How do you think Starfield will turn out?

Is it possible they intentionally broke everyone's Skyrim mods as revenge for calling Starfield the piece of shit is is?
This would be funny, but the seeds of the new creation club have been known about for a bout a year now through them testing things on Steam branches. It was definitely in the works before Starfield released.

I think the fact Emil has to make a big point that game development is hard and has a LOT of people working on it is hilarious. That's been one of the main thoughts as to why Starfield is the way it is. That it had too many fucking developers and nobody with any vision to guide them.

He just doesn't fucking get it.

I think both Todd and Emil are equally retarded and contempt with how they run things.
If anything actually changes it will come from Microsoft pressure. Imagine spending 7.5B on the Skyrim developer and they deliver this game, and everyone is starting to assume that Skyrim 2 will be another piece of shit if nothing is done. It can't be a good look for the gaming division at MS.
Some Quake game (August 2021, Machine Games) It's literally just a map pack lol
Deathloop (September 2021, Arkane Lyon)
Ghostwire: Tokyo (March 2022, Tango Gameworks)
Quake Champions (moved from early access hell in August 2022, id Software)
Hi-Fi Rush (January 2023, Tango Gameworks)
Redfall (May 2023, Arkane Austin)
Starfield (September 2023, Bethesda Game Studios)
And whatever ESO crap Zenimax Online shits out
I'm not counting anything FO76 because no one plays that game
Nice $7.5B, Microsoft. The only one of those that people think highly of is Hi-Fi Rush. Everything else is mid at best. I'll buy five copies of Starfield right now if they release Starfield sales numbers broken down by platform and gamepass.
I'd agree with you but I think Microsoft is even more retarded than Bethesda considering they're the ones who actually spent the money.

They very clearly intended Starfield to be Skyrim 2 where people would continue to mod and play it for a decade.

That's not fucking happening which is probably why they're shitting their pants so hard.

This is some industrial strength cope.

For starters he doesn't actually seem to address any of the complaints. Like, at all. He is doing a lot of seething about the hate he is getting but he has 0 arguments to push back with, neither a "actually it is not shit" nor a "your arguments are wrong".

For another he keeps trying to play the "game development is a big thing with a huge team" which feels like throwing the blame at other people, which only make it look worse because it sounds like he is off loading complaints to non-writers for his shit writing and ignores how some of the best Bethesda stories came from non-writers making their quests in Morrowind.

Finally, he has no excuse to be this shit given he has been on the industry for something like 25 years now. If this was his first big writing job it might not have been as bad but fucker has a history with writing garbage story-lines that actively undermine and sabotage the games they are attached to. His stupid bullshit on Fallout 4 made it one of the worst story-lines on that entire series, so full of retarded decisions it became a complete meme how no one gave a fuck about their own kid in the game. He has had almost a decade to improve that, and he managed to make Starfield WORSE than Fallout 4 somehow.
The problem with Fagliarulo is that he's a linear writer, and he doesn't like how open-world video games sequence-break the very linear stories he wants to tell, so instead, he puts in the bare minimum of effort into story beats that can be safely bypassed. You can tell he doesn't like dynamic, multi-path, hypertext-style storytelling and should really be writing super-linear walking simulators that are practically interactive movies, because that's obviously what he wants to do. David Cage type shit. Instead, he's saddled with trying to write stories with branching paths like Deus Ex and flailing helplessly, completely out of his element. You can sense this snobbery in that talk he gave.

"Why should I bother? They're just going to 360 noscope backflip prop fly over that wall and never hear my meticulously-crafted dialogue."

Someone with that attitude shouldn't be in gamedev, period.

now that im thinking about it the only bethesda thing that i have ever enjoyed was fallout new vegas and that was fucking obsidian lmao. is this another bioware situation were we realize that they fucking suck all along?
I mean, BioWare actually did make some good stuff once upon a time. AFAIK the worst complaint about Dragon Age: Origins is that dude in your camp shilling BioWare's DLC to you, and then of course we all remember the OG Mass Effect. But things started going downhill fast right after that.

(Before you ask, DA: O used the same engine as NWN/KOTOR, override folder for mods and all. Yes, it really was that long ago.)

Starfield felt like a botched MMO pruned into a Single Player game in a panic. Everything fun was behind a gate behind another gate that only made gameplay sense in the context of paying gemstones to remove. Research made no sense at all, to then lock designs behind Skills, and then availability of item behind Player Level too. That's the kind of grindy bullshit bad MMO designers love. The whole experience reminds me of that odd "you could become the best at cooking hamburgers on your server!" Fallout 76 bullshit: you are left uncertain as to whether any of the developers have ever played any videogame, let alone their own. Stuff like that demonstrates a fundamental disconnect between developer focus and gameplay, and with Starfield it tore the game apart.

