DS9 had a weird version of Squash that Bashir and O'Brien played that one episode. Non-Sports related they were also smart enough to not overplay or over explain Dabo or Tongo, but thats only because they were close enough to regular roulette and a playing card game. Tongo I think was also the most fleshed out as well, where it almost made it to the point of making sense as a game,.

I'm mixed.

If the game is a major focus of your story, then you need to have rules so the viewers can stay invested. Quintet isn't a great movie, but the game is interesting. Quidditch is a pretty shitty game, explicitly designed so Harry can win it all by himself.

If your film takes place in a radically different environment, odds are that people are going to exploit the environment and the game can be used to show it off. Offhand I don't think anyone's ever done a game that could only work in zero gravity in film, but it would be neat to see someone try. [Jamie and Adam did come up with an interesting idea with a ball designed to curve when thrown.]

If it's just something in the background try to make the game at least plausible so the fans don't have to work so hard. Best example here is probably Last Jedi which showed transparent playing cards, and the dumbass assigned to write the rules of the game came up with a poker variant, which doesn't work with transparent cards.

I always wondered if that 3D chess game from TOS can actually be played.
Aren't there rules for it? At least some fans made rules, I'd assume.

It's a bit of a problem. You want some distinct looking games and taking chess to another dimension is a neat idea, but it's more of a design choice than a logical evolution of chess.

Yes, you play it like regular chess. My sisters ex husband had a special edition set and we used to play it all the time.

This is why I like it when future games are kept vague and mysterious, or at least never have their rules explained to you. Even with physical sports, you can just show the actors doing something vague with a lightshow on in the background and have cutaways to other characters watching the action when it seems like something important happens or is about to happen. It doesn't break the immersion by looking stupid.
In the commentary for the show, the producers outright said they tried to always add confusion to the sport if anybody started figuring it out.

You can get a 3d chess set and play. Though to make it work I think they end making it less "3d" than you may think. The battle boards are... weird.

Stunning and brave.

Obviously, as actors in a science fiction brand that became a cult for nerds and is currently being butt fucked into oblivion by corporate shills, they can be considered respectable authorities on political discourse in this country.

There will come a time when this kind of political sperging will piss off enough people from watching these shows that they succumb to bad ratings. There will come a time where being this political will be a death sentence to shows.

And I hope it will be soon. I'm so fucking done with these Hollywood cocksuckers lecturing me from their villas within gated communities about social issues that they have never experienced - or have contributed as long as it was beneficial to them. Fuck these people, fuck their opinions, fuck their shows, fuck whatever drivel they dare spit out in my direction. There is absolutely no respect left for these sell-outs.

The NBA is finding this out now. LeBron in the finals again facing his old team, a premiere franchise returns to the spotlight...and nobody fucking cares. Nobody. Record setting low ratings. It ain't all Coronavirus related either, though that has to be a part of it. The NBA went "hard in the paint" for the BLM bullshit and now they're reaping the rewards.

Star Trek and other properties be warned, there is not an infinite budget to your bullshit.
