I wonder if this phenomenon is caused by all modern treks beginning with Kurtzman trek being such trash that people are forced to look at previous entries with more favorability since they aren't as shit?

I think that is generally accepted to at least be second to two, but no one ever talks about it. It seems mostly forgotten by the fandom who jizz over Wrath of Khan (Its great, I am just tired of hearing how great it is).

No you are right. Six is probably just behind two. I think 3 gets a lot of shit, because of how fun 4 is, but I like it. It kind of falls apart when they get to the planet and thats more to how janky the planet destruction looks. 2,3, 4 are a fun trilogy to watch.

Five is just bonkers. The start when they are camping is fun.

I recall in most nerd circles I encountered it was like
2 or 6 depending on personal taste, usually TNG fans preferring 6, but the other a close second, normies like 4, TMP was the FEET guy, 5 was trolling

My favorite TOS movie is IV; there's a part where they have to infiltrate some county general hospital to rescue Chekov and they bring dr. McCoy along. He asks some random old lady what her deal is and she goes "I'm waiting for a round of dialysis" to which he gives her what looks like a pill. Later on when they're escaping, they see the same lady ecstatic because she grew a full healthy kidney.
Like this is the stuff I miss about Star Trek. Dialysis is this painfully obtuse, retrograde treatment alternative to a very real health problem. Here's this movie saying "don't worry, we eventually get our shit together, and things like these can be handled in the same way you take care of a headache".

For me it's 2/6 -> 4 -> 3 -> 1 -> 5.

I like 5, but it definitely suffered from budgetary constraints, the perennial writers' strikes, and poor SFX. It was a TOS episode stretched out to 106 minutes, which threw the pacing off. Nevertheless, the interactions between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy were kino and every character got their chance to shine.

None of you brought up I. Shameful display. That kino brought me into Trek. Not my favorite but it's definitely a trip. 6 is amazing really. 5 is hilarious. 4 is my personal favorite. 3 is just kinda there. And 2 is just classic, who doesn't like Kahn?
There's a dedicated TMP fan base out there, mainly out there for the visuals and as I've heard they feel it stays truer to original trek than the rest of the movies. I just think it's a bit of slog with way too much filler that doesn't really advance the story. Although Kirk's flyby of the refit Enterprise is quite nice since Connie refit is best starship. As for favorite movies. Mine goes 6>2>4.

The length of TMP is it's only sin. Otherwise it's a classic TOS episode on a movie budget. And that is the shit I live for, since TOS is my show.
3 is like a forced sequel. The villain is a bit bland and not having Kirstie Alley play Saavik again didn't feel right.
3 just does what it needs to, you get spock back so you can save the whales in 4.

That is my main problem with TMP is that it's just a rehash of an episode of TOS. Its not bad, but it doesn't reach the same highs as 2/6.

If it was a 2 part TV special people would have loved it. It went on way too long because of Roddenberry's fucking autism. On the plus side, the CGI and practical effects were insane when it came out, so at least it was impressive. V'ger is still fucking awesome. That's why it fits into the KINO category. You kinda just have to take it as a period piece.

Oh, I agree the effects are awesome in TMP, the uniforms not so much.
What you didn't like seeing every dude's bulge lmao?

I have two real problems with TMP.
1) The moral of the story seems to be "act like a dick and get what you want." V'ger shows up, says it wants to meet it's conception of God, and threatens to destroy Earth if it doesn't get its way. Kirk shows up, uses the crisis to push Decker out of the center chair, not because the mission really needs him, but because he wants to be captain again. Spock shows up, wants to see if there really is anything more than logic, actually assaults a crewman, when he isn't telling his captain that he is in some kind of contact with V'ger, and ends up learning that he can reconcile his logical and emotional halves after all.

2) Decker has no real motivation to want to join V'ger. At least in the novel his mother is a "New Human" who are all basically hippies who think mentally joining together is a great idea and people who go into Starfleet are obsolete humans. Probe Ilia shows more and more of her actual Ilia-ness, the closer they get to Earth, especially once they reach V'ger, and Decker wants to be with her and V'ger gives him the opportunity to merge with her and it and become something more than just Decker.

But movie Decker just pines over the dead Ilia and then says "I want this as much as you wanted the Enterprise" when he's never mentioned joining with her mentally and spiritually at all or the possibility of consciousnesses joining. If the writers and director had at least put in a line or two about his mother thinking it was good for humanity and the future but he thought his father was right but now he's open to the idea or something but they didn't, so it just feels very out of place to me.
