNL appearances sucked, so IDK what people were expecting. Dude looks like a generic midwest church chaplain, and barely uses cursewords. I'm surprised his entire schtick isn't cringe dad jokes.

Dave Chappelle has always hated white people in general but liked a few white guys like Norm MacDonald as exceptions. That has been a part of his standup material before the show. Nobody who actually speaks truth to power gets $20 million a pop for Netflix specials. His jokes are lame and tame now compared to what he did 25 years ago. To me, Chappelle ended when he had his mental breakdown, which I think was mostly overplayed. He didn’t want to do the show anymore because the material was weak, based on the few skits that were recorded.

It wasn't because the material was weak - Chappelle didn't want to continue his show 'cause he was in the throes of a severe crack addiction that he refused to get help for. I believe he was given an ultimatum by Comedy Central executives fed up with Chapelle's unreliable crackhead-edness. Allegedly he was told they'll pause the show for a bit so Chappelle can go to rehab for a few months/he'll take a small role in a Tyler Perry film which they'll use as cover for his rehab absence. Chapelle's response - "that's rayciss. Those Jew execs are rayciss, Tyler Perry is a sick fuck why he make black men wear a dress this is the Illuminati." Than he ran off to Africa.

Ironically Chapelle got sober when he discovered Farrakan's Nations of Prislam nonsense. I guess the tale of Yakuub's pale mutant creations made complete & total sense to Chapelle's crackrock marinated brain.

Definitely not a lolcow. He's a bit too middle of the road for that. I get sent clips of his stuff from time to time and I've never found him particularly funny or egregious. He just seems like the latest 'just spicy enough' comedian that'll win over the average joe enough to make him double over laughing and piss his pants.

He bombed on it but check out he’s specials he’s pretty funny. That used to be what you looked for in a comedian before the internet turned everyone autistic and unable to cope with anyone who slightly deviated from their own personal politics.

He’s pretty good at sketch comedy too.

It's impossible to do comedy on SNL. Larry David used to write for SNL. This is where he first met and worked with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who was a member of the notorious season that got everyone canned but Joe Piscapo and Eddie Murphy.

The way Larry has explained it is that the material that ends up on air is the stuff that pops during rehearsals with the audience. The problem is, the people showing up at 10am for a Tuesday SNL practice are out of town tourists, aka humorless idiots.

So naturally, they only pop for the dumbest shit. I'm aging myself but until Fox basically killed it, MadTV was far superior because a random audience of walk-ins weren't influencing the writing and production.

I'm never surprised when a standup shows up on SNL and they aren't funny.

you have to realize Stand up is basically on the same level as radio, the jokes they say have to appeal to the "normie" and not just the normie but the type of normie that watches tv and joe rogan and other mainstream bullshit.

Its like how Buddy Hackett was Ari Shaffir or Bobby Lee levels of insane and offensive but that was in comedy clubs and his routines on tv and in films were much lighter and very cringe dad joke level.

You're not going to have Shane going off on trannies on SNL or Conan. But if you find the right podcasts, especially pre-fame he was based & redpilled. like look up anything Shane did in 2019, he was practically saying the N-word on his Gas digital appearances.

Shane Gillis stand up is normal, very generic shitty "made for tv" levels garbage and he is a proud sell out, but he has a lot of good will because of the podcasts he has been on, like even Sam Hyde was shocked Shane was a huge fan of the early 2010s MDE stuff. Shane comes off as your normal dipshit "i just want to grill" bro, but he was talking about MATI on Compound media back in 2021, like he is very connected.

The reason Shane sucks on modern podcasts is because Shane is deeply scared of getting canceled, back before he got mainstream famous he was perfectly fine mocking holocaust victims and blacks for being too whiny, but he's doing commercials and mainstream tv shows and is too afraid of being real to be funny. its why he sucked on hot wings or other shows like that, his anxiety fucks him up. back when he was sleeping on a couch and hanging out in a buddy's house drinking beer in front of a mic he was great, but now he knows he says the wrong thing and it all goes away. look at Nick Mullen, they had to pull his super bowl commercial because of what he said in 2017 cumtown and he's a fucking socialist AKA "he's on their side"

SNL has always admitted it sucks compared to "pre-taped" comedy, its practically their motto "The show doesn't go on because it's ready; it goes on because it's eleven-thirty" and thats why every other show that does pre-taped such as SCTV, MadTV, In Living Color, KITH, The State, Chappele Show, K&P, Tim Robinson's you should leave, and most youtube sketches are much funnier, SNL doesn't even try to argue the shows good, they just argue its 11:30.

it is rather telling that the SNL digital shorts are considered so much better than the sketches from that era. in general live comedy sucks because they come up with the ideas in about 2 days and then spend the next 4 days rehearsing them.

