It’s a perfect example of how not to use an Abrams-style mystery box.

The Romulans are supposed to be sneaky, fine, but planning their own 9/11 event to smear Androids? At the end of the day, there was no reason for the Romulans not to work with the Federation to stop these weird synths invading their space.

Those tentacles from all the dimensions – they’re not even interesting, just tedious and easily dealt with.

We get this treacherous Soong Android tossed in, and what was her motive? Because I sure as hell can't remember.

Look, maybe I’m the only one who cares about this, but I resent how the Romulans are a lazy, fill-in-the-blank villain for whatever the writers are trying to force down our throats. It’s like they can’t trust the story to stand on its own, so they just throw in a familiar name – Borg, Romulans – it doesn’t matter, even if it completely contradicts everything we’ve seen before, and everything we’re going to see.
There are no good examples of the Abrams-style mystery box. None of them ever pay off, it's just lazy shit meant to get you interested for the next episode.

If PIcard could have gotten tentacle androids to fuck off by broadcasting peace waves at it they were never a threat and the Romulan Star Empire was destroyed from within by insane feminists who didn't know what they were doing. Possibly led by Sela. I want to blame everything on that haafa.

The android colony full of androids from a son of Soong you have literally never heard of before is uh, evil, because. For all I know it wasn't even a true biological son of Soong but another fucking android.

You know I stand corrected. I had forgotten SFDebris had reviewed 3 episodes of Picard and... yes he did a quick fanfic of had it been Janeway yelling at him in episode 2. I've timestamped the video below to the moment.
Admiral Shutthefuckup was right, Captain Shaw was right. Jean-Luc should have clearly explained what was going on.

I just turned on Pluto and joined a TNG episode in the middle. I'm guessing it's early cause Tasha Yar is there but what the fuck is going on?!

Everyone is scantily clad in white clothes on what I can only describe as a fuck planet. Wesley is fumbling some baddie that clearly wants to fuck and some orb just knocked out Data on the bridge...what the fuck am I watching?!
Star Trek. You are watching Star Trek as it is supposed to be. Go watch TOS and get even more confused. Season 1 of TNG was organically TOS and was even run by some of the same people who wrote for TOS (David Gerrold, DC Fontana)

@Get the rope Macaulay!

In Strange New Worlds they bring up the fact that a lot of shit gets changed because of time travellers and the Temporal Cold War. I don't know if Chronowerx comes up again, probably? (Company founded by evil dude played by Ed Begley Jr in the two parter where a timeship goes back in time to destroy the Voyager because, knowing Janeway, she probably actually did destroy the Earth) I know season 2 of Picard gets referenced a bunch.

Nero was not a very bright man.
When Nero screamed in Pike’s face for pointing out that his planet was fine, I couldn’t help but feel like I was trapped in some dumb scene from Highlander 2, where Katana’s lackeys inform him that MacLeod is going to die of old age on Earth anyway, making the whole assassination totally pointless.

In short: space pussy.

Even Data is getting laid by Tasha Yar 2nd episode into the whole series since Farpoint is a 2 parter. Episode after that one Yar is on a George Floyd planet fighting to the death over BBC.

At the time it really slipped by many that they basically had to invent time travel and time ships to undo what the DEI crews did 500 years prior. I'd take my chances on DS9 with the bisexual Cardassian tailor/assassin.

so is Star Trek, but 3 seasons and WoM is a motherfucker, its too bad Seth didn't think up a way to syndicate it to cable networks, that would have made more fans than anything else. his entire empire is built around the fact that syndication was cheap but led to huge merch opportunities and fans joining on when new episodes came out of his original shows.
The Orville was a FOX show, then when Disney acquired FOX Seth left and signed a deal with NBC (he probably didn't want to work for Disney). The show moved to Hulu, then Disney also acquired Hulu and fucked with the programing. They have finally greenlit a 4th season and the production might have started recently.

overall i wouldn't say the show is cynical either, if anything its more of a bridge, like Enterprise but for personalities, the characters grow into becoming the professional types you see being in charge of first rate ships like the Enterprise, they even say it in the pilot, the captain only got the job because they need someone to fill the position. you're seeing a lower ship captain becoming the picard type little by little, same with the crew.
Exactly. The crew of the Orville is not made of the best of the best, they are just normal people in one of the many ships of the Union. We see them evolve season after season.
It's a real shame that this IP isn't allowed to grow, I would have loved to see a bunch of spin-offs.

