I was kind of in the same boat as you. My dad tried to show me Trek right after DS9 ended but I was too young to appreciate it. The first JJ Trek came out when I was in jr high and I remember going to see it but not liking it but people I knew who did like Trek seemed pleased enough.JJ Trek had charm, cool space battles, and actual sexy women, enough to draw people into the autism vortex. It's not a replacement, fuck no, but on its own, it's a good baby's first Star Trek.
As for what's actually a good entry point, I couldn't say. During the summer between junior and senior year, I was trying to get into the pants of a girl in the board game group and she was into Trek and Firefly among other things, so I started watching TNG and DS9. That went nowhere but it was chasing pussy, of all things, that got me into Trek.
