Saddened that I missed seeing whatever this madness was.
Interviewer: “Speaking on that episode 5, uh… this is going to be held after episode 5. Did we get… is that new dialogue from Avery Brooks at the end of that episode? Or is that taken from Deep Space Nine?”
Kurtzman: “It is.”
Landau added: “It’s actually neither. It’s, with Avery’s very generous permission, we were able to use a piece of spoken-word poetry that he recorded himself.”

But Data has Riker’s horndog dossier memorized. His "farmer shooting at coyotes" subroutine kicks in: "Commander, I am aware of your historical pattern of being a sex pest." Will's reputation precedes him even among androids. :story:
Imagine if seeing Riker flirt with Lal drove Data to experience anger like in "Descent".
"Come on mr Brooks, you just read these 10 lines into the phone right now and we'll wire you a hundred thousands."
"And then I talk about flying cars, right?"
" beam up HER can-. her SWEET SWEET can-."
Hopefully he doesn't think Coolsville sucks.

Held out until Paramount cut him a check for some beat poetry that has jack to do with Trek. Extremely on-brand.

Oh, it's from Elon Musk making fun of it... Trekkie xirs, I don't feel so good.

It's actually good that Musk made fun of it. I bet they regret name-dropping him several times in STD.

Good for Brooks to get some free money for zero effort, but isn't that the saddest option from the producers point of view? There's nothing wrong with using archive footage (if it makes sense in-universe) or bringing back an actor to record new lines, but using some completely unrelated pre-existing audio? That's something you'd expect some random fan editor with no other options to do, not a professional studio. No one involved went "Hey, this makes us look pretty pathetic"?

:story: Oh my god, it’s been what, 26 years? And I still have every line of those dumb commercials lodged in my brain. Random guy yelling at a Honda Civic like he's a street preacher, accusing traffic of fraud.

What makes those ads great is that they're so raw, none of this modern “haha isn’t it funny that I, a celebrity, am acknowledging I am washed up and debasing myself to you, the pigs." He's playing it like Captain Ahab.

Brooks also has just a wonderful voice, I could listen to him read the phone book.

Bravo on Brooks getting a payday with his spoken word poetry though, seems incredibly on brand for him.

Shatner in The Captains is like, “So Avery, when did you first realize you were insane,” and Avery's grinning at the cameraman like, "I’m not even pretending to answer this nigga's questions."

Mind you, Shatner is way too wrapped up in himself to interview anybody. “Kate Mulgrew, as a woman captain, did you..." That’s why Avery and Kate are the only good interviews. They keep drifting off. And Shatner’s like, “Okay but..."

Compare that to Stewart: "William Shatner, who invented Star Trek, and also Kirk was my sexual Awakening....” And Bakula, too. “Golly, Bill, I'm honored to be here."

Avery Brooks is one of those actors who could read Go Dog Go and turn it into one of the best audio dramas of the year.