The Redenbacher
It's basically just an off-brand Ferengi spin-off; I'd watch the shit out of it.
Plus, ya know, we might finally get to find out what happened to Quark's daughter...

I felt like Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons saying "You claim it is the "Star Trek Best Episode collection" but it contains on it's front cover a picture of Julian Bashir"

I know some fans absolutely hate Bashir but tbh I quite like him

I actually watched the video and its a Japanese DVD with 3 episodes. One from TNG, one from DS9 and the other Voyager. The DS9 episode is the one where Bashir and O'brien get stuck on that planet with the stranded Jem'Hadar running out of ketracel-white

Still I never knew these Japanese DVD's existed till the YouTube algorithm did something useful for once

Bashir isn't a bad character per se, but Siddig didn't become a good actor until about five seasons in.

I still want to know his opinion on the latest nillium alloy tennis racket.

I had completely forgot that Bashir was in that weird DS9 crossover episode of TNG. Something about it feel so wrong, especially since they tried to give him Data-like abilities post-genetic reveal.

It was originally supposed to be Dax but there were scheduling issues.

Though I do think it's kind of fitting that the doctor, Bashir, finds it fascinating how much Data imitates a human.

If anything this episode gets better post gene-messing reveal because then Bashir's fascinations take on an extra layer. Here's someone built superior - but they don't have to cover up and is celebrated by the Federation.

It's one of the reasons the Enterprise retcon that Soong's family were into genetic enhancements and then becoming disillusioned and going into robotics is one I really approve it. It even makes Bashir and Data distant cousins if you think about it.

His character in season one was this supposed Don Juan type. The thing he zeroed in on was Data’s charm, like it was the only thing worth noticing.

Dax and Julian were miscast from the jump. You can see why they reshaped those characters.

Was it only for the Japanese market? I kind of remember before the dark times (JJ Abrams), CBS or Paramount used to make DVD compilations, like "every Borg episode on TNG", etc.

Before DVDs every episode of DS9 and TNG were available on VHS. I spent an entire summer in a rural cabin for work and found them all in a pawn shop in town. I got nearly episode of TNG and DS9 on VHS for $30 because the shop owner couldn't sell them. Blu-Rays are nice and all but TNG and DS9 are at their comfiest being played on a VHS using composite cables.

I WANT TO MAKE YOU! DO IT BITCH! DO IT YOU FUCKING PUSSY!
Sorry for the delay. I knew where the case was but the disc had been swapped with a weird al one. I finally located my copy.

Here be Patrick Stewart's cowboy album.

Sounds like S1 Justice.
I'm not surprised I don't remember this. Most of S1 was really forgettable.

Unfortunately this is just mediocre. It should be so godawfully horrible it's actually fun. But nope. I guess it was for charity.

My unironic favorite of all the utterly ridiculous shit the TOS actors did in terms of other media was this obvious choice:
I wouldn't call it actually good, but it's enjoyable. Sort of. Depending on how autistic you are.

The problem was TNG wasn't ultimately that kind of purely episodic show where you could have an episode written by Harlan Ellison and then an episode written by Robert Bloch or by one of the regulars like Gerrold or Fontana, and they weren't necessarily very closely connected in theme or overarching story.

TNG turned more into a nerd soap opera with story arcs, and while that ultimately worked, it really wasn't working in S1. I know I was considering tuning out but then S2 slowly grew on me.
