Starfield - Bethesda's new space IP: will probably be full of fun and easily trackable bugs

How do you think Starfield will turn out?

It's weird how saccarine and sanitized this universe is.

Everyone is super nice and polite and even the bad guys are mildly passive aggressive at their meanest.

Even when violence does happen it's completely bloodless MCU combat and then when it's over some npc goes "whoa that was wild, now how about some space ice cream?"

Skyrim was downright grim in tone and even Fallout 4 despite being a lot brighter and more cartoony held onto some of the grit and grime.

This though? I have genuinely no idea why this game is rated M. There's no blood and gore, no sexual content, there's barely even any profanity.
You can't even strip down corpses.

At some point during gen 7, the industry decided that Serious Games For Serious Gamers needed that M rating to be taken seriously, regardless of whether it deserved it or not. The ESRB is toothless and vestigial. Parents clearly don't care if their kids play M rated games and with everything being distributed digitally, it matters even less. This falls in line with with entertainment media in general being unwilling to be obscene or tackle edgy themes unless it's done in the most kosher way possible.

...unless the loot system decided that you could get their clothes and even then, it's not everything, it's either a helmet or a suit.
Another detail that is absent in the game: your clothes don't get wet when you walk in the water. I don't want to state the current year but come on...

That fucking mission where you have to rescue Black Science Man... The game really doesn't want you to kill them. It's insane.

the rewards in general were pretty fucking shit for the DLC, when every item in fallout 3's dlc was worth buying the DLC for.
I mean there’s the Sierra Madre vending machine back in Elijah’s bunker that you can get as many stimpaks, weapon repair kits, etc. as you want from given that you probably still have a fuckton of the SM chips, and you get more free chips that respawn regularly in a certain container. It’s kinda gamebreaking, actually.

I've heard someone say "shit" and someone say "fuck" at one point. But you're correct that the language is so tame that I was honestly shocked and did a double take when it happened.

I think the next worst thing I've heard besides those was Sarah saying "God Damn" at some point.

Yeah, I never realized it my first time because I was doing persuasion checks every time I could. In this playthrough I've basically just been killing Pirates because they're fucking pirates. So when I got to that part, I picked the "You're a pirate, this only ends one way" dialogue and then Barret is like "Wait! No! You don't need to kill anymore people!" and then Sarah practically begged me to let her give him money so she could tell him to tell the other pirates to stop bothering Barret.

Like...I don't know. I literally just killed like damn near a dozen pirates just outside this guys thrown together base. I could have seen the logic of "Let's pay them and tell them to tell the other pirates to stop harassing Barret" but after I've killed like grand total 25-30 pirates between the tuotiral and this point I might as well just finish the job. This even more so if you persuaded the FIRST pirate leader to stop harassing Constellation only to have them re-attack the miners and kidnap Barret.

So...not really. Bethesda haters overstate how bad it is, Bethesda lovers ignore how mediocre it is. If you're into it, you're into it. But more than likely you won't be so unless you already have Gamepass it's probably best to pass on it.
The game is absolutely as bad as people make it out to be, if not worse. Fallout 4 exists and does everything Starfield tries to do but better, that's the real killshot here: If F4 didn't exist and the game released maybe 6-8 years ago, then we could simply call it "mediocre". Now, in 2024? No, that's just straight up garbage. The game got an appropriate amount of pushback and the redditors who like it weren't bullied enough. If this was a small indie game, then maybe it wouldn't be as hated, but it's a triple A console exclusive*(also available on PC) so it's treated as such. Note that Outer Worlds didn't get nearly as much hate because people knew it was a smaller sized game with less content, so it was merely ignored by most people rather than becoming a sideshow in a carnival like Starfield has.

So did the update with the vehicles even get released yet? There is no way that wasn't cut content, so I don't see what's taking so long to re-implement it. Not that it's gonna help the game, it will make it arguably worse since more players will notice how dead/small the biomes are before they hit the "go back to your spaceship" invisible wall(maybe 5-2.5 minutes to reach now vs 10 it normally takes on foot). I bet it will be worse than vehicles in Frontier, to make the situation even more humiliating. Hell, not even reskinning Power Armor in the forms of mechs will help it now, there is genuinely nothing new in this game that other Bethesda games haven't done better except for MAYBE ship crafting(which countless other games do better). Why bother coming back as an existing player or buying the game at this point in time if you're a new player?

The lack of evil or even morally grey companions really hurts role-playing here.

Very rarely do I play an outright evil PC but pragmatic mercenary is an archetype I run often in Bethesda games and that's flat out impossible here.

All the human followers have the morality of a good aligned paladin.