Honestly SNL should have stopped in 2014 with the 40th anniversary, or at least loren should have fucked off. SNL had about 3 good eras in its first 40 years. 1. the first 5 years, 2. the Hartman era, and 3. the digital short era and every season outside of those were fucking rough and mainly survived on inertia.

the last 10 years have been fucking miserable with way more misses than hits, guys like Tim Robinson and Shane Gillis achieved way bigger fame outside of the show because of just how dogshit the show is at being funny, the biggest cast member to come out of modern SNL is Pete Davidson and that has 0% to do with him being funny, because he's not, there's a reason bob levy mainly used him as a rentboy.

I don't think I've ever seen a single episode of "Hot Ones" where the guests were entertaining. Not really sure why that show is popular. Here's a brief sentence that summarizes like, 99% of Hot Ones episodes: "I drive a...*celebrity consumes hot sauce* Oh fuck, where's the milk, this Carolina Reaper sauce is like pepper spray in my mouth waaaah! so anyway I drive a Mercedes AMG...."

Anyway, it's a shame Shane Gillis is one of the few comedians who fears cancelation, instead of the mediocre ones who use "cancelation" for free tour promotions/an easy excuse for getting heckled for unfunny jokes/going on long-winded political rants they think are jokes during comedy shows.

I think it's just age. Lorne didn't realize Kate McKinnon was a lesbian when he hired her and like a boomer boss in some sketch went "I didn't know you were gay when I hired you" to her face, not understanding the implication of that statement. The writers have openly hated his decisions on things like trump and other guest bookings and while he's mellowed out, his judgement because he's so old and white has led him to do stuff like refuse to embrace more filmed sketches despite those resonating with people more.

Hm, checks out. As a lipstick lesbian, I've noticed I do tend to confuse old boomer men who expect all lesbians to present as stereotypical butch dykes. Although I'd probably call a law firm and try to win the ghetto lottery if a boss ever said that to me point blank. Especially since I'm not the rainbow flags on display "being gay is my entire personality trait" sorta lesbian.

I always found Kate McKinnon to be one of the few good 2010's era SNL cast members. Hopefully she was treated well by the rest of the cast during her tenure & has moved on to better things, like a streaming show or hosting a podcast (...not being sarcastic; podcasts are a big cash cow nowadays).

Hicks could be funny but the veneration of Hicks and George Carlin did more to destroy stand up comedy that the friends of Joe Rogan. I hate the notion of comedians wandering around thinking they are philosopher-kings when they are just degenerate alcoholics who have forgot their job is to make us laugh.

They all look down on the music hall comedians of the past even though those guys got their audiences to laugh and not just clap.

Like, yeah, Chappelle is a funny comedian...but only when he's telling jokes. He hasn't been touring as a comedian for quite some time now - he just stands around making somewhat spicy clever observations about the world. Which to many people, is entertaining/makes Chapelle worthy of paying to see on tour - but it's absolutely not traditional comedy. No, "haha" belly laughs to be had by the majority of Chapelle's modern material.

As much as people bitch about how "SNL was never good" they genuinely tried everything in the early days. Now it's been on autopilot for decades now.

You know you're getting the two musical performances and weekend update and a short weird sketch at the end of the episode and a pre-filmed parody after the monologue and the opening sketch is very topical if not political and it's very tiresome.

I think Shane Gillis and Nate barghaze is because of a combination of an agent using a favor and them being genuinely huge. Hollywood loves these "moderate" white dudes like them or bill burr who can connect with icky non-liberals and maybe possibly convince them of the error of their ways

SNL truly does need the ratings as shown by them using so many past cast members this obnoxious season. They have 30 cast members but I guess Dana Garvey needs to bring out the church lady sketch
