What about all the whales though? Star Trek IV was silly haha. (I might even like it more than most because it's the first Trek Movie I actually remember watching.) I literally remember watching it as a child while sitting in my grandfather's lap... He's the one who got me into Trek in the first place.

With that said, Wrath of Khan is still my all time favorite Trek film. But my grandfather never mentioned it to me before he passed :/

the whales never bothered me tbh. sure in hindsight it was a clear ecological message of "fucking up the planet will have consequences", but it even then it was never as hamfisted as "how dare you!".

I'd probably rate it higher than V simply because I hardly remember anything about it (maybe that's both good and bad).

Star Trek Bridge Commander is probably my favorite Star Trek PC game.

you really need to check out bridge crew then. no star power to carry and clearly content starved, but it gives you the perfect star trek feeling with the right people - but needs VR tho (you can play it without it but it looses quite a bit this way).

default is nutrek (ironically the easiest for zoomer difficulty), but the base version has the TOS bridge and there's TNG as dlc.

I have VR, but no other friends with VR and my love of Trek to play this with and I'm not sure playing it solo sounds like much fun.

25th Anniversary and Judgment Rites were probably my favorites, but I also put a lot of time into EGATrek. You can play it online, but I recommend downloading it and running it in DOSBox (or on a real DOS machine!) for the best experience.

The hamfisted environmentalist shit can be easily forgiven with such glorious dialogue as "Double dumbass on you!" and "Too much LDS."

Double dumbass on you has always been one of my favorite movie insults, even before I truly understood what it meant when I first saw IV as a kid. Just the way William Shatner said the line is great.

randoms. I admit it has been a while, but back then it was a lot of fun just matchmaking and seeing what happens (partly due to VR still being a niche of enthusiasts mostly, which keeps most shitters at bay). you also should use voice chat, which turns even more people off.

word of warning tho:
1. be prepared to be captain more often than not, as usual people rather be told what to do than giving orders.
2. be ready to explain how the stations work over and over, since hardly anyone does tutorials.
3. similar to 2, be ready to run the basic bitch scanning mission a lot. it's kinda boring just flying around and collecting particles, but it's good to learn the ropes without another ship fucking you up (my excuse was "it's night shift duty doing stuff you don't see on the show". )
3b. added perk you can also do that on the TOS bridge (which makes everyone go WTF?! at first) so you can later switch to that easily if your group wants. however 1 and 2 apply even more strongly there.
4. different people are different. had good crews, bad crews and truly exceptional captains (both in the literal and wordfilter sense), like I said at worst you get some casual that randomly picked up an occulus and bridge crew, so you can probably guess how often that happens. however the game is not really difficult in itself, mostly a matter of coordination, so if you know how stuff works you can mostly do stuff on your own without orders constantly.

I 100% it with randoms, but that was in 2018, couldn't say how good (or bad) it is now.

dude apparently still plays bridge crew every once in a while, and as I just found out played a final unity recently.

This is really painful to watch.
Also lol at the fat ginger lady, you think she'll get a black token love interest bodybuilder called Tyrone in the future?

Stamets just stands there, stupefied...contrast with Riker, who would have immediately performed the "Riker Maneuver" and tried to bang whatever this new alien gender happens to be.
Don't be ridiculous, Riker would have fucked the Gendercrazy straight out of her and make her howl in delight, much to the dismay of whoever has his sleeping quarters next to Riker's (most likely Barclay).

You would think in star trek universe, they are all already aware of genderspecials, since you know, we have them currently.
If star trek REALLY wants to be ahead of its time they should introduce a transracial character. It could be a white woman who has all of Keiko's interests, or a white dude who just has Chakotay's old script. They don't even have to write new stuff for these people.

Wasn't Odo transgender, transracial, AND trans-furry? (He was a dog in area 51)

for a moment I was confused why they would wear STD uniforms in star trek IV, but then I recognized it's not a whale, it's tilly.
apparently old/new starfleet has no fitness standards whatsoever for it's personnel. I could accept it for civilian scientists, but man...

I also find the lack of MtF representation much more concerning, this trend of excluding of a large part of the LGBT movement is problematic and worrisome, STD and CBS better cancel themselves as good allies if they're know what's right.

She really getting to be massive she's practically spilling out of that suit.

What kind of military organization (and Starfleet IS a fucking space navy before any pacifists get their panties in a bunch) would allow that hair style on duty? It's completely unprofessional.
I miss when Star Trek was written by actual people who had been in the military. That's part of what made the Starfleet of TOS so believable.

Also, Avery Brooks is in The Captains. My most poignant comment on it while watching it with Herr TaimuRadiu was "Avery Brooks IS the LSD."
Was Avery Brooks in ANY of the supplemental DS9 material at all? I thought after the show was done he just stopped giving a fuck about Sisko and Star Trek.