Steal - Lose affinity
Start fight - Lose affinity
Murder someone- Lose affinity
Mean dialogue choice- Lose affinity
Ask for extra reward- Lose affinity

They are comically righteous, at least in Fallout 4 if your sole Survivor was more of an asshole you could run Cait or Strong, here you have to run either the boring robot or go it solo.
I think it's very telling that these are the only "real" companions in the game. It either shows how unfinished the game is if only the "good" ones were made and the rest were scrapped, or how delusional Wokethesda has become if they genuinely think there is any moral nuance between any of them. The snake lady is the funniest, you would think she would be a ruthless, a-moral merc or zealot type but she's the same soft urbanite as the rest of the Constellation, and will cry just as easily about almost everything you do(or constantly ask you to have a talk when you're in the middle of a quest about her feelings, like it's a therapy session). It's like seeing a Middle Easterner or Eastern European or someone else from a rather conservative culture come over to California and get turned into a far left activist/degenerate gooner/troon or fag within only a few years there.
Anyways, there is an alternative of sorts: Robot exists and so does the Adoring Fan but apparently you can actually get the generic crew members to follow you as companions as well. They don't offer much dialogue or have any quests like the "proper" companions do, but I would consider that a bonus rather than a flaw with this writing. If you want companions, it's actually recommended to not take the ones that Constellation forces on you and just hire the generic ones you can find across various planets instead, who are for the most part very neutral and just do their job without much fuss(altho it is funny how one of them is an actual troon).

Where as Skyrim, to me, feels like a game that has become propped up by mods, the more I play Starfield the more I find it feels like a bunch of mods thrown together that didn't have a base game as a foundation.
Even if Starfield gets the CK I bet you that the mods will still feel directionless and thrown together, like you said the base game doesn't have a foundation.
There's no blood and gore, no sexual content, there's barely even any profanity.
I really don't understand either. Guns I guess count towards the violence needed to the M rating, maybe at least. There's not a single fucking thing sexual in the game besides maybe the underwear when unequip your clothes, there's romance options but do those really count towards the sexual rating? I hear there's like...one fade to black sex scene which might count for the entire rating. Maybe the drug use also counted towards the M rating, people have grown quite soft after all. It was always a retarded system and always will be, I mean fuck me CP2077 is 17+, so is BG3.
Agreed, no matter what they do it'll be scuffed as fuck and inferior to not only other games but their own games. Best they can do to salvage this is to cut the cord on Starfield and focus their efforts on the cash cows that is the next Fallout and Elder Scrolls games.

I think they're trying to rip off the feel of Star Trek, without understanding the context. Star Trek is Gene Rodenberry's optimistic vision of an enlightened humanity working together to explore the stars, not space cowboy shooter pew pew.

But not only does Bugthesda rip off better things, they even rip off themselves. Like how Kellogg is just a bootleg Jericho with some metal shit strapped on his arm. Or how since the BOS had a latin motto, the UC needs a latin motto too. It gives the game a little class, like airbrushing a rose on the side of a dumpster. Or how the Crimson Cringe and the Gunners both use a skull as their emblem. Ooooh, Spooooky!

1) I didn't see any ground vehicles.
2) This looks like just more of the same.
3) Everyone who called CC content releasing before the CK, advance to go and collect $200.

Um actually, the trailer seemed to imply CC and CK are releasing at the same time, so actually Chud you are wrong.

The fact they showed off the Creation Club and proper modding with shit tier plushies for your bases you never use is peak Bethesda, holy shit.

They released their "big update" two (three?) weeks ago just to release another "big update" two weeks later...and completely break the current mod scene again.

I don't see why this couldn't have released two weeks ago or conversely they couldn't have just release the maps two weeks later.

Well, whatever, hopefully Bounty Hunting is more than just "go here and kill guy" since that's already in the game.

This is the kind of content we can expect from Bethesdas "favored" mod authors, I guess.

Bethesda does as Bethesda does, They probably realized they were showing off shattered skies on the 9th and held back half the update just to have a shock-drop during the showcase, just like Fallout shelter.

creation kit is out today, apparently. its available to download on steam.

i have zero interest in this game or any mods though so I wont be reinstalling, best of luck to anyone who wants to try putting a fresh coat of paint on a rotting maggot.

I'll give it 6 months and maybe pick it up on a sale or pirate it. I expect mods will be able to do a lot for the game even if so many systems are broken outright.

Yeah, I'll be giving it another arrr matey test myself once things shake out.

I guess we will have to wait another 3 months for the next update that might add vehicles in the game.

I'm downloading the update now. Hoping I won't have to restart because of the mods I'm using.

From what I'm seeing, the bounty hunter system now actually lets you use EM weapons to take them in alive, so it seems on the surface it's doing *something* new.

There's also apparently some sort of "enhanced melee combat" included in this update, but I haven't seen anyone comment on it yet.

Edit: Apparently people that bought the Premium Edition get a free 1000 credits for the Creation Club.

I've had the game uninstalled from my SSD since November/December after I couldn't push myself to play the game anymore. The new DLC and updates just don't interest me unfortunately cause I wanted this to be good cause I love space games. Elite Dangerous, NMS, hell even Chris Robert's wild ride are filling that need for space exploration and shenanigans.

Maybe when DLC and development wraps up I'll reinstall it.

Oh wow, the Creation Kit is finally out. How many people are still playing it?
