iirc his actor started out playing him bi and absolutely looking to fug bashir's boipucci but execs (?) said to nix it
Garak was gay as hell in his first appearance.

I was only critiquing the idea of retroactively trying to appear more progressive than they actually were like J.K Rowling and her twitter retcons . But if that was the intent from the beginning then I don't mind.

The Professor is a limp wristed, lisping and prancing gay stereotype. Think Jack from Will and Grace dialed up even more.

Ginger is the token evil white character.

Nah, the professor is a woman because we got to get da girlz inta da stemz!

Ginger would be the trans.

Given Garak's former and current line of work being somewhat flamingly gay is a job requirement.

My buddy makes a convincing case that Garak was "job-sexual" - that is he would bang any and everything he could if it would accomplish the mission. His life, his love and his lady, was Cardassia.* (pronounce it "car-dass-sea")

If you really want to go nerdy, and this could have been something interesting for the writers to examine, but given that in Cardassia, foreplay with the females is bitching at them like an internet movie reviewer, maybe Garak was coming off "gay" because he was trying to be as opposite of the "flirting" in his culture as possible - which ended up coming off as flirting in Bashir's culture.

Or imagine some young woman thought Worf was coming on too strong and hit him, making Worf think he just got the greenlight for some Klingon tussling. ("the more they fight, the more they want it")

Of course such stories would require ACTUAL bravery from the writers, and we know Hollywood is filled with the biggest sheep of all.

*"Bashir, you're a fine girl. What a good wife, you would be..." We could have a song here.

I like to imagine that the term "Cardie" which O'Brien throws around all the time is like the equivalent of calling someone a "Jap" or "Chinaman," in that it's considered very offensive to the (obviously non-Cardassian) social justards in the majority of the Federation, and it only makes me like his character even more.

Your buddy isn't wrong as the show itself was pointing that out several times throughout the series. Although more in the manner of bloodshed of instead booty calls to complete the mission.

That's actually more boring than the idea that he just coincidentally really wanted to occupy Bashir's asshole.

Don't forget "spoonhead", which was definitely considered a racial slur behind the scenes in Empok Nor.

Alright you motherfuckers, I'm listening to the first 20 min of this:

And they have a discussion about Star trek almost word for word what we've had on this board the last 2 days. So which one of you is it? Goldberg? Long? Podhoritz? I'm going to figure out which of you is stealing material from the farms....

;)

Yeah, because if there's one thing Hollywood definitely doesn't have anything of, is gay love stories. How original and interesting! /sarc

The obvious explanation is that Garak correctly read Bashir as vain and naive, and so he lavished attention and flattery on Julian to manipulate him.

The comedy explanation is that Garak mistakenly read Bashir as gay, and so he tried to flirt with Julian before he realized Julian was straight.

Another prophetic comment by Moore from that old interview. I'm even going to tag @GeneralFriendliness into this because he'll love it for the star wars thread.

That’s been a staple of the STAR TREK culture from the get-go. People really love the details. They love the fact that the details all add up and make one mosaic, and that the universe holds together. When you don’t give a shit, you’re telling the audience: don’t bother. Don’t bother to really learn this stuff, because it’s not going to matter next week, anything that happened this week.

Yeah, but I can at least see how "spoon head" might be considered offensive.

The "racial slurs" that are just shortening or altering the name of a race have always been particularly ridiculous to me.

Let's not even get into universal translators and swearing or racial slurs... lol

(I mean from what we're told, Odo's people had the species name equivalent of "chinks" or "niggers.")

When was this?

Also, I'm suddenly reminded about how the Andorians on Enterprise called humans "pink skins." (And the joke SFDebris made about Sisko's hypothetical reaction to them calling him "brown skin".)

lol, ok. Paki.

Whatever you say, Jap.

Sure thing, you Yid.

Not to mention, the word "nigger" is literally just a spinoff of the word "negro."

I thought "changeling" was more like calling someone with dwarfism "elf," because changelings are creatures which appear in the mythologies of peoples across the Delta Quadrant. I guess It's still not a polite thing to do.

O'Brien must suffer; he's forced to help that spoonhead Garak.

When was this?

It was in like the first episode with the Changelings IIRC.

If Andorians still act that way towards Humans, The Sisko might have to cloak and decloak right on top of the Andorian Imperial Palace with the USS Ben Sisko's Motherfucking Pimp Hand,.

I think such claims should probably be taken with a grain of salt (because Garak). What does he tell Bashir at some point? Don't believe a word that he says, especially when he's telling the truth?

The obvious explanation is that Garak correctly read Bashir as vain and naive, and so he lavished attention and flattery on Julian to manipulate him.
Yes, albeit with the caveat that Garak does genuinely like Bashir and is trying, in his own cloak-and-dagger way, to give him a more realistic view of life and politics in the galaxy than his Federation upbringing equipped him with.

Oh yeah there's certainly room for Garak gonna Garak
Also
>Julian was straight.
Uhh. Sure. Riiiight.

Does anything still think Tarantino will still make his R-rated Star Trek movie while the fourth Kelvin timeline movie gets made at the same time?
Apparently he removed the footwear from the Starfleet uniform. Personally, I think there's some continuity errors and I can't imagine it's very practical, but the man made Pulp Fiction - so I think we're in good dirty sexy big feet hands.

In all seriousness, I don't know what to expect or when they'll manage to pump it out. But I've become accustomed to being frustrated and dissapointed by virtually every Star Trek related thing for the past decade, so I'm expecting nothing and I'm also expecting something less than nothing. And something less than nothing, nothing.

Regardless I’m betting he’ll end up having his next film be with Paramount (he did mentioned the possibility of another Kill Bill movie since Paramount is currently looking to buy Miramax’s catalog).
