And this is also why nuTrek in all its forms fucking sucks: the people involved don't give a fuck. You don't always need some basement dwelling rivet-counter to obsessively pore through memory alpha to ensure everything is 100% accurate but you need to at least pretend to care about what made the series so loved in the first place.
Allegedly, the Buffy reboot was cancelled because someone in charge said he wasn't familiar with the show and never watched it. I get that he might have not been a fan, but least he could have done was to check the pilot of the show and random episodes to know what it was about. There is no way a TV executive shouldn't know how popular Buffy was and still is and how they still have a fandom.

As you say, they just don't care.

But at least they were wise enough to cancel it.

>the Starfleet headquarters is in San Francisco
>the Federation starships usually have American names
>usual accent of humans on Federation starships is USA-ish
>musics and holodeck programs are centered on American history
>the first warp flight and first contact done by a guy in Montana

It's because a ton of people bullshitted their way through school. It works when your teachers want to give you a passing grade and get federal money, but it doesn't work with an established franchise. What these people do is they think "oh, we'll just do the current thing and people will like it" or they decide to use the show to self-insert. Instead of doing a little homework, they make it up as they go because that's what they were allowed to do their entire lives.

Between this and the Blade movie, why is it so hard for executives to understand a concept as simple as "Cool people murdering vampires is fucking awesome"?

This is why I'm psyched for They Will Kill You. While the villains aren't vampires, it still looks like a straightforward action movie about a cool lady murdering people. That's all you need to get butts in seats.

Don't forget how some of the most well-respected captains in Starfleet (Archer, Pike, Kirk, Picard) are white guys.

The best captain is a black guy from Louisiana.

Anyone who disagrees that Sisko is the best captain is a fucking retard. Don't get me wrong: Archer, Pike, Kirk, and Picard are all great captains, but Sisko is the best.

I’ve already said this like three times in this exact thread and I can feel my soul leaving my body, so I’ll keep it brief: they themselves don’t watch anything. Screens are for the little people and for extracting value. Their kids are probably not allowed to look at a screen.

So when they try to focus-group what counts as “fun,” the only media they consume is like PGA and financial news. Did you see that clip with Marc Andreessen proudly announcing he has no inner life, like he’s revealing a new productivity hack, and the interviewer comparing him to some digital-era Sam Walton? That’s the model? And those are the people deciding what counts as fun for everyone else.
I see that a certain captain is missing from that list…

Janeway stranded her whole crew in another quadrant so she could break the Prime Directive. As much as I like Kate Mulgrew, the writers for Voyager were nu-Trek levels of stupid.
Voyager's frustrating because it's bad episodes are the worst in the franchise, barring any streaming entries. But, unlike TNG where most of its duds are in that first season, they're spread throughout the show. There are some really good episodes in Vogager, but its so rough getting to them.

I wanted to watch all of Voyager, but I watched it with my wife. We got to the Amelia Earhart episode and my wife said, I shit you not, "this show is too girl-power-y. Can we watch something else?" She liked TNG, DS9, and ENT, but couldn't stand Voyager because of Janeway. I didn't like Voyager enough to finish it myself.

Unlike DS9 you don’t gotta watch every episode of Voyager to get the good shit. Just hit the good episodes in whatever order, you miss nothing. Aside from Tom and B’Elanna banging, everyone’s the same at the start and the end.

Off the dome: "Meld", "Night", "Nemesis", maybe "Remember", maybe "Memorial".

Every other “classic” episode is just Jeri Ryan and Bob Picardo front and center.

Poor Kim. 😥

Warlord, Cold Fire, The Thaw, Nothing Human, Drive, the Borg-lore episodes interspersed from Scorpion through Endgame. The Hirogen episodes were all great.

At least they went with their strengths. Beltran is a plank. One was good fun. edit: Latent Image was phenomenal, and Mulgrew trio'd with Picardo and Ryan. The episodes where Picardo plays against himself in Dr. Zimmerman, The Swarm and Life Line, were fun to watch. The supporting characters were featured well in those episodes too.

A captain so based (that he punched Picard)

So Starfleet gave him a pimp hand ship to smack people around with.

Although the way the episode is worded, it made it sound like he took it--fuck Starfleet.

I still agree with Sisko as best.

It's low-key fucked up that the most positive, human portrayal of a single (widowed) black father suffering through loss, and caring for an elderly parent and a young son is from a science fiction show that's 25 years old.

He doesn't drink heavily, he isn't addicted to pot, he doesn't have five baby mommas, he holds down a job, and has normal co-workers. I'm going to skip all the other positives and even a negative or two here--He's human-flaws and all.

He's simply a wholesome father figure--how come we don't have these in Star Trek anymore? I think in nu-trek, they probably think Sisko isn't based enough so we got Burned Ham.

Not the "Captain" Burnham you're looking for.

He did what needed to be done. Did he poison an entire planet to spite another guy? Yes. Did he also demonstrate that he wasn't fucking around with the Maquis anymore, and wasn't going to play tap dance games with them? Yes. He punched Q because he did not fuck around. He mined the wormhole because he was not fucking around. He orchestrated the murder of a Romulan Senator to trick the Romulans into the Dominion War because he was not fucking around.

There is a certain directness to Sisko which made him more believable. Picard and the Enterprise crew always found the right answer and wrapped everything up in a pretty red bow. That works for an episodic format, but it gets old after a while. There were times Sisko failed, or his success came at significant cost. This doesn't even get into him being a positive male role model, which the quoted poster laid out nicely.

Honorable mentions: Edward Jellico and Benjamin Maxwell. They'd rape, kill and pillage their way through Cardassian space if they were only given half a chance.

I've always heard that Avery had a decent amount of influence over how Sisko was portrayed and that he wanted to give a good performance as a black role model. I know he was very invested into the whole old school Black Power stuff, so it makes sense.

Benjamin Maxwell.
Did nothing wrong. You can never trust a Cardie.
