I have VR, but no other friends with VR and my love of Trek to play this with and I'm not sure playing it solo sounds like much fun.
randoms. I admit it has been a while, but back then it was a lot of fun just matchmaking and seeing what happens (partly due to VR still being a niche of enthusiasts mostly, which keeps most shitters at bay). you also should use voice chat, which turns even more people off.
word of warning tho:
1. be prepared to be captain more often than not, as usual people rather be told what to do than giving orders.
2. be ready to explain how the stations work over and over, since hardly anyone does tutorials.
3. similar to 2, be ready to run the basic bitch scanning mission a lot. it's kinda boring just flying around and collecting particles, but it's good to learn the ropes without another ship fucking you up (my excuse was "it's night shift duty doing stuff you don't see on the show". )
3b. added perk you can also do that on the TOS bridge (which makes everyone go WTF?! at first) so you can later switch to that easily if your group wants. however 1 and 2 apply even more strongly there.
4. different people are different. had good crews, bad crews and truly exceptional captains (both in the literal and wordfilter sense), like I said at worst you get some casual that randomly picked up an occulus
and bridge crew, so you can probably guess how often that happens. however the game is not really difficult in itself, mostly a matter of coordination, so if you know how stuff works you can mostly do stuff on your own without orders constantly.
I 100% it with randoms, but that was in 2018, couldn't say how good (or bad) it is now.
dude apparently still plays bridge crew every once in a while, and as I just found out played a final unity recently.
