There's an even longer version that was cobbled together for the network TV broadcast in the early 80's, but I've never seen of dug into that one to know what the differences were.
I believe that's the one I have on my VHS tape. It says it's longer. That's how I have the first 6 Stat trek movies. Paid 20 bucks for a sealed collectors copy with all the movies.

In all honesty DS9 was Starfleet Command placing a lot of confidence in Worf and granting him a huge opportunity. Probably with the intention of promoting him to Captain after his tour was over.
I recall Sisko saying he had to pull in favors to get Worf on there. I'm sure Starfleet was reluctant to send a lose cannon like him over there but Sisko insisted he was vital to help with the developing Klingon situation.

SFDebris' review of the Host (TNG episode) posted today. I had not realized just how big to the franchise the Trill had become as an alien.

So much of that episode got retconned by DS9. The look of the species and the sheer concept that you could just stick the worm in a non-Trill and it just works. And TNG's Trill is not a symbiotic entity because it simply overrides the host entirely. DS9 presented a much more well thought out take on that species.

Oh about the look, they were going to go with it for Jadzia and there are make up tests of Terry with the full Trill TNG look then producers looked at it and made the call "You've got a super gorgeous actress like Terry and you're hidding her face behind alien make up? FUCK THAT."

They made a few very minor tweaks, if I recall, to the 4K edition (which defeats the purpose of a DE as the director is long dead so he can't approve), but mostly they cleaned up the effects shots, and improving the look of V-Ger for the outer shot of it at the end. One thing they did for the 4k version that really fucked it up is early in the movie when Bones and Kirk are talking in a lounge room, they insisted on putting large windows behind them showing the space outside (because that was in the original plans for the movie). To accomplish this, they had to cut out McCoy and Kirk from the original footage and they look like shit now. Otherwise, it's great.

Oldest TV trick in the book. “We need this guy. He’s a loose cannon. He’s not politically correct. He’s allowed to shoot people.":blart:

He’s been blacklisted across the entire service because he keeps saying Klingon slurs but he’s really good at killing banana-eared aliens. He’s the only man for the job.

Didn’t Rick Berman publicly brag about changing Jadzia’s makeup? “I made her hotter. You’re welcome, sci-fi.”

And then later he tells her, to her face, she should be "working at Kmart,” which is such a dope thing to say to an actor. "Listen sweetheart, alien makeup doesn’t grow on trees.”

Worf ended up being Captain of the Enterprise. Riker didn't. That's funny. Riker only had to wait a couple of years perhaps and the enterprise could have been his for so long.
Riker makes no sense. He’s too ambitious to settle down with Troi, but not ambitious enough to take the job he keeps being offered. Data and Worf both end up running the ship before him.

And he never challenges Picard! Chakotay at least argues with Janeway.

The only good Riker episodes are when Picard’s gone or he’s stuck on a Klingon ship. Otherwise he’s either banging an alien or he's incarcerated, or both.

Okay, with that out of the way... Riker was feeling too comfy on the bridge of the Big E as Picard's XO. I mean, who could blame him? Sitting on the comfy bridge all day, banging hot aliens, getting in and out of trouble because of hot aliens, visiting interesting places with hot aliens, playing the trombone for hot aliens and having his trombone played by hot aliens...

He had the best job on the ship, and he knew it.

I came a little.

I'd love a high quality TMP cut-away like this. Closest I've seen is the AMT model kit poster and old marketing material for TMP, which might as well be lost media.

There's supposed to be a copy of the latter here, but imgur is shit and just keeps throwing back 429 errors whenever I try to download it.

Shelby's criticism of Riker in TBOBW was entirely valid, much as it rankled fans to hear it. Riker had spent so long in Picard's shadow that he had given up any hint of ambition and had forgotten how to command.

It was even the plot of an entire episode, where Riker had to choose between staying as First Officer on the flagship or become captain of a less prestigious ship.

The more I think about it, VOY actually gives its characters more stuff to do. Not better stuff; just more. I hated Neelix, Borg kid episodes, Tuvok crashing a shuttle every week, etc. but when you look back at TNG you realize there are no classic episodes about Geordi, Beverly, Riker...Ro and O’Brien get more interesting shit to do and they're bit players.

He probably realized he needed another decade before he could collect a pension and like most military...that made his decision for him.

In all honesty DS9 would have been a step up for him. Especially after receiving a promotion to Lt Cdr. Large station, multitude of races, nexus between the Cardassians and the Gamma Quadrant and Bajor, working with non-starfleet security, probably a much bigger staff. In all honesty DS9 was Starfleet Command placing a lot of confidence in Worf and granting him a huge opportunity. Probably with the intention of promoting him to Captain after his tour was over.
It was a DEI promotion.

His ambition was the Enterprise. I'm sure he took the job because he hoped one day he would move from First Officer to Captain. It wasn't his fault that Picard was healthy and refused to die or retire.

That's a problem with the movies. He's been second for about twenty years just to keep the status quo of the show. After Generations, Picard should have considered retirement. By the end of Insurrection, he should have done it and give up the ship for Riker. That would have been a good change for him too because, next to Riker, he didn't grow as a character either:

Worf became Chief of Security (S2)
Geordi became Chief Engineer (S2)
Troi took her test to be a Bridge Officer (S7)
Data got his emotions chip (GEN)
Beverly was named chief of Starfleet med for one year (S2), so her rank is as much as she can be without being an admiral.
O'Brian got married, had a child, and was transfered to DS9 (S4/5)
Ro became lieutenant (S7)
Even Wesley finally went to Starfleet, despite he later abandoned it. It was still a change for him.

Meanwhile, Riker has been just Number One for two decades and it's kinda sad he never got his one ambition: being the Captain of the Enterprise (aside from TBOBW).

Maybe Nemesis should have started with Riker being the Captain after Picard decided to take a sabbatical with that Ba'ku woman and later returns to help them with the Romulans as a diplomat. It would also put in perspective how his life changed after losing his family and he's considering having a family, something set up since Generations.

The scene so interesting it spawned an entire show

Sure but we got Ezri out of it. A worthy trade.
She went to star in the super popular and well known Ted Danson vehicle: Becker. *scoffs*
The funniest thing ever is I randomly tuned into an episode of Becker some years later and noticed she was off that show too. I never looked it up if she left of her own again or got dropped from the show. (Which if you leave two regular show in a row would be the sort of this that would get you black balled from TV series I would think. Not exactly a reliable regular cast member.)

She was okay, but seeing her on a sitcom felt so wrong.

Edit: Looked it up, she's the one who left. Kek. First she was asking for as much money but to do less episode and be able to pursue her own work. When they wouldn't do that, and the show was looking to change romantic interest anyway she just left. The rest of her IMDB has zero regular roles after as suspected.
