Oh damn you. For a minute I thought you were saying that J.G. Hertzler was dead!

Jeff Combs looked like he was enjoying himself so much on Star Trek, regardless of the role.
Combs is easily my favorite recurring Trek actor (even though I wouldn't say that any of the characters he's played are my favorite recurring character. I'd probably say that's either early to mid Dukat or Garek.)

I heard a rumor recently that if Enterprise had gotten a 5th season, Shran would have become a series regular, possibly even joining the Enterprise crew. It's a shame that didn't happen, because if anybody ever deserved to play a series regular and didn't get to, it was Combs.

I haven't given Enterprise it's fair try. I watched a whole season with episodes here and there. I found none of the cast really likable beside Plox.

It sure looks a helluva look better now with Discovery and Star Trek Picard being out there.

As for Combs I totally have to agree with you on there, he's more Trek than some regulars as far as I'm concerned.

It's alright. (ish). It's just a bit basic and unambitious in terms of character and plot. I'm still hung up on the ship's doctor ordering the second in command to give someone massages in her quarters, even after she protests that's too intimate. The occasional adolescent wank-fantasy is kind of off-putting. When they actually give people something to work with (like in the Cogenitor episode) it's nice to see the cast show off their acting skills. By far the biggest weakness in the show is the writing.

That reminds me of a bonkers theory I heard a while back where all the various Trek characters that Jefrey Combs has played over the years are either a founder spy, or Weyoun himself.

Reminds me of when I used to watch both Gotham and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and had this head-cannon that they were actually the same universe and Carol Kane was the same character in both. There was really nothing too much you had to ignore to make it possible, either. If Penguin had been there sipping tea with his "mom" one day when Kimmy came home, it would have made my year.

I genuinely have no idea what you're talking about right now...

Carol Kane played Penguin's mother on the Batman prequel series "Gotham" - a slightly batty old woman who lived in a big apartment block. On The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt TV series she played Kimmy's landlady - a slightly batty old woman who lived in a big apartment block. It only required a couple of minimal tweaks for Ms. Kapelput (Gotham) to be also Ms. Kaushtupper and you had a suddenly wonderful expanded universe. Weirdly, Kimmy Schmidt as the bizarrely strong escaped cult member would fit in superbly well in the Batman universe.

I am a huge Batman fan, and I actually watched the first episode of Gotham... but I immediately realized that the show wasn't for me. And I haven't seen another episode since then. It's totally cool if you still liked it though.

I watched the first season. It got a bit grim after that but I was assured it picked up again in Season three but I never returned. I liked Penguin and Riddler, though.

Watching through DS9 and was surprised when nigga was used in the episode Far Beyond the Stars. No fucking way that would happen today.

In more ways than one. That moment is really an achievement. While its clear Jake's actor hesitated a little saying the line, it came off as otherwise natrual. So not only did they get away with profanity on a Trek episode, it fit the scene and of course the overall story. Compare the infamous "Oh.... Shit!" from Generations or the mean-spirited "Shut the fuck up!" from Picard. If they tried to say nigger on a modern Trek show, it'd be in some horrendously cringeworthy way at best. And also devoid of all the impact the DS9 one had.

Spent half the episode wondering if it was a cross-over of some kind

In your defense, Enterprise was rather notorious for doing this. The Borg and Ferengi episodes were complete wastes of time.

occasional adolescent wank-fantasy

Enterprise was also rather notorious for this as well.

So I'm watching (via patron early preview) SFDebris' review of the short trek "trouble with edward" and BOY is he ripping it a new one. I don't know if Chuck is aware of Major Grin (with as busy as his schedule is, Chuck admits he doesn't have much time to watch anything so it's possible) but he is really running down a lot of the same avenues like comparing this to Reg Barclay's episode.

Will definitely post as soon as its public.

Good to know that he's finally waking up. He has been way too kind with STD.

Yeah "Trouble with Edward" was truly where STD's staff truly showed they had no idea what Star Trek was about. Barclay grew to become a series favorite because of how relatable the character was.

The crowning moment is at the end. When that children in captain's clothing is asked what happened. And after one of her crewmen died under her command she sighs and says "He was an idiot"

A man that died under your command and you call him an idiot.

It's a fucking disgrace!

I dunno... the close of S1 where he keeps ranting about them going out of their way to save the equivalent of Emperor Palpatine was pretty harsh IMO.

That episode didn't have any explosions or torture porn in it so it definitely would not have happened today.

The only modern thing in DS9 was that episode where Sisko didn't want to go to a Las Vegas Holodeck program because it was historically racist against colored people.

Followed by Cassidy telling him, "look, it's just a game, calm your tits." 'Memba when people were sane about this stuff, both in and out of fiction?

Pepperidge Farm 'membas.

Yeah but the real joke is that historically... it wasn't quite like that. When even TVTropes is saying you go too far...

Artistic License – History: Kind of a bizarre one but notable given Sisko's speech. Specifically, the reality was slightly Lighter and Softer than Sisko believes. The Rat Pack boycotted casinos which wouldn't allow Sammy Davis Junior to gamble in them and thus got many casinos to repeal their policies regarding blacks. Which is notable given Vic is an in-universe Expy for Sinatra, and he's always been nice to Kasidy. Also, segregation was ended in the Vegas strip in 1960 but the program is set in 1962. He is, however, correct on how a black person would have been treated in the majority of the country at that time.

Sisko could learn a lot from Uhura.

I loved how he was immediately admonished about being a spastic faggot over that.
