yeah I've often heard it's less terrible than the other nutreks
but that's like being the most charming child rapist

as for Five... eh. I don't really hate it that much. Yeah there's issues but it does important rock climbing and god punching from TOS that had gone neglected in the movies
Star Trek V would have been a good 1 hour episode

If you cut out everything before Sybok hijacks the Enterprise

Start in media res

Captain's log. Stardate blah blah blah. The Enterprise has been hijacked by Sybok, a mad Vulcan. He has brainwashed key officers and members of my crew and is taking the ship towards the great barrier at the center of the galaxy. He claims to be following a message from God.

He is also Spock's brother.

*TOS music swells*

Maybe 2 parter if they could come up with some good ideas for what happens when they reach Sha Ka Ree other than "God shows up, Kirk gets spicy, action, FIN"

What I liked most about Seven of Nine (okay, second-most :) ) was the way she didn't think of herself as suddenly freed from mind-slavery but wanted to go back and actually argued with Janeway not only passionately but convincingly that the Collective was good. Janeway was unquestionably abusive towards Seven of Nine, denying her freedom and a right to choose.

maybe their animosity bled through, apparently they both hated each other on set.

I've heard conflicting rumors about that. The most common is that Kate Mulgrew felt as though Ryan was usurping her role and that her occasional defiance of Janeway's orders undermined her authority. Which to be fair to Mulgrew is correct in my perception, but I actually liked that detail about Seven's character. Its been played down in recent years, so maybe its just an offshoot of the infamous Shatner-Nimoy rivalry on the set of TOS.

Maybe I'm Mandela effecting it

But as a kid when Voyager was brand new I remember reading in TV Guide or something that maintaining discipline was something the show was going to explore aka Paramount told them to write that because they thought Trekkies would be interested in that. And they wanted their core audience interested

What with a Maquis first officer and being 70 years away from the Federation and all "at maximum warp" :o

Don't see where this Stranger in a Strange Land character not adhering to Starfleet discipline all the time should have been a big shock to Mulgrew

Jeri Ryan got all the attention for her hot cyborg soft dominatrix with the big boobs look and more attention than Kate Mulgrew had ever received for her performances as Captain Janeway. Captain would be a rare person if her gears weren't a little grinded

At least that means her Janeway won't be on Picard.

Jeri Ryan was also banging Brannon Braga and joking on the set that so many Seven stories were because she was sleeping with the boss.

The real victim here is Tim Russ. A real trekkie, with many good Tuvok episodes, then Seven comes along and he turns into Vulcan version of Mayweather.

Tuvok is easily one of the strongest characters on Voyager, its just easy to miss that when he barely gets any screentime.

I never knew that. Or even that it had been rumoured. That's interesting.

Thing with Seven of Nine, is that you come for the pneumatic figure and the skin-tight outfits, but you stay for the acting. They lucked out with Jeri Ryan - they found someone who was physically gorgeous but still took the time and effort to learn how to act.

At least that means her Janeway won't be on Picard.
Shame. I might actually watch that trashfire then. I've said it before and I'll probably continue to bore people by saying it in the future, but Janeway would make a phenomenal villain in that show to put opposite Picard. She'd have you half-way agreeing with her and seeing her point of view right up until the end.

Tuvok was the best Vulcan in Trek. He actually portrayed the Vulcan emotional lockdown and didn't just use it as something to be turned on in an episode just so that five minutes later we could get a story about him being emotional. I mean, that's not just the actor, it's the writing as well. But he was far more convincing as a Vulcan than T'Pol (much as I like her) or any other one, except perhaps Spock who kind of defined it.

Yeah, I doubt many of the cast were happy about that. But I heard Mulgrew was good friends with Jennifer Lien and was pissed off that she was fired.

BTW, Kiwis may be interested that Jeri Ryan had a crazed LOLcow stalker named Marlon Estacio Pagtakhan.

I remember he spammed forums and newsgroups under the name "Omar" screaming about how he'll lose his virginity to Jeri. Later he got caught stalking wrestlers and challenging them to fights:
It looks like he's unsuccessfully suing all the media outlets that reported on him.

I think my biggest issue with Tuvok is that he comes across a little too much like Spock, so it largely just feels like familiar territory. Tim Russ plays it VERY well, and I am convinced the dude is a Vulcan. But whenever he gets a spotlight episode, I can't help but feel like it was a leftover Spock script that never got made.

You mean the Orville. The Orville feels more like Star Trek than anything out right now.
I just finished up the Orville. It's not perfect, but it comes really close to capturing something that feels like a mixture of TOS & TNG with fart jokes. It's funny, they got cucked in the late 90s/early 2000s by Galaxy Quest doing Star Trek better than the last couple of TNG movies, and they're they're getting cucked now by a fucking guy who makes fart joke cartoons doing something that feels more like Star Trek than the new Star Trek shows.

It is funny how actually liking Star Trek helps when making Star Trek.

Yep. It's a bit more irreverent than Star Trek, but it's fine.

The main criticism leveled at The Orville, seems to be that it can't decide whether it wants to be "Star Trek" or "parody of Star Trek".
But I think that after a few episodes, it finds a balance that works well enough.

EDIT: typo

I said this in the Orville Appreciation thread, but the Orville is only ever bad when it tries to remake good to classic episodes like The Wounded and For the World is Hollow and I have Touched the Sky. When what they should be doing in terms of remakes is take bad episodes and try to fix them. How about The Outrageous Lamarr where his ex-girlfriends with the two heads come to Lamarr and demand that he's the father of their child and the sisters are arguing over who he was thinking about when he came inside them?

Which skirts around the best part of The Orville, the girly, touchy-feeling relationship stuff. What makes season 2 work? The relationship between Claire and I-SAK. What made the Holodeck episode with Tim Russ in it work? Gordon falling in love with a hologram. What made that episode with Locar, the really tall Moclan, work? He fell in love with Keyali. That's when the show has its own identity. The science fiction stuff is a means to get to its heart.

Seven got off easy considering what she did to Tuvix.

Weren't those the days?

The Critical Drinker is having a discussion about Star Trek V (aka one of the best TOS movies) with Doomcuck, Nerdrotic and AZ.

"In an interview with Michelle Paradise, she stated that Gray's storyline will be followed up in season 4 and "That storyline is incredibly important to us." She expanded on that in a separate interview stating "Representation matters. It matters to see a version of yourself on screen. It matters there are non-binary and transgender characters. It matters that there is a Black woman in the captain's chair. It matters that there is a gay couple on our show. We will continue to do that for the show, and the world we live in, but also, to honor the Star Trek legacy. And to be super clear, we will pay that moment off in Season 4. Gray will be seen. That promise will be paid off"

Oh man I can't wait