There is no way "150 employees" played this game from beginning to end and said "I could do that 10 times over and never tire of clearing generic red enemies from industrial facilities to collect a massive pile of secondhand weapons to drop into a kiosk to accumulate credits that I can't purchase anything meaningful with!" No fucking way. They know Starfield is trash, an alpha build at very best.

Emil Pagliarulo (Starfield writer, Bethesda mainstay) is now the latest Bethesda employee to have a big melty on Twitter about how players are shitting on Starfield.
Emil is of course famous within the Bethesda-sphere due to the following appearance as a keynote speaker at the STORY conference, which is a ~40-minute long explanation about why his writing is intentionally shit because people who play video games are too retarded to appreciate good writing (unless it's New Vegas, in which case we don't know how Emil is able to reconcile with people not treating that game like they do other Bethesda sandbox), you'll see this sort of player antagonism is a recurring theme with Emil because if there's a problem to be found, then it most certainly is a you problem.

here he explains that at Bethesda they don't do design documentation (lol), and instead work by the tenement of "K.I.S.S." (Keep It Simple, Stupid) which should explain why all Bethesda games are such lukewarm puddles of shit and why TESVI will certainly be another offering of middling slop shot straight out of Todd Howard's cock.
I can't decide if it's better or worse that he chose to vaguepost about the complainers instead of directly defending his game. It probably would've been better to continue saying nothing at all.

I think I said it in another thread, but more and more I'm starting to think that they were wanting to pull a Fallout 76 with a single player game. They don't want modders to work on it or fix it, they want to sell people the game piecemeal through microtransactions and updates. That's the truth of the "10 year plan"

Okay Emil, I won't blame the poor programmers or environment artists who had to put in 50 hour work weeks to get this shit released and didn't intend to release a subpar game, in fact I haven't seen many people blaming them at all. Instead I'll blame the dumbasses in charge who thought the writing in this game was the hottest shit and refused to change engines so that loading screens wouldn't be a major issue in a space flight game (but remember "there were technical problems we just couldn't get past"). And as the lead writer, what do you know, the first one falls on you.

If he's going to bitch about how people just don't understand Bethesda's inner workings then maybe he should shed some light on what people are so wrong about. The reason people point to those "random speeches taken out of context" is because its not hard to draw a throughline from the stupid shit he says to the actual end product. Emil can't even fathom that people would try and infer how Bethesda works from the games and the insights he himself has given.

This is insanely gay. If you're not trying to change anyone's mind then why the fuck are you making a 15-part tweet telling people that they're wrong?

That tweet really says a lot, doesn't it?

Starfield allegedly had the biggest launch of any Bethesda game. It had numerous "good" review scores. Despite dropping off on Steam, it's been said to be a top played game on Xbox.

Yet here, Emil says "even if the game isn't up to par". Yeah, I get that Starfield has become youtube/twitter fodder, but why should he care if they supposedly have the sales, have the reviews and supposedly have the player numbers on Xbox allegedly? People have been shitting on Skyrim for half a decade now, and we've never gotten one of these pissbaby shitter tirades.

This entire thing, to me, makes it sound like Emil knows it's not up to par and just doesn't want to admit it to himself.

What is his point exactly? Yes making games is hard, no the customer should not and does not care. I pay my hard earned cash for an entertainment product and the product sucks dick. It's that simple.

If Starfield was an ambitious game that failed to live up to expectations or was just very flawed then I'd be less hard on the game but Starfield is just lazy and bland. It's worse even because Bethesda has the resources to make a really amazing game.

They proclaimed it as a modders paradise in pre release material only for Xedit to show that this is actually a fucking disaster for modding because of how the system ID's work. Mods will conflict if you add more than one mod and don't add a third mod to manually force compatibility. And even then it'd only work for those two particular mods, because of how ID's work now with their cascading effects on other objects/entities/etc. and it's why modders think the game is too boring to warrant the effort they're going to put into modding it. Of course, creation club mods will work, since the game will have preloads to fix it if they work for Bethesda, one would assume. Making the modding architecture downright hostile only to give a skeleton key if you sell your mod to them is very Zenimax of them

Well Todd has been obsessed with creating an endless game since Skyrim at the very least. Radiant quests were the solution at the time. They want to endlessly repeat the Skyrim success by making a game they can milk forever, but they can't because they keep fucking up and misunderstanding the core appeal of that game, and what keeps people coming back.

Rather than creating a game with more depth, more hand crafted content, and even better modding tools, they dumb things down, use proc gen, and delay/sabotage modding at every opportunity.
Starfield is just lazy and bland.
Lazy, bland, and ugly. If Baldur's Gate showed us anything it's that people want to fuck beautiful companions. I think making everyone a disgusting brown monkey hurt the game more than anyone will actively admit.

Didn't Emil call out Andreja as his personal waifu or something? I know he got a house Va'Ruun tattoo on his wrist now, which is especially stupid since house Va'ruun plays into TWO quests. One third of a single vanguard quest, and the last third of Andreja's companion quest
