I wonder if we have any actual TOS fundies here. I'm close. I'm pretty much TOS/TNG and everything after is crap.
I don't think everything after it is crap, but I think TOS and five of the first six movies are far and away better than everything that followed. There are a lot of great TNG episodes, but TNG was on the air longer, and honestly I think quite a few episodes of TNG are also quite boring and gay. For every "The Inner Light", there's a "Sub Rosa." TOS has it's share of stinkers, but I think it's stylistically more interesting than a lot of stuff that followed, because of the era it was produced in, the insanity of some of the plots and because the rules of the universe weren't set in stone yet. The bad episodes of TNG are just kind of boring. The bad episodes of TOS are insane.

That being said, I do prefer the TOS movies to everything. I personally think those are the finest Star Trek material ever produced, even when you factor in how boring the first one is and how bad the fifth one is. II, III, IV & VI are just that good. They managed to hit a middle ground between the rigid adherence to protocol and rules that sometime bogs down TNG plots, the anything goes insanity of TOS and these very human, relatable themes about getting older, hubris, revenge and friendship.

Probably worth mentioning that there are indeed subdivisions of TOS fundamentalists. I.e. those who only consider the first two seasons of TOS canon, those who consider all of it canon, those who consider first two seasons plus 50% of an episode of the animated series canon, and this one old lady who only counts episodes canon if kirk is forcibly undressed in some way

In hindsight I think the moment where even the most degenerate and desperate shills abandoned any pretence of #loving the show and its #muhdiversity and #muhinclusivity and whatever buzzwords were in vogue at the time was when they had perennial political failure and conspiracy theorist (and formerly AOC tier muhssiah who was ubiquitously shilled by reddit/twitter liberals and literally nobody else on the planet) Stacey Abrams be "dramatically" revealed as the glorious and beloved president of earth

I remember it like a light being switched and near nobody was even bothering to defend this horseshit. I wonder if paramount looked at the budget and realised they could only afford one set of bots/"influencers" and ordered them switched to Strange New Worlds

The idea is that they imprisoned him behind the barrier. They know how to send objects vast distances in moments and presumably have the technology to protect themselves from unwanted outsiders, so the idea of sending one of their own to a distance place and surrounding it with that same protective technology isn't far fetched at all. It strikes me as more interesting than the old fall-back of "Q did it".
Hey the continuum series of books is pretty entertaining trying to create a unified trek theory.

Well in those it wasn't exactly "Q did it" - well... John deLance Q kind of did screwing around with the Guardian of Forever once - and then the Continuum had to clean up his mess. But it was a neat little idea. The being at the center was basically ripped apart by the Continuum until only it's "head" remained.

The best Trek books were often the Q books because the authors could REALLY go nuts without being limited to a TV/movie budget. It's why I was always disappointed none of the movies involved Q. (Man if nemesis had been Wesley using his new powers to screw around with the continuum and then Q is like "clean up your divot, Picard"...)

I will say that the TOS movies were MOVIES, whereas the TNG movies were largely just two-part TNG episodes.
First Contact being the only one that most feels movie-like.

I think TNG, DS9, and to lesser extent VOY and ENT had some great crew friendships/connections but nothing will top the triumvirate of Spock/McCoy/Kirk especially with how the TOS movies explored changes over time.

Classic relationships that went on for decades (in-show and in real life years). But the core cast of Lower Decks has really solidified as a great group dynamic, too. I know very little about the showrunner but he obviously has a genuine love of classic Trek and I've been enjoying it. I hope it gets canceled before somebody can ruin it.

And Star Trek has never fucking healed from the damage it unwittingly wrought by convincing Kurtzman and friends that it would be the ideal template for the franchise "revival"

Seriously. Discovery and Picard were created entirely to replicate the mindless action schlock, melodrama, and hammy fucking dialogue that made First Contact such a flawed movie to begin with, but with the added cancer of currentyear "hire literal tumblr retards to write and community theater rejects to play the main cast and just slather everything in CGI and joss whedon quips and muh political buzzwords/topics to distract retards and silence criticism" schtick shoved into every orifice to just make everything so much more irredeemable even fucking decades from now.

If modern Trek were anywhere near as good as First Contact, I'd be doing cartwheels. I think Picard season three is very similar to First Contact and it's better for it, but the first two seasons are more like modern day mystery box melodramas than a mindless action movie. All that being said, I've never watched Discovery.

ST:D review!

>Tilly's still fat, if not fatter and some skinny White guy is trying to get into her pants. lol
>Still no White men on the bridge
>They're coping TNG's "The Chase"
>Endless scenes with people talking about their feelings

Star Trek is fucking back!

So STD season 5 came out and they're basing it off of the
Progenitirs - the race that apparently created all the humanoid species in the two parter "The Chase".

So dumb.

The good ole' Star Trek was never really meant for movies IMO. An exploration sci-fi fantasy of the future worked better in episode format, different stories arcs, character development, depth, hard ethical dilemmas stretched out etc. Thats a big aspect that always stood out to me when you compare it to Star Wars or other sci-fi movies.

I got done watching Euphoria and made the mistake of starting Discovery. It feels like they dropped the same writers and dialogue as a horny, immature, melodramatic high school drama and forgot that Starfleet was supposed to have intelligence and competence. I can make some concessions because its early Starfleet and its a bit rough around the edges but if thats how your characters behave its a wonder humanity didn't kill itself with stupidity.
So STD season 5 came out and they're basing it off of the
LA writers are making a poor case for replaced by AI when they are this lazy. I could understand it making a resurgence in Picard but Discovery is the better opportunity to do something new without fucking with TNG.

Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered country disagree my nigga.

Most of the star trek movies are ass because the people making them had no idea what the fuck they were doing or were there solely for a paycheck. But have proper motivated people in charge and you get some genuinely great films. We have seen Star Trek films work, it just takes the right people to do it. And good lord do they not have the right people right now.

Not going to add The Voyage Home?

Just a fun short film with two great Trek actors.

Believe me I am very familiar with how badly hollywood learns the wrong lesson from things. You're not wrong, but that doesn't take away from the movie's quality.

Heck I think a strong case could be made that DS9 in stuff like "way of the warrior" and Voyager's "Scorpion" also had a big impact on Kurtzman and friends. But I wouldn't take anything away from those quality episodes.

Not my cup of tea, but I can see why some people would like it. It is more ruined for me by the fact that Star trek has done time travel to death and I just really don't find the time travel plots to be that interesting anymore since they follow the same limited set of plots every single time, be it on the big or little screen.

The only exception being DS9's Trials and Tribbilations which I will always adore, and most of my interest for that is just how well it managed to mix DS9's characters/plot into the actual TOS's original episode.

The issue for me is that they made it too goofy and plus the whole thing with the whales doesn't really make that much sense. Plus the soundtrack for it is weird.
